I had been into Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath and the usual mega bands until the night I saw the Pistols. I suppose my judgement was coloured by what I had seen before that night. The overall impression was one of chaos, which we had never seen before, but we all new this was it..... It's difficult to imagine now what it was like for a bunch 19 year old kids,40 years ago, to witness something that did not exist in their minds before that night.....it really cannot be explained...

Sex Pistols..... Ability.... Zero..... Life changing.....overnight.... The most exiting thing I have ever seen, but still the worst band in terms of musicianship. Nothing was ever the same again after seeing them...

One of the most unrecognised ways of altering your bass tone is the length of your strap. If you have it super long, your hand will naturally fall to the rear, or bridge end of the bass... The higher you wear the bass (or the shorter you have the strap) the more it will naturally push your hand across the bass towards the neck pick up. In its extreme, a player using a pick with a long strap will sound completely and utterly different to a finger player on a short strap using the same bass and settings.. I use a strap to which I have fixed 2 Dunlop strap locks 6 inches apart, and even without changing to a different bass, and just switching between strap positions, the difference in sound is noticeable...

My Bands Website (opinions please)

Spot on...... One thing I always look for on a band web site is those awful photos that have a dart board in the background, or posters advertising 'two meals for the price of one' that have crept in to the shot. A good band trying to create a professional image can ruin their credibility by using images, mates photos, (or even worse... i phone videos,) which portray them as a warm up act for the bingo. Your photos show the band in a positive light.... Nice one centurion... -
I had a pick many years ago, but I lost it....Sooner than spend hard earned cash on a new one, I started to use my fingers... These fingers are still with me, I have never lost one, and I never have to tape spare fingers to mic stands... I have probably saved in excess of £5 over the last twenty years by making this transition....

Brilliant Billy... No pics, but what you have told me gives me the confidence to buy it now.... Thanks all to all of you.... ( and any others after this post) for your help.... Basschat as always...a real gold mine when you need one..

Oh....and thank you Nick..... Al these little bits of info help put a clearer picture together....

Thankyou Damon.... I am in a position where I am closing a deal on a Euro, but I just want to make sure I know what I am looking at. The seller is without question totally honest and trustworthy, but Its always nice to have a bit of knowledge on these things...

Cheers amigo.....

Cheers Camden, but are there any visual clues to which model they are that you are aware of....

What are the visual differences between a Spector Legend, and a Euro LX. It might seem like a crazy question to Spector owners, but I have no knowledge of these basses whatsoever, and looking at stock photos of them, there is no badging or headstock info to tell you what models they are. Thanks in advance....

I bought one a few years ago for £950... Traded it in 2012 for a bass at Bass Direct with a value of £2700. Bass Direct then sold it pretty quickly for about £3500. In my very humble and unqualified opinion, it was heavy..... had chronic neck dive....looked home made, and had a horrible neck profile... I used it maybe a dozen times, (and only because I felt I had to,) but soon gave up on it as it just did nothing for me either sound wise, or as an enjoyable playing experience... Without doubt, one of the worst basses I ever owned, but made a packet on it on the resale...Huzzah... -
You wouldn't want to walk past your local scrap yard carrying that in your hand....If he switched on his 'super magnet picking up things' device, you could lose your arm.

'Er in doors sometimes acts as my glamourous assistant while we 'rehearse in bed'. Why she has to dress up as a French maid to demo her microphone holding technique has always puzzled me a bit though.....

Check out 'Amp vibrating off cab...any cures'. It's a thread on this site with loads of suggestions on it..... I will 'bump' it to the top so you can have a look.... -
I can honestly say that in forty years of playing , buying, selling, meeting hundreds of other bass players, trying countless basses in shops, and viewing thousands on the net, I have never seen a naturally worn bass that comes even close to these road worn fakes.....(even the lightly distressed ones.) Whenever I see battered bass, which is very rarely, I just know its a fake, which seems to totally reverse the logic for buying one in the first place. To get them to the state that some of them are in, they would have to be hundreds of years old, used as targets at axe throwing competions, and dragged to gigs behind a motor bike..... All they have done is take away the credibility of naturally worn examples.. Hope the big car manufacturers don't pick up on this as a money spinning idea.

A friend of mine had a top end Dingwall, and dropped a Fender tuning pedal on it while it was in the case. It put a large dent on the top horn, which looked really naff. A week later he sold the bass and took a real knock on what he sold for it for due to this damage. He said there is 'wear' which increases the value of some guitars, and then there is 'damage' which can ruin the resale....wear comes from use, damage comes from being a careless nob... The Words of a very cheesed off man !!!! I love a genuinely worn looking guitar, but it has to be clean, and not 'shabby chic' ...deliberately and obviously aged... Those scuzzy looking basses that look like they have been pulled out of a wheely bin do nothing for me..

The free beer routine is a great money spinner for the Gaffer..... He buys it in for a quid a pint, or a firkin or grutnik.... whatever they are called, and then gives you a few freebies which he now views as £3.75 a pint.... Legalised robbery.....

Denmark Street hype or tripe....
jonnythenotes replied to jonnythenotes's topic in General Discussion
Just a thought on this thread / Denmark St. discussion..... Are there any folks reading this who work in any of the shops on the street. It would be great to get some of your views or opinions, and maybe a bit of insight into what may be in the future. It seems pretty apparent that people who have contributed to this thread, and Basschat in general have a genuine soft spot for Denmark St, and we really do want to support the shops along it, but when the experience falls short of the expectation it creates a disappointing and almost sad feelng considering how it used to be.. I always seem to spend maybe a £1000 or so on all things musical every year, and Denmark Street used to be where some of it went. Nothing would please me more than a trip 'down the smoke' again, and leave some of this money behind me in a couple of the shops, but will it ever happen again ? I hope so... So if you work in one of the stores, tell us something...give us a bit of hope...
