1. There are different ways of learning, some are better suited to teaching than others. The 'muso' method is a very natural method to teach (although lacks as far as teaching the elements of music that can't be easily quantified) whereas 'intuitive' learning is much harder to teach (though some manage it to great success).
2.
Enjoying that dude!!
Cheers I've just gotten started with a brand new project (a few weeks in so far) which has been going brilliantly.. a dozen or so songs written and rehearsed, 6 recorded at studio quality (all within 24 hours of forming as a band for the first time! ). Loads of gigs coming up and the material we're writing has that magic you only get with the perfect mix of musicians/abilities/time/place. Folk / Acoustic / World Music [click the picture to go to ReverbNation] You can also keep up to date with us on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Bear-Bea...167398836639236 And I recommend checking out the live takes in this radio interview: http://www.pointfm.co.uk/blogs/graham-bevi...he-weekend.html There are a few bits we only throw in live in there and some great performances all round.
3. Been working hard on a new band lately and we recorded a live acoustic session the other day, the recordings are up on listen again so have a listen if you fancy it: http://www.pointfm.co.uk/blogs/graham-bevi...he-weekend.html There are a few tracks in the interview including two live takes, the one 'Right By Your Side Session Version' includes a reel at the end that we only play live and its the moment of the set that sends the crowd nuts. Hope you enjoy anyway, comments or feedback welcome. Oscar.
4. Logged into facebook today to see a link to a review of an EP. I recorded with one of my bands and this little gem was in the opening paragraph:
"Beta "...in F" is what the illegitimate bastard love child of Mike Patten and Les Claypool would sound like. Experimental, Industrial, Progressive and Refreshing. These guys are serious about what they do, and what they do is make some great music."
9/10 rating too! Needless to say, I'm pretty happy about that The songs on that EP. are some of simpler basslines I play in that band too; you should hear some of the pyrotechnics I throw in on the newer material Anyway, you can read the rest of the review here if you like: http://theunsignedreview.blogspot.com/2011...ta-in-f-ep.html Oscar.

12. Wow, that's amazing
13. An absolute essential if nobodies mentioned it already, is 'If This Bass Could Only Talk' by Stanley Clarke. A masterpiece of bass guitar history.
14.
I'd also recommend Michael Manring's 'Soliloquy' too - awesome stuff.
15. Have a listen, comments appreciated. http://www.reverbnation.com/thebearbeatsband Oscar.
16. Keep it simple <---> Keep it tasteful The key is in the relationship between those two phrases, one is a generalisation and one is context sensitive
17. Live it'd sound amazing, I don't like the sampled piano tone but everything else is class.
18. Is there a second keyboard in there? I can hear a high synth with a legato lead sound
19. We've stuck it up on our website: www.thebetaspace.com (or click my sig) along with a lot of new content (including some cool bass playing stuff listed under 'Projects: O-Zone') Enjoy.
20. I think you're taking his comment out of context, I'm pretty sure he means the cut off for the note you're currently playing should usually come on the snare, which is something that happens (usually) anyway when you play another note or re-articulate the same note. Rolling 8ths and Disco octave licks both have a note being cut off on the snare hits and its something that I've witnessed many players doing subconsciously, just because it feels right.
21. I've been studying sight reading a lot lately and just read this article which I saved the link to a good while ago http://www.musica.uci.edu/mrn/V5I1W98.html#sight-reading. I like to immerse myself in what I'm learning and that was interesting, this thread is just a request to see if anyone's got or knows of any other useful or interesting articles that I could read. Absolutely anything, whether it's practical, theoretical, scientific, speculative, applicable, philosophical or just someones opinions and experiences in the field, I'm interested. Look forward to seeing what people have got, Cheers, Oscar. Edit: will just add the link to Aluns blog post on sight reading which I found in the Theory forum and found both useful AND interesting http://bassbook.blogspot.com/2009/09/secre...-bits-they.html
22. Just reflecting on the second comment thinking about my own playing, I almost always kill the note on a snare hit. The first comment imo is a half truth, there's a difference between the instrument 'bass' and the role 'bass', there's no reason that either has to be exclusive to the other (and likewise, no reason they shouldn't be).
23. Both of mine are in my signature but I'll do a quick rundown on both the main ones: βeta Beta is an Experimental Rock/Groove Metal band based in the North West of England, we use a variety of sonic tools to create unique soundscapes and compositions that can be performed in a rock framework, we're recording an album that should be released by summer 2011. Check out our website for music and various other media. http://www.thebetaspace.com/ Les Pêches Les Peches is a four piece acoustic/live lounge quartet with Cajon and Double Bass as well as two girls one of whom plays guitar sings while the other handles lead vocals. We've recently recorded a full album and will be recording a music video for our track 'Weak' in the next few months. Check out our (new) website for music, a little about us and I'd specifically recommend watching a few of the videos, we've got quite a few and they're amusing (at least I think so). http://www.lespeches.co.uk/
24. I've always enjoyed this solo piece: A lot of great melodies and textures in there.
25. I can deal with all the trash talk about technical bass playing, but really.. that's not just a show off piece, its a great piece of music that happens to be performed by a bassist and a drummer. You could break down and re-arrange the song in a way that Oasis could play it, and it'd still be a great piece of music that a lot of people would have quite different opinions about.
