Pick up booster pedal... Does it work with bass
jonnythenotes replied to jonnythenotes's topic in General Discussion
Well chaps, I now own a Seymour Duncan pick up booster pedal, and it does everything I thought it would, and way more. I went for the SD for no other reason that they have huge experience in pick up manufacture, and being a pick up booster pedal, it seemed a reasonable way to form an opinion. I have only tried it in the spare bedroom,(where I am allocated a bit of space by my good lady,) and it seems to lift everything the pick up sends to it smoothly and completely, with no change of sound, frequency drop off, and unless turned to full whack, adds no background nasties. Not to sure if the the toggle switch will be of any use, as all I want to do is boost the pick ups, (and at bedroom volume, I can't hear a difference anyway,) but all will be revealed at a full blown rehearsal or gig. I still dont understand why it sounds better than just turning the amp up a bit, but it does, which leads me to my final question on the subject...... What IS the difference between turning your amp up 10%, compared to using a the pedal to give you that boost........ Thanks again guys... -
Pick up booster pedal... Does it work with bass

Thanks for all you replies, opinions and advice guys. I am pretty keen on the MXR micro custom shop model, so I might give that a bash....unless some of you know better.... Cheers -

Pick up booster pedal... Does it work with bass

Thanks both.... Will check out the Spark Bassman.... Great alternative. Have either of you any experience with this type of pedal.. -
Thought he was the boss of Playdood magazine.

I was wondering if any of you have got, or tried a Seymore Duncan pick up booster pedal. They seem to be aimed at 6 string guitars, with no mention of suitability for bass. Is there any reason why they wouldn't work? They look a pretty nifty bits of kit, and not too pricey either..

That's my biggest fear Cosmo..... changing them just because I can, and without any justifiable reason. You have already got me thinkin 'have I lost my marbles?' I have asked the question, and will see what folks come back with....but I think I'm in for some stick about my sanity... Cheers Cosmo the wise...

It's probably a much asked question, but have any of you guys switched from standard production p'ups to after market makes and been super chuffed you did it. I have a Fender road worn jazz, which I am totaly blown away with, but because its so good, I want more... Everything about the bass is perfect, including the sound and frequencies it covers, but I keep reading, and being drawn to articles and companies saying we can make it better. Is there a pick up our there that will not change the sound of the bass, but give it a lift across the existing freq's, (but not like an active bass which adds stuff,) just a bit more muscle doing exactly the same as the existing p'ups. I would be really keen on something that gives you the initial power and thump as you hit the string. I'm not too fussed about top end or sustain, but super clean and warm mids are essential......(sort of bass drum'ish in its delivery and impact. It's a mix of Soul, Motown and Funk I play, but no slap... A few seem to surface frequently as being pretty decent, Nordy's, Aguilar, Seymore Duncan's, Lolar, Bart's, and even the Fender range themselves, but the more I read, the more confused I get, as all the manufacturers are experts at blowing their own trumpets. Budget up to about £200 max for new, but no manufacturers logo on the units. The whole idea is for them to look and sound original and authentic to a Roadworn Jazz, Early 60's. Once again, sorry to ask what is bound to have been asked before, but all help and advice will be gratefully recieved. Thanks..

3 or 4 screw machine heads.... (Worst topic title ever?)

Thank D'hot. Much appreciated.... -
Absolooto a Yamaha bb1024x.... I picked one up yesterday from bass direct, and it blew my wig off. You can get these for around 500 snifters.

Collected a new Yamaha BB 1024x today due to desperately missing the 2024x that I sold last year. I am aware of the differences in build quality that the extra £1000 makes to the hand built 2024x models, but one thing I have noticed is that the machine heads are attached by 3 screws each on the 1024 as opposed to the 4 that hold the 2024 machine heads on. I presume this is to save a bit of cash on building the 1024, but are there any other reasons or effects the 3 screw construction may have.... Less strength, less resonance.... Just curiosity really, as the bass itself is every bit as good as I remember the 2024x being, but I have put my bass playing 'anorak' on, and feel the need to drag some of you far more knowledgable chaps in..... Ta very much

Aha...... That could be it...... Thanks.... -
A friend of mine has a pretty standard looking P bass hanging on his wall...( he's a drummer who once had a dabble on the bass,) and it intrigued me a bit. I have recently bought my first ever precision, a MIM model, and its made me take notice of other P basses in an attempt to try and expand my knowledge on the P model. My friends bass is red with a white scratchplate, but the controls are a stacked volume/tone nearest the neck and a four or five position switch located where the tone control is normally found on a P. This seems to allow fine tuning of the tone control, which as I mentioned earlier, is built into the stack knob. It's not active as there is no battery compartment on the back, and unless you get close up, looks identical to any other P bass. It's a MIM model, and that's as much as I know... Is this a standard build model, or is it a more unusual model...?

That's great Mike. Very much appreciated. The suppliers seem to tell you how to use them, but its not in their interest to tell you how to make 'em last... Thanks again Mike, that really is a help....

This probably seems like a crazy question, but I have Stage Clix radio system with on board rechargeable batteries built into the sender unit, and my question is, does the battery run down at the same rate if its left on, but not sending a signal from the bass as it does when it is in use at a rehearsal or gig when it is actually sending info to the reciever unit recieved from the bass. In a nutshell, does the battery use more energy to send a bass note than it does when there is nothing being played. Also, does continual use shorten their life... ( home noodling, rehearsals, gigs etc,) or do they just gradually degenerate regardless of the amount of use, and therefore recharges. .... Sorry for being such a melon, but its been bugging me for a while, so I thought I would ask a few experts.... Thanks..

I had a 'fault free' PF500 until 3 weeks ago, and I also have a TH 500. In my opinion the TH is in a different league to the Ampeg. The chap I traded the Ampeg with is also moving it on after 1 gig, and has replaced it with a TH500... -

Hi Jafish.... I was the original owner of this amp, and can verify that it was bought my me from PMT in Birmingham in 2012. It was used as my back up amp, and also used at rehearsals, so has led a very sheltered existance. It has performed faultlessly. Richard has had it for two weeks..taken as a trade, so in effect it has only been used by me. I have had a couple of items off Richard, and found him to be totally honest and trustworthy, and would not hesitate to buy from him again... -
What to buy for £35? Suggestions please.
