1.
I wouldn't agree that the live scene is dying.. etc.
Absolutely
2. I'll admit that back when I started gigging in the mid 80s there were a lot more places to play. That declined over the next 20 years or so. Right now though despite a lot of people staying in at night, the scene has stabilised. We may have to travel a little further, but the gigs are out there
3. Standing there banging out rock while staring at your shoelaces is not enough. You need to play stuff that people know (for a covers band) but not stuff that every other band is doing. You need to give the crowd something to look at and engage them. Obviously there are regional variations as to how many venues are available, but if you ENTERTAIN the crowd rather than just play to them, it shouldn't be too hard to pick up gigs (IME of course )
4.
I can chip in here as well. I bought one back in February - read some good comments both on here and Talkbass (I'm now in the Rumble Club there! ).Actually, it's also well worth a read, as there's hundreds of posts and good info. It sounds glorious on it's own, and I have gigged it that way. I also bought a Rumble 115 (15" cab) a bit later to add more umph....not so much volume, but sonic depth. TBH, you can easily get away with the cab as is. Stick the 15 under it, and you have instantly more of the same in abundance. Tone heaven! I changed over from Markbass to these, and I for one far prefer them. They just sound so much more, well, bassy. I use the vintage setting all the time, it gives you a lovely valve-y growl, real old-skool. Just to help - here's a photo of mine I took with my USA P Bass - ...and here's a sound-sample, recorded a few weeks ago in the studio with same P-bass, and Rumble amp and cab mic'd up - https://www.youtube....h?v=mA-xHT-cUC4 Let us know what you decide!
Sounds good on my phone. I'll give it a proper listen later. I think I'm pretty much sold on it. I just need to save the rest of the required beer tokens from my gig money now. Hopefully should only be a week or two
5. I'm liking the replies. Thanks folks
6. Sibelius is probably a much more polished product, but MuseScore is very usable once you've worked out how to fly it
7. Have you seen MuseScore? https://musescore.org/ It's quite similar to Sibelius but with one major difference - it's completely free rather than requiring another mortgage to pay for it No it hasn't got pen input afaik, but if you can bear to click with an old fashioned mouse it's very good, and the audio playback isn't too shoddy either Edit: There is also an installer for OSX 10.7 & older
8. To be fair to a lot of landlords the band budget is often set by the breweries. There have been a few times that landlords have been desperate to have us on but can't afford to. We won't go below a certain amount - the guitarist plays for a living.
9.
Is this something mainly affecting covers bands then?
Not ours. We are probably busier this year than we ever have been. Venues come & go. The ones that survive are the ones that ensure they have quality bands (-> decent money) on a regular basis (-> commitment).
10.
Bloody Sex on Fire..............grr ffs!!!
Ha ha! One of the few songs we absolutely refuse to play under any circumstances
11. Toss up between Funky Music and Paranoid
12. The howler I saw that prompted the post was "I look ill" written as "I could kill"
13.
Big budget films and - increasingly - video games are where you'll find a lot of new classical composers earning their crust these days. Video games being a huge market that now rivals Hollywood in terms of revenue. Check out people like Jesper Kyd and Kow Otani. Plenty of "expression, beauty and emotion" in their work
My 13 year old son listens to classic fm on his radio (the rest of the family don't often) and recognises a lot of pieces from the music on Civilisation V (a video game for you fuddy-duddies )
14.
Got one, love it. I use a 12" cab under it at practice and for some of the larger gigs. The 210 combo goes loud and tbh never had a problem hearing it, I just like to move a bit more air and having it stacked I hear it better. I have just gone and ordered another Rumble 210 to match it with. Seems I prefer 10's again to 12's. I have a few rigs and prefer the Rumble over the more expensive stuff I have, just suits what I'm doing more and has a great look imo
Thanks. GAS is burning
15. My trusty Peavey combo is getting a bit long in the tooth now, enough for me to consider putting it out to pasture. Having initially thought about going the TH500/Barefaced route, I'm now looking at the new V3 Fender Rumble 500 combo. It looks a cracking bit of kit for the money, half the weight of my current beast and just as powerful. I've read some decent reviews, but wondered if any BCers have got one yet and what your impressions are. Is it full sounded & pokey enough? Any reliability issues? Are you confident with it?
16. Are there any lyric sites out there that actually have the correct lyrics to songs on them? I don't think I've ever found lyrics that have been absolutely right for any song, and quite often it's like someone's jotted down what they vaguely remember after some bloke told them in the pub in the middle of a good drinking session. They may have the right words in the wrong order if you're lucky. They are always handy as a "starter for ten" for covers you are learning, but you invariably have to go through and correct them. BTW, the question is rhetorical - I'm not after actual site links, just griping . I'd never blindly trust any site. They are not actually lyric sites, as they don't have the actual lyrics on them!
17.
Those people who swear they'll never buy a Ric because of Mr Hall's alledged tendency to threaten litigation at the drop of a hat, shouldn't forget about the second hand market. You CAN buy a second hand Ric, and not a penny of the proceeds will go anywhere near Mr Hall's coffers. Saying that though, the current price of second hand Ric's is getting so that you can generally buy a new one for around the same price as you'd pay for an old one... go figure!
That's just what I did (except it was a pretty good price second hand too!)
18.
What happened??...it was before my time
It's all on a thread somewhere. Somebody linked it on one of the many recent Ric threads, but it would take ages to find on my mobile gizmo
19. For sure
20. Leicester isn't that far from Warwick but probably too far for you
21. I love mine and don't care what anybody else thinks about that. I am also of the opinion that the incumbent CEO is not a very nice person. (Edit) and that is the reason behind the "is it fake or not" TRC change (in small text it says "Genuine 4003" - so it must be!) I was lucky enough to snap up mine here on BC just before the Hall-abaloo policy change
22.
On the fogger thing BTW, I'm a big fan but always check where the venue's smoke detectors are before you set up ...
I've never had an issue, no complaints, no alarms. Maybe it depends on the type of detector
23. I should have red less 'ter stay sane
24. A fog machine makes a lighting system go a long way too. My KAM one is good. I had nothing but trouble with American DJ ones
25. I have bits I bought separately. Of the lights I have I can recommend the Chauvet Mini Kinta. It's a really good light for the money if you wanted to supplement a set, and adds a bit of movement to the performance if you're a bit constrained on space for jigging about
