The drummer owned the PA and decided the cabs were looking scruffy - so gave them a coat of matt black from rattle cans in the car park about an hour before we played. Yes. A 4-wire humbucker will give you the option to connect it any way you like. There probably won't be huge amount of difference between the top and bottom coil in single mode as they are close together i.e. in the same package. Most of the neck/bridge tonal differences comes from the physical distance between them (for similar specification pickups such as on a Jazz).

Call me shallow if you like but I can't stand the yellow highlights on Markbass gear (makes it look cheap imho) and I'm not a fan of the aluminium cones in Hartke cabs

I've used 45-105 for years. A good balance between "heft" and compliance imho. I used EBs for ages but have recently switched to Prosteels - very similar tbh Edit: and keep the action mid-low so I can give them some welly

A multimeter can measure various things in electrical circuits, one of which being continuity i.e. can electricity flow between the two points where you place the probes

Skinny for me. My currently favoured Squier P-bass Special has a neck like a matchstick. My Ric is a lot wider but not too deep.

£20 a plate for the odd one-off sounds like a bargain to me

It sounds to me like the truss rod has freed itself from the anchor point. That will most likely involve removal of the fretboard to fix unfortunately. Find a local experienced luthier to take a look. As it's a bolt on neck, a replacement may work out cheaper - so I'd also explore that option

As a bit of a coda on this, the lacquer has cracked/crazed in a couple of places. Andy isn't happy with it so he wants it back to refinish again. He's a top bloke is Andy! Btw, whichever BCer has the Ibanez Musician with Andy at the moment - that's a gorgeous bass! I'm wondering what all the knobs do though

I think that means to check the continuity of the connection between the bridge, the cavity shielding and the outer sleeve of the jack socket. There should be a wire that makes contact under the bridge - if the humming stops when you touch the bridge that's a sign of a dodgy connection

Another alternative when doing the final finishing is to use a cabinet scraper. They are quite cheap and can give a really good finish. It's basically a piece of spring steel with a burnished "hook" on the edges, and will let you get a lovely smooth finish

I'd be tempted to use a bandsaw rather than a jigsaw if you have access to one. Otherwise, be prepared for a lot of rasp/file work. I've never found a jigsaw that will cut vertically yet, so leave plenty of material to finish by hand if you go that route
