1. I play in a guitar/bass/drums trio, so have a lot more freedom than most to choose my tone. As long as I fill out the bottom, I'll play around a bit with the tone depending on the song or how I'm feeling at the time (or whatever tone I had in the last song if the guitarist's just seque'd!). As I play in a covers band doing mainly rock I'll have some Ampeg emulation on my effects box, but might clean it up & round it out for more funky stuff. There again my strings need changing, so they've lost their twang a bit anyway

3.
Bugger! It'd have to be a damn big scroll under the BC coat of arms then.
Do it for the music = enim faciunt, quaerentes musicam (According to Google translate ) Or better still for the BC coat of arms: For the music = ad canendum
4. I'm trying to work out what model of Hipshot I would need for my new(ish) Gibson Thunderbird. As far as I can tell I think I need the GB7 in black. http://store.hipshotproducts.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=72 Has anybody fitted an Xtender to their Thunderbird, and if so which model? The stock tuners are Grover, but the Hipshot website says the GB7 is a replacement for Gotoh tuners. Is there much of a difference? Thanks in advance...
5.
These all seem like good points to me. Anyone got any other suggestions?
If/when the record company comes a-knocking, before you sign any contracts with the label, make sure you take time to make a proper written agreement between the band members as to who has what rights & credits - including use of band name. (Having just read Martin Turner's autobiography ) Edit: And echoing lots of other sentiments - your old band mates behaved in a completely shi**y way, you're better off out.
6. While there is a drum kit on stage, your bass is safe as long as it's tucked out of the way (behind your rig). The drunkards always fancy themselves as a drummer If you are doing backing vox, set your mic stand up with one of the legs pointing straight at you so that you can stand on it whenever a drunkard looms close - your teeth will thank you It will still hurt, but shouldn't take any of them out
7. I've been "Norris" since 1985 - and look at the success it's brought me! In a previous band we took the names of local villages. I can't remember what name I was given, but the guitarist was called Burton Lazars
8. I'm at work at the moment, but will try to post some pics later. The pedal is un-boxed, but in good working condition. I'll need to do some googling & measuring to check your hipshot is the correct one for my bass.
9. If the chrome one will fit my Squier P Bass Special, I'd swap it for a Boss OC-3 octave pedal
10. Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer (must've been mentioned already!) Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way
11. It's the legendary tacet string
12. If you pitch shift everything up an octave it will make it much easier to hear the bassline.
13.
The angled string; that is just hooked onto the stand isn't it? Not supposed to be like that?
It does look like it's caught on the stand. Obviously not a lot of string tension then
14. Does this Gibson count as a bass? Edit: Found here
15. You'll need to practise your bass parts until you can play them without thinking too much. You need to engage most of your brain for the singing - this is the bit the audience will notice. Keep at it though, as it feels great when you can start to drag the timing of the singing around a bit while keeping a rock-steady bassline going. (Pat-rub, pat-rub )
16. True to an extent, but I'm still waiting to see a sub-£1000 RIC in playable condition anywhere. There are some terrific basses out there for very little money these days
17. Nice sounding bass. Wish I had some money, but you'll have to settle for a free bump
18. Oh my goodness - can somebody arrange the funeral for this road-worn relic? Edited to add this classic quote: The jack socket sits in a copper coated plate at the tail end of the scratchplate; it catches the light and could be used as a dazzle the crowd thing next time you play at the Wembley Arena!
19. We finished playing at a pub last weekend and a drunken punter asked why I looked so fed up all the time. I was perfectly happy. So it seems my bass face is ... fecking miserable
20.
Ernie Ball, been using them on everything for a few years now. Mostly Slinkies, but i need a set of flats too. Liam
Ditto. I've been using nothing but regular slinkys for the last 25 years or so. They last for ages & hold their tone - unlike most other strings I've tried. Plus most shops that actually stock bass strings will usually have Ernies.
21. If you were making a youtube video, wouldn't you put the washing away instead of having it strewn all over the sofa?
22. http://comfortstrapp.com/products.htm That's all I need to say
23. Assuming it sounds like mine - it's mainly 'P' with a bit of 'J'. Sounds terrific even with stock pups, and still full of tone even with the tone knob wound fully down. Even the pewter finish doesn't show sweat & finger marks - always looks pristine. Don't buy this bargain of a bass, because you won't want to play any of your others
24. As I walk to work, I usually put it on my iPod & spend a week listening to it first. Then try and work it out by ear. Any tricky bits, or difficult-to-hear bits I run through an editor program - pitch-shifting it up an octave can make the bass line a lot more prominent.
