1. Cool. Is that vinyl? ("Sticky backed plastic" for older Blue Peter viewers )
2. A good one to start with is "Build Your Own Electric Guitar" by Melvyn Hiscock. Although it's mainly about guitars rather than basses, the principles are the same (and one of his example builds is an 8 string bass). Ignore the ridiculous prices on Amazon and get it direct from Melvyn's web site. His phone number is on the site too if you want to chat to him - he's a really nice bloke
3. And early Rickenbackers work in a completely different way - loosten bolts, bend neck as required and then tighten the bolts again. Good luck if you ever need to do that!
4. Or a Dremmel to polish them up a bit. I think I'd avoid WD40 as it might get into the windings. Maybe a light dab of wax based furniture polish might help stop it coming back. I'd try to avoid anything containing solvents
5.
Please God ... Do wop-be-do-be-do why, Why WHY??? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34323112
FTFY
6. Cracking job Andy Could the same veneering technique be used when there is a bit more curvature up to the nut e.g. on a telecaster guitar? Or would you not spray water on the back where you want it curved? There again it would curve with the grain rather than across it?
7.
I've not used this model, but I have used Bartolini before and I'd say their reputation for top-notch pickups is well justified. The quad-coil design appeals, as you can switch for a variety of types: http://www.bartolini.net/product/xxp25c-b/
Thanks. I was thinking of checking out Bartolini after I posted. Those look very compact for a quad coil
8. I'm just getting into guitar building and am thinking about my second build. This will be a 5 string bass with 2 humbucker pickups. I would like to be able to centre tap, so I'm preferably looking at 4-wire pickups. I'd like to be able to get them positioned somewhere around the Precision spot and Stingray bridge (and I know only a P/Stingray will sound like a...) I'm also looking for a rectangular case i.e. not split P style What pickups can you recommend I look at? TIA Edit: I generally prefer passive but would not rule out active
9. Anything by any prog band ever Especially Genesis A well known Bognor restaurant owner disappeared early this morning. Last seen in a mouse brown overcoat, suitably camouflaged they saw him catch the train. (Harold the Barrel)
10. Elton John. I can't say I'm the greatest fan but he has done some excellent songs... and some not so good
11. As fretmeister says, an acoustic body is likely to break. It would require additional bracing to support the electric neck and that would mean taking it to bits - which probably wouldn't end in a good way
12.
I sold my US Jazz and to be honest I don't really miss it. I have a Mexican fretless Jazz which is fantastic (not that I play it often). I occasionally gig my Squier P-bass Special (PJ), but none of my other basses resembles a Fender. My main gigging bass is my 4003. Like others have said, Fender is the standard. They have a certain kudos. I've personally just kinda drifted away from them and like other basses of a more "raw" persuasion
Ok, I take that back. My Squier sounded immense this afternoon. SD QPs through my Rumble 500 combo were sweet. They went from thick and warm to biting clank with a nudge on the tone control. Great

14. Apart from the one glitch which Fender fixed, mine has been very good. In fact I barely give it a second thought at gigs now. It's a shame that there are some issues reported. There again i suppose it is made to a (low) budget so a few issues are inevitable.
15.
I used my V3 Rumble Combo for the first time in a band practice last night. Good grief how loud are these things! I was quite surprised. It has a great tone and performed great.
Nice one. I don't even get my master volume to half way on gigs
16. I bet that would be great for the Beach Boys classic "Good Hibernations"
17.
Blimey, it's not cheap is it?
Dunno. I'm still using the lacing that I "liberated" from my uni sandwich placement company a few decades ago
18. I have a MIM Jazz fretless which is rather nice. It's lined too
19.
Out of curiosity, has anyone else made up this sort of thing, and if so, have you used cable-ties or some other means of consolidating it? I have to take care with cable ties round the lead, they're a little hard on my delicate little hands if I'm not careful.
You could try cabinet lacing (not sure what the official name is). It's a thin nylon string covered in a black outer sheath that is used by panel wirers to bundle cables together. Although these days they tend to use cable ties for speed Edit: Search for "cable lacing"
20. Quite often tickets go on sale on their website muse.mu - try registering on there. I managed to get tickets for the Second Law pre-tour on there.
21. As far as I can tell a lot of OGWT was recorded live, but there are a few obvious exceptions. There was one on the other day - Argent doing God Gave Rock and Roll, and the guitarist couldn't remember the adhoc fills he'd done on the recording

I think what Alex was saying is that a truly flat response system would be prohibitively expensive and impractical to cart around. Affordable solutions must inevitably include some colouration. IEMs sound a good way to go if it's just for your personal monitoring

You could have a listen to the Fender Rumble 500. The amp is pretty clean if you don't engage any tone shaping circuits and they do a 2x10 cab, although you'd need a pair to get the full 500W (approx 350W into 8 ohms)
