  1. 7755.... Thanks for that. All these little bits of info and advice are really making me look forward to my next gig on Saturday, where I will try and implicate a lot of what has been said over the last couple of days.... Love it....
  2. Most people who book a band for a wedding want to pay them less than they did for their wedding cake,( which nearly always gets left, ) and the Iceland 'whale on a stick' and recently thawed 'sausage delights'.
  3. Trevor and Mikel.... Again some brilliant and easy to understand analysis and potential remedies here..... Thanks to ALL of you who have offered advice, and hopefully one or two cures... Oh.....and keep em coming.... Thanks again. PS..... I forgot to add on my initial post that when this distortion happens, the 'clip' light doesn't flash on, so my presumption is that without the clip light flashing, it therefore means that the signal hasn't been to much for the amp..(tecamp puma 900.) Cheers.
  4. Thanks Lozz.... To try an give an example of when it occurs would be to say if the whole band is playing together, and collectively producing volume 'X', and there is a part within the song where the bass takes a dominant roll, the rest of the band pull back a little to help accentuate this, thus reducing volume 'X', but the bass, now with reduced support from the other players has to still maintain volume 'X'. This is probably ok if you are going thru a PA, and there is an engineer at hand to lift your volume as and when in a song, but without this luxury, the next best thing is to try and increase the volume by digging in harder, which seems to be when the problem occurs.... and as you pointed out, predominantly on the lower notes/strings.
  5. Wow Mykebass.... That's a great little graphic you just put up there. You really have hit the nail on the head there mucka..... Cheers..
  6. Lichfield.... The Feathers, George IV, The Kings Head, The Pig and Truffle. Nuneaton.... The Crown, The Crew, The Kingswood Tavern, The Jailhouse. PS..Great idea for a thread.
  7. Can you over stress a string by digging in too hard? Can being to aggressive when playing finger style cause the string to send out an over cooked signal to the pick up, which in turn seems to drive the amp/speaker into distorting, and also kills the note, as somehow the sustain seems to fade very quickly... It's not a volume related problem, as it seems to happen at normal gigging volumes, and the gear I use is more than adequate for handling the volumes I put through it. It's a passive MIA jazz bass, and it's not bottom heavy rock or dub that I play. I am sure I read somewhere that you can over stress a string if you hit it to hard, which in turn sends a shock like signal to the amp..,something to do with sine waves and other techy stuff.... Any ideas folks before I start looking for answers elsewhere.
  8. Thanks so much guys for the advice... Will keep you posted on how things end up.... Cheers
  9. I really am sorry for my ignorance guys, butting having read the thread mentioned above on wiring the two pups in series, won't that just sound like both pick ups on full volume.... Be gentle with me....

  11. Errr....sorry guys, but in my book DIY means Destroy It Yourself.... What does wiring in series mean, and what will it do to the sound and controls.... Thanks..
  12. Thanks Rick and Mark... Two great option to check out there....
  13. Bass for me. It the only piece of kit you improve on the more you use it. You can't rehearse or learn anything from an amp or cab..
  14. Thanks Miles...... I will investigate that as an option...
  15. I have a Roadworn Jazz, completely standard in every way, but since I recently bought a Hot Rod jazz, it's made the Roadworn sound a bit thin, and without any real warm bottom end. The reason for this is that the Hot Rod has a vintage Fender P pick up fitted at the neck position, and it is a sound I now prefer, having got used to that extra bit of muscle. There is nothing wrong with the Roadworn...it's an incredible guitar, but because I prefer the Hot Rod sound, the RW is not getting used as it should. So my question is, what is the best neck position J pick up I could put in the RW, (without hacking the body around,) to make it sound more like a P bass pick up. The only thing is that it must look the same as the existing pick up, so it doesn't change the look of the guitar. I have a feeling I might be seen as a bit of a ducking stool candidate for wanting a Jazz to sound more like a P, but it's just a personal thing to me...
  16. Check out the thread on this site titled Asounding bass playing... Listen to the bass player on Lou Reeds 'Kill your sons'....... Phooooaaar....
  17. This is what I put together recently for none lottery win money, but it sounds fantastic. Fender Road Worn bass.... £650. Little Mark 2....£225. Epifani PS 112...£150. This gear was all pre owned, and bought using this very site, and sounds as good as some of the other stuff I own which cost a LOT more. As you can see, the whole lot comes to £1025, which are the individual prices you would pay for a new U.S Fender bass, a nice new high end cab, or a new monster power valve amp... Listed above is a sort of standard small to medium gig rig, with no real frills, but delivers a great tone if not driven hard. Add another cab,and the the Markbass can work at full steam at 4 ohms, and suddenly your rig starts to sound massive. So what complete rig have you put together for reasonable cash, that sounds like a big dollars set up.

  19. Sorry Phil....I have just noticed you have priced them separately already.... Pardon my stupidity....and are they still for sale?
  20. Hi Phil.... What are the prices of the cabs individually... It's the 2x10 I am interested in, but might as well see what you want for the 15 as well. Thanks
  21. I bought an Epifani PS112 two weeks ago of Richard on this site.... Without doubt, it's one of the best bass related investments I have ever made... Great cab... I just wish I could afford this one....GLWTS....
  22. Great bass for a great price... I bought a white one from Bass Direct a few months ago, and love it... I had the 2024X a couple of years ago, sold it and regretted it almost straight away. I saw the 1024x in Bass Direct one evening on their web site, and I bought it the following morning as soon as the shop BD opened. Someone is going to be very happy......
  23. Some good stuff here guys, and thanks for your time... The 'small rig' will be an Epifani PS112, powered by an Epifani PS600 head. I have had the head for a couple of years, but stopped using it when I bought an Aggy Tone Hammer 500....(also have an LM II as a back up.) I saw the PS112 cab come up at a pretty good price, and thought the two Epifani bits of kit would be a good match together..and be pretty portable... So really, I don't actually need it, it's just a touch of GAS, and also, I want to start using a fantastic head again. Thanks again guys, and keep it coming.....
