1. To nip up your tuners get the correct size socket out of your set (you're a mechanic -> must have a socket set), pop the string off for a second, then just tighten the nut by hand - don't use a wrench. That should avoid mashing the nut (as might happen if you use pliers) or over-tightening.
2. I'm more inclined to think it's a dirty jack socket or pot. Does it crackle when you turn any knobs or wobble your guitar leads in the sockets? Mains supply is unlikely to be the cause if it goes quiet - more likely something in the signal path
3.
Yeah, cheers for bringing the EUB last time Norris. I ended up buying one because of you. ...I think Mrs S would like a word with you
At least they are not too expensive
4. Every bass I buy gets fitted with Schallers immediately
5.
I think it was one of those unexpected cleavage moments that catch you by surprise as a teenager.
Mmm... the cheesecloth gypsy style blouses she used to wear. No, no idea what you're on about
6. I've just fitted one to my Squier P-bass Special. It's the first time I've used one. It was simple to fit and set up but the D tuning screw seems to have a bit of play in it. Is that how they are? Would it affect tuning stability? Would a dab of thread lock help? Is that advisable or am I worrying about nothing?
7. The thing to do imho is to get whoever took the booking to call the landlord and find out what was going on. It may well be that he gets a budget from the brewery for entertainment, which would make the pot passing very dodgy if he didn't pass the money on to the band. Call him and find out why the pot was passed - it might have been a legitimate subsidy of his budget, but he should be open about it. We have had situations before where we've been on basic fee plus pot takings - that's fine. We've also had one passed around to encourage us to do more encores - that's ok too as we got the "bonus". What is not fine is the punters thinking they are paying for the band and the money ending up in the landlord's pocket. Nobody likes to feel they have been ripped off
8. No offence intended towards ChrisJaxon btw, just the effects of half a bottle of rather pleasant merlot last night. That was quite a necro-post though
9. ... or even 8 years after the solo finished
10. My EUB is a re-badged Stagg with the brand name Rockitt. It's a very affordable way to get a basic feel for DB if not that authentic sound. However it suits my purposes as a relatively cheap and compact "experiment" and sounds a reasonable approximation
11. As a youth I was in my bedroom with my girlfriend. My mum shouted up the stairs "Dinner's ready". I shouted back "Coming".
12.
I'd love to see it, Norris I don't remember it from last year, but I am just about to start on an own-design cello, loosely based on this yew/mahogany violin I did a couple of years ago - looks nice, plays like s**t - so would be very interested in terms of the weight, balance, etc... I know an upright bass is somewhat different to a cello, but the CofG issues, etc, are likely to be similar. If you're stuck for space, don't worry but if not I'd be really interested. Andy
I'll definitely bring it then It was quite amusing last year to see people hovering round but not daring to have a go - although there were a few brave souls that tried it and had their GAS ignited Edit: And bring your violin - I'm interested in seeing any of your wonderful creations
13. I just thought - would anybody like me to bring my Stagg EUB again? It's a bit of a pain to cart around so I'll happily leave it at home, but if there's enough interest I don't mind bringing it
14.
Very important to me too. We do a lot of weddings and corporate gigs. We dress smart on stage, so having a cab with a rusty grill and ripped/chipped tolex would look out of place. As much as I actually like them, roadworn basses are a no go too. I much prefer classic styling too, rather than something covered in flashing LEDs.
Ha ha. That reminded me of a corporate gig we did many years ago. The drummer owned the PA and decided the cabs were looking scruffy - so gave them a coat of matt black from rattle cans in the car park about an hour before we played. Yes, they stank to high heaven!
15.
Has Feng Shui replaced Rock'n'Roll..?
Yes, but it's no good for metal
16. Yes. A 4-wire humbucker will give you the option to connect it any way you like. There probably won't be huge amount of difference between the top and bottom coil in single mode as they are close together i.e. in the same package. Most of the neck/bridge tonal differences comes from the physical distance between them (for similar specification pickups such as on a Jazz).
17. Call me shallow if you like but I can't stand the yellow highlights on Markbass gear (makes it look cheap imho) and I'm not a fan of the aluminium cones in Hartke cabs
18. Fender Rumble v3. Not a black box. Looks and sounds great imho There again I've had a few black boxes too in the past.
19. As we've had a couple drop out I'll bring my Rumble combo as originally planned - and some headphones
20. Now get some headphones
21. I'd be tempted to replace it at the earliest opportunity. It probably won't last very long
22. Stick some castors on your keyboard stand
23. Maybe it's your ears
24. I've used 45-105 for years. A good balance between "heft" and compliance imho. I used EBs for ages but have recently switched to Prosteels - very similar tbh Edit: and keep the action mid-low so I can give them some welly
25. Well done for popping your cherry Keep at it!
