1. Ras52.. Hahahahah....Those days are long gone, but she lives in hope... If I could pull back all the money she spent on slimming related products over the years, I would be a rich bloke. Perhaps I could get her to stand in the corner behind my bass rig....
2. Aha....Well spotted...All of my cabs are either front ported, or sealed units...Thanks for that observation. Could you still do this, but leave space between cab and 'padding'' ?
3. Something you might want to try folks.... When your drummer has finished unpacking his kit, and left all his drum bags lying around, instead of getting cheesed off coz you can't move without tripping over them... Pick em up and put them in the corner behind your rig. Bung your soft amp and cab cover there as well ( if you have them .) Bass loves booming in corners, and none more so than the one you end up in as a bass player at smaller gigs. If you do this, it effectively kills this corner off, and removes that chronic rumble you get from having bass frequencies trapped in your corner. Also, on my wife's quest for a perfect 18 year olds body, she bought a gym mat, which also come with me to gigs. Folded in half, sit your rig on top of this, and with the squashy drum cases, you have created a ' dead room' effect for you to play in. A word of caution tho...do not fold the gym mat to much as it will cause your rig to wobble a bit...especially if you have a tall stack set up.....Run the excess foam up the back of your cabs to help kill off that corner boom. So before you go lashing out on expensive sound deadening systems, try this...it really works, and it's free....
4. Check out the Gibson EB5....American made....great build quality....fantastic flight case....says 'Gibson' on the headstock.....sets you apart from the crowd..and for about 800 quid.....WHAT...
5. Can anyone tell me what U90 means as part of the Yamaha range ? ...The info on my bass reads YAM U90 BB2024NTPT. Someone informed me it indicates it was part of the prototype build that were sent out as 'try out' basses to dealers and artists to get their opinions before general release... Sound plausible, but is it true.... Cheers....
6. Wow....Thanks Musky.....You sound like a chap who REALLY knows his stuff.
7. Thanks for the offer Paul, but I am going to stick with it for a while and get back into appreciating a simple 4 string bass. I was very fortunate to spot it in a charity shop, so at least the 50 quid went to where it is needed. As for me, I am not going to look a gift horse in the mouth...just be glad I spotted it. If I can't get on with it, I will let you know...and thanks again..
8. Hi Geek.....again. I have managed to get photos of it on, but I had to create a separate thread. In case you have not spotted it, its Squier Precision...or a waste of money...photos.
9. Finally...I've managed to upload photos of Bass discussed in previous thread.
10. Thanks Geek99....I almost feel like an expert now after reading that lot. I have also googled a few decals of the 'Silver' model P bass, and they are identical too mine, but mine does not have the word Silver at the end of the headstock....One way or another I will get a photo of it on to this thread... and thanks again for your help...
11. Daft question...but what is a silver series ?
12. Thanks chaps.. I really appreciate the comments. I have been playing active 5 strings for 15 years, with all the fancy whistles and bells etc that go with them, and completely lost site of the basics in this time. Since I picked this Squier up, I have realised how good it is to have a simple 4 string again. Sometimes it is nice to take away the things you THINK you need, paint yourself into a corner, and see how you manage with what you have left yourself,....and in this case it feels good. Since I posted the initial request for advice, have done a bit of poking around using the info and links you have given me, and for once, it looks like I have got a good deal. Thanks again fellas...It really is nice to get unbiased views, that are not driven by sales advisers in music shops seeking a sale. ....John
13. I just bought a Squier Precision for 50 quid, and I wonder if anyone knows if its any good or not, as there are so many variations, over so many years, that I am completely baffled. It is gloss black with a white plastic scratch plate, and Its in very good condition apart from a bit of buckle rash on the back. It also sounds much better than I thought it would, with a lovely warm, round sort of tone, moving to a thinner, toppier sound as you move the tone control around. At the headstock the following info is printed on one decal..... Squier Precision Bass Made In Japan by Fender. On a second decal below the letters 'uier' of Squier' is printed Serial Number P005534. I already know that 50 quid is probably good for this bass, or would it have been better spent on a couple of sets of strings... Thanks in advance guys....any info will be gratefully received...
14. Now that rail bass is seriously whacky. Looks like an extra from Thunderbirds...
15. Bang on Plunger....I have got an old 96 limited edition Trace Elliot T bass where the headstock is wood...Still looks good even amongst todays hi-tech boutique gear. Also, you just got to love the Yamaha stringing system...functional and tres cool. The links you put on are also slobber inducing...Good luck with the 'if and when' build...... Thanks for your comments...
16. I have just noticed that the metal grill on my Ashdown neo cab is made up of hundreds of pressings of the Ashdown twin wing logo. Also, the thru body stringing on my Yamaha bass is based on the tailpipes of a American Corvette muscle car. Have you ever noticed anything on any of your gear that had no influence on you buying it, but is a good talking point when you do spot it..? There must be loads of stuff out there that doesn't really effect the sound or performance of your gear, but is a cool thing to have on it anyway. Another example of this is he headstock on the Trace Elliot T bass... Completely over engineered, probably has very little effect on the performance, but looks really good. So come on then, make me drool over, or start googling things I had no idea were there, but will impress the pants off me when I find out..
17. Well I picked the two cabs up today from Bass Direct...Very frustrated as I cant try em out for a few days. I have 3 different basses, and it will be interesting to see how they all sound....A Wood and Tronics EJ4, A Yamaha BB20024x and a Mike Lull 5 string........ Fingers crossed.. and thanks again chaps for your input...It really was that advice which made me go for them..
18. Thanks fellas....I am collecting 2 of these cabs from Bass Direct tomorrow ( Cheers Walbassist}....Also thanksMatt P and Blu Ray...I will let you know how I get on with them..
19. Thanks Si....You are first to reply....Lets hope a few more are as positive as yours....
20. Have any of you had any experience of the Ashdown ABM neo 408 speaker enclosures? They look pretty tidy, and they are certainly not what you would call cheap, at around £700 a pop, but sometimes price does not reflect whether something is fit for purpose. I suffered a back injury 3 years ago which forced me into a downsize programme...anything from lighter guitars..... individual speakers and amps instead of combos..... D class amps instead of the old 20kg monsters....all this to reduce weight, and therefore the risk of a knackered back again. Speakers are usually the the heaviest items in our armoury, and that is what I am trying to sort out now. I am a funk man thru and thru, and as such, I am looking for the mid to top side of what a cab can do. Also a quick snap back, ready for the next note, as opposed to the bigger speakers such as 15's which are fantastic at rearranging your intestines. Not too worried about volume either as the P.A will take care of that side of things if out front volume is needed. To me personally, it is all about note definition and that very vague, and over used word 'punch'. I am looking at 2 of these cabs, and they will be driven by an Ampeg PF 500 amp. So, if you can help...( if poss, be specific to the ABM 408 neo,) I will be extremely grateful...( Be great to see some You Tube links of them being demo'd if you know of any...) Thanks Guys....Mucho Grassyarse
21. Thankz H....Will give em a toot....
22. Any ideas where I can get a Yamaha bb2024x (or a bb1024x as I think they are the same) scratch plate and chrome plate from....Cheers guys...
23. I bought a Fender American jazz IV Deluxe a couple of years ago, and all was ok until I tried out a Sandberg California TM5. The Fender now feels a bit like I am playing something that fell off a tractor.... For a very similar cash outlay, my humble opinion is that the Sandberg is a better all rounder, and has more versatility sound wise than the Jazz. Before you shell out, It might be worth having a look at the Sandbergs that Bass Direct in Warwick have got in stock. Also, for a bit more loot, check out the Mike Lull range of basses (again Bass Direct.) I had Brian Beller signature model off him (5 string) and the Mike Lull range of basses are out of this world....but at a price. I still have these basses, and gig them all, but the Sandberg seems to get more outings than the others.
24. Thanks fellas.... It did feel super nice.... If a few more reviews like that come thru... it might inspire me into making a purchase.
25. Tried one of these today and was pretty impressed to say the least...... Are they as good as I think they are ( only had 10 mins with it.) The finish was fantastic having a really high quality feel about it. Are they comparable with anything else in terms of sound, feel and build quality, as there seem to be very few of them about (is that in itself saying something about them) or have I been walking around with my eyes..(and ears) closed. And finally, what would a new or second hand one cost. Cheers folks..
