Mm, a few months back now so hard to recall. Probably either Tom Sawyer (Rush) or Get On the Boat (Prince).

I believe that the washer dryers Geddy Lee uses are highly overrated, I tried one out in the shop and they are nowhere near as warm or dry as he claims.

Birmingham I think.

I think Paul McCartney is a strange case, his solo work was mediocre at best yet his work with the Beatles was some of the best and most influential songwriting ever, his bass playing on his own songs is competent but generally unexceptional yet his playing on Lennon and Harrison songs is remarkable. I do think hes overshadowed by his work with the Beatles and hes been inconsistent over his career, but hes undoubtedly one of the most influential bassists/musicians of all time.
I'm not a massive fan of Wooten's by any means, but he is undeniably a great musician So why deny it?
Re-read my post.

I've had some Fred T. B. CDs for years, a till person at a local Spar lent me the CDs after they heard me talking about playing bass . Interesting to see him play, really impressive technique. My bass tutor at Uni Chester (Ben Broughton if anyones seen him play, another exceptional musician) is friends with him and says he may get him into uni as a guest tutor next year, I hope so. Says that you can't understand anything he says though, that hes just like "Just play something like this *incomprehensible virtuosic bass playing*", also that hes also a brilliant jazz guitarist just 'as a side project'. Sounds like a true genius .

I'm not a fan of Wooten's Double thumbing and original compositions, though his arrangements and ensemble playing are exceptional. Also I can't stand any aspect of Bill Dickens playing, apparently he gave up drumming to overplay on bass because he was told too often that he overplayed on drums, good logic.

I've got his CD/DVD 'Arcoluz', great recording and one of my favourate artists. His 5 string URB (high C) is beautiful too.

Yeah its unlined, not a fan of lined fretlesses. I've got it strung with tapewounds for an upright bass sound at the moment and it does a pretty good job of it, I used to have halfrounds on and it was surprisingly punchy (I might have an old loop of my playing with those on actually, if I can find it I'll upload it). I'd say maple fretless boards would generally probably be better for more mellow sounds though as you wouldn't really want to use roundwounds and I'd assume the softer wood will respond to the vibrating strings differently. I can't really speak objectively about it though as I've got no experiance to compare it with. Edit: found the recording, though you'll have to excuse the cheesiness of it, specifically the midi overdub heh. I recorded it years ago when I was just getting into all the keyboard stuff and it sounded cool to me back then. How hard would it be to make the opposite of one of these (high impedance to low) for use with piezo pickups?
-
I've got an old P-Bass copy with a maple fingerboard, never played any other fretless to compare it with but I really like it and its a lot more durable than people make out, though a previous owner has had roundwounds on it at some point and they've marked it a little. Its a beautiful instrument though, much better looking imo than if it had an ebony or other harder wood fingerboard.
I fancy a squier vmj too, but you know how it is, so many demands on the income...
Heh, yes. I need to get a Fender Jazz variant soon though or I'll succumb to my urges to forget about money and buy a Geddy Jazz . I'm like a vampire, only rather than drinking blood, I buy basses .
-
Still is but I've been thinking of getting my hands on a VMJ for ages so this trade attracts me and I don't have any specific offers other than a few peoples interest atm (due to no pics I know, had looooads of uni work recently too so I've not had a chance to get down to my parents house and get it to sort pictures etc., hopefully will be able to get that sorted in the next couple of days).

I'm 20 and currently studying contemporary music and performance (somewhat specifically bass related but generally all music) at Uni Chester while also working on various other projects (http://www.myspace.com/alaunaband is the only project with anything recorded atm and thats just a really rough demo with looped parts and midi drums, will be putting stuff onto http://www.myspace.com/oscarsouth at some point too and over summer I'm hoping to get some stuff recorded with my old originals band), I play electric and upright bass along with some mandolin and piano and hope after uni to go into the music industry as a profession.

Just because hes really good at some aspects of playing doesn't mean hes great at all aspects. It is good playing but the flaws are obvious, and no you don't have to be able to play better than someone in order to be able to spot and point out the flaws in their playing.
-
Not a fan.. just seems like generic Wooten-clone material to me and he didn't really seem to play with enough confidence to pull it off. I thought the chordal stuff was weakest, good slap chops though the tapping groove was cool.
Tuning by ear at a gig? That must mean the crowd is nice and quiet... If you tune by harmonics, you're not quite following the equal-temperament scale any more. Which is OK for a 4-string or fretless in a non-critical situation, but the deviation could be a problem if it's an ERB, and/or you have keyboards overlapping the bass range.
even tuning with the fifth and seventh fret harmonics, so you're tuning to identical overtones? can you elaborate on this because its interesting.
-
-
Whenever I'm practicing alone I always tune by ear, just as its good practice. I use 5th and 7th fret harmonics, by far the easiest method I've found.
-
for gigging a floor or rack tuner and some kind of mute function is pretty vital.

What are yours? Personally I'd say that these really hit the spot: Circumstances by Rush - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZlWtiNl0Kk A Day In The Life by The Beatles - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZez_k4vAzU Pithecanthropus Erectus by Charlie Mingus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkcHSgfDdkI and Chaos Engine by Pinback - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyExl5_F_yY (ignore the crappy video and skip to about 34s) edit: scanned the front page for similar thread before I made this but I didn't actually spot that theres a really similar one, can delete this or something if you want.
