It's got such a great tonal range that covers most sounds that my Jazz or Thunderbird can produce, plus a lot more that they can't do. I like to change the tone around quite a bit, but whenever I ask any of the audience (including other musos) if they noticed a difference, they very rarely do. They all agree it's a great sound, but to be honest it's not the primary aural focus in the trio - which is the guitarist (who is a genuinely great bloke & musician so will not get the 'guitard' moniker) - so they just don't notice the bass! Unless it's a song where the bass is the main focus or a major definitive 'hook' sound, it really only makes a difference to you (and possibly any other bass players in the audience). That of course will have a big difference on your own performance overall - if your bass is sounding great to you, you'll be more likely to bop around and have a good time, which helps to elevate the whole performance. That's why I'm playing a bass that cost me £150 and the expensive ones stay at home

I only own one active bass - the one that convinced me to never buy another. I don't feel I've ever lacked tone because of my passive preference, but certainly they have been a lot more reliable. I never want another case of 'flat battery fart'!

Not to do with mixing really, but for many years I've used Jethro Tull's Broadsword and the Beast album for auditioning hifi. The title track Broadsword is great for assessing the tightness of the low end and the 'aireyness' of the highs

Having said that, I agree with you that above a certain frequency the human ear would have difficulties telling the difference - in audiophile terms known as 'air', the upper frequency range above the limit of hearing. I still like vinyl, CDs AND mp3s - they all have their place

They know I play in a band as I have to keep swapping my on-call shifts around gigs. I'm also one of the few blokes amongst the many hundreds at our head office that has hair longer than 2mm - bit of a giveaway I don't talk about it much though, except for the occassional "You'll never guess what happened the other night..."

Friday night we had 3 different people ask "Can I have a go on your drums?". None of them could stand up straight. The funniest bit though was when the guitarist started playing Smoke on the Water - Dum dum dum, dum dum de-dum, dum dum... [b]<silence>[/b] He looked down to see a girl lying flat on her back sprawled across his pedal board. Luckily she had fallen on his tuner pedal and muted the signal. She must've had some nice bruises the next day.

Firstly I'll say I'm not a huge fan of the classifieds. I think the change (albeit in it's present un-finished form) has lost a lot of the community feel. Even the 'pointless' banter in the thread let the seller know that people were at least looking at the advert. Anyway, needless to say I'm encouraged by this thread. Anyway, my real reason for posting is regarding the raising of funds - and the blatant copying of an idea from another website. On [url="http://b3ta.com"]b3ta.com[/url] (and I wouldn't try to access it from your work PC or if you're easily offended!) membership is free. However the users can buy special icons that appear next to their names - that show that they have donated to the site. The icons are changed regularly, encouraging users to be displaying the latest one following another donation. As there are no actual items changing hands (such as the BC lanyards), just kudos, so the entire donation goes to the upkeep of the site. Just an idea like...

This probably won't help much, but my old Aria SB-1000 is currently being restored/refinished. This is mainly due to it being abused for a decade or so by me and my drummer. It was absolutely covered in dents from being wacked with drum sticks, bashed on cymbals and generally thrown around. A further decade spent in a dampish loft were not kind either. In mitigation though it has sentimental value, is a 'keeper' because of that, and was barely playable as it was. Having been stripped back to bare wood it will be finished with an 'ultra-blond' clear coat rather than the original honey, and will have gold hardware to 'match' the brass bridge. You never know, I might actually gig it again. I will eventually post photos in the build diary section (when I get my hands on them/it!).
