1. Another option would be to trace it using a CAD computer program then find a print shop with a plotter. There are quite a few free CAD packages available on t'Internet. Inkscape is quite a good vector drawing program that would probably do the job - and is not too complicated to fly
2. Smile, say thanks for the advice and take the money at the end of the night If he's so good it makes you wonder why he's running a sh*tty little pub rather than gigging...
3. Not a problem imho. At a posh function you might want to wait, but we have packed up a few times while the DJ does the last hour or two. It would be a bad move to try to muscle your way through the dancers with the kit (case it up and wait to the end for lift out), ok if there's a side door.
4. With great care you could probably start it off by routing with a chamfer bit with a bottom bearing to follow the contour of the bass. However it's a pretty deep chamfer so you'll need to do a lot by hand using a round surform/rasp/file and then finish with a lot of hand sanding
5. A dep should always be paid, even if just covering expenses. Backing out gracefully: "Sorry lads but I just can't get the time off work that day" and then invent some crucial work-based event that requires your personal presence
6.
How am I ever going to get through an audition if my playing is littered with squeeeeeeeekrattlehoooooooo, though?
Audition. At least you'll get to play at volume with a band, and you never know...
7. I went to see Martin Turner "playing the music of Wishbone Ash" last night. Now there's a great bassist/singist
8. My drummer uses an SM58 for vocals. I've never noticed any issues with his acoustic kit
9. Btw, my day job is C# and SQL Server. Give me a shout if you want any advice
10. You might find this challenging due to the sheer number of variants even within a given bass range e.g. Precision. The neck pocket would be the hardest to define - depth, length, width, corner radius, end of neck radius, etc. Then you have the pick guard issue, fit of pickups, third party parts... Having said that, it would be a very handy resource. You would need to allow users to enter data and edit it though, as it would be nigh on impossible to maintain it all yourself (site membership). I'd probably start off with tables for brand, model, body, neck, pickup; and then relate them. Some may be a many-to-many join, so do another table for the relationship; on other tables a simple foreign key would suffice.
11. EBs have been like that for years. I get round the problem by always having a full set of NEW strings as spares
12. +1 on Melvin's book. Ignore the ridiculous prices on Amazon - he now sells direct from his own website (sorry, you'll have to search for that!). I phoned the number on his site and spoke to the man himself, who was kind enough to sign it too. He's a very nice bloke and the book is a mine of information. Also have a look at the build threads on ProjectGuitar.com Edit: in fact I'll have to read my copy again as my guitar building course starts in a couple of weeks. Excited! Edit 2: Here you go ... http://www.melvynhiscock.com/MYOEG.html
13. Strange that they are asking for a bass demo, but if it's a demonstration of dexterity they are after I'd bear that in mind when choosing your piece
14. Gorgeous!
15. I "sing" lead on a couple of songs and do a few BVs. I'd never make a career out of my voice though - the guitarist has a great voice and the drummer is pretty good too. The more you do though, the better your voice gets and the easier it becomes.
16. Don't put up with it. Although you probably write it off as "banter" at the moment, it is bullying and will eventually eat you up. I was in a similar situation when I played in a trio for 10 years. Over time the drummer's ego grew out of all proportion and I was the butt of increasingly nasty "jokes", "pranks" and comments. I haven't spoken to him for the last 20 years. I still play with the guitarist, who is a great bloke. The long and short of it is that it will get to you in the end, and you are best to nip it in the bud as soon as possible. If that means walking away from the band, so be it!
17. I could never quite get the same tone as I got from an old 15" speaker with a torn cone that I mended with tissue paper and wood glue and then mounted in a cab that my dad made for me. Probably for the best really
18. My guitarist is currently playing his LP deluxe (with the smaller humbuckers) through his Mesa. It sounds gorgeous. There again in our trio he can play what the heck he likes
19. Living On A Prayer Black Knight (or any other Deep Purple)
20.
Pulling a crowd has nothing to do with it or footballers would be musicians. I think the Performance Artist label is the closest. That makes sense to me.
I was thinking more of pulling in the punters to music festivals - excuse my mobile phone based brevity
21. Any backing track or MIDI sequence within a "live" performance could be classed in the same category as DJing. However live DJs will be a lot more fluid in their performance - almost like stringing a few pre-rehearsed licks together to make a guitar solo. The line gets increasingly blurred to the extent that I am prepared to class DJs as performance artists, and therefore musicians. And whatever anybody thinks, they are still pulling a good crowd
22. No link I'm afraid. It didn't stop me breathing, but did stop me playing tonsil hockey with a young lady. She wasn't too pleased as I recall. I went and bought the album the next day, never saw her again Crossing the Corpus Calloseum from the album Marc Johnson's Bass Desires.
23. Have you got a Dremmel? If so try cutting a slot in the top of the remaining screw so you can get a flat blade screwdriver on it. Failing that you could try drilling a hole in it and use a very small stud extractor
24. That looks fantastic! Cracking job! Got any pictures of the construction in progress?
25. Could you control the Pi gadget with a MIDI pedal? Admittedly you wouldn't have a display on it but you could probably program the lights to flash a bit of morse code to indicate settings
