Peavey BW
were you overally happy with it?
Yes. It was pretty powerful for its size and led a couple of friends of mine to seek one out for themselves. However, compared to the Rumble it is a little muddy and lacking in definition. It was a great amp and served me well (Peaveys are usually pretty bomb proof) but the Fender is half the weight, more refined - but not overly so... and plain has more balls on tap! Peaveys are (usually) good amps
2. I think you need an "extreme relic" award or something Not to my personal taste but very brave all the same. I personally prefer natural wear & tear
3.
Just ordered a 100w Rumble for small church hall type gigs. Hopefully it's enough.
There was one in the for sale section the other day...

Peavey BW

Before I got my current Fender Rumble 500 combo I used to use a Peavey Databass. It's very similar to the photo you posted and uses the same 1x15 BW speaker. I reconed it twice over its working life. It's a fairly simple matter of unbolting the big magnet from the old speaker and bolting it onto the new one. The cones have undergone a few revisions. The last one I fitted was definitely a later revision than the two older cones
5.
Anybody had chance to compare Rumble to Ashdown MAG, Hartke LH or Ampeg PF tone/soundwise?
I played a place a few times last year that had a Hartke LH1000 as a house rig with 1x15 and 4x12 cabs. It looked impressive but from the third gig onwards I used my Rumble in preference
6. I would have said mine has heft Great bottom end on it though - it doesn't need any boost on the bass tone control at all ime
7. Our tribute is not to ruin any of his songs. We just don't have the electromagical gizmos to do them justice. That's probably why most bands are doing Purple Rain - because it's the only song that might be vaguely recognisable when reproduced down the Dog & Duck by the Weekend Warriors
8. I can recommend the Melvyn Hiscock book - it's available from his website - ignore the silly prices on Amazon! It's a good book to give you a decent understanding and then there are lots of guitar building websites out there with build diaries e.g. ProjectGuitar.com (where I'm documenting my first guitar build - not a bass though!) Edit to say that funnily enough I was thumbing through Melvyn's book earlier this evening while waiting for my lad at his music lesson
9.
I think you're right about the back being Oak. The end grain that can now be seen on the edge of the section I've got off, looks just like Oak end grain.... Thanks for the tip-off
My eyes are not that bad yet then I'm pretty hopeless at the "guess the wood" game though
10. That looks fantastic
11. The top and back laminates almost look like oak. Is the centre neck laminate walnut? Not easy to tell on my mobile phone with my knackered old eyes
12. Try flipping the phase on the J pup then? (As well as putting the P back how you like it)
13. If anybody can fix it Andy can. (No pressure! ) I'm looking forward to this one
14. To nip up your tuners get the correct size socket out of your set (you're a mechanic -> must have a socket set), pop the string off for a second, then just tighten the nut by hand - don't use a wrench. That should avoid mashing the nut (as might happen if you use pliers) or over-tightening.
15. I'm more inclined to think it's a dirty jack socket or pot. Does it crackle when you turn any knobs or wobble your guitar leads in the sockets? Mains supply is unlikely to be the cause if it goes quiet - more likely something in the signal path
16.
Yeah, cheers for bringing the EUB last time Norris. I ended up buying one because of you. ...I think Mrs S would like a word with you
At least they are not too expensive
17. Every bass I buy gets fitted with Schallers immediately
18.
I think it was one of those unexpected cleavage moments that catch you by surprise as a teenager.
Mmm... the cheesecloth gypsy style blouses she used to wear. No, no idea what you're on about
19. I've just fitted one to my Squier P-bass Special. It's the first time I've used one. It was simple to fit and set up but the D tuning screw seems to have a bit of play in it. Is that how they are? Would it affect tuning stability? Would a dab of thread lock help? Is that advisable or am I worrying about nothing?
20. The thing to do imho is to get whoever took the booking to call the landlord and find out what was going on. It may well be that he gets a budget from the brewery for entertainment, which would make the pot passing very dodgy if he didn't pass the money on to the band. Call him and find out why the pot was passed - it might have been a legitimate subsidy of his budget, but he should be open about it. We have had situations before where we've been on basic fee plus pot takings - that's fine. We've also had one passed around to encourage us to do more encores - that's ok too as we got the "bonus". What is not fine is the punters thinking they are paying for the band and the money ending up in the landlord's pocket. Nobody likes to feel they have been ripped off
21. No offence intended towards ChrisJaxon btw, just the effects of half a bottle of rather pleasant merlot last night. That was quite a necro-post though
22. ... or even 8 years after the solo finished
23. My EUB is a re-badged Stagg with the brand name Rockitt. It's a very affordable way to get a basic feel for DB if not that authentic sound. However it suits my purposes as a relatively cheap and compact "experiment" and sounds a reasonable approximation
24. As a youth I was in my bedroom with my girlfriend. My mum shouted up the stairs "Dinner's ready". I shouted back "Coming".
