We try for at least 300 in pubs, won't go below 250. You've got to make it worth your while, especially for a covers band. Maybe do the first one at a venue for slightly less with the agreement that next time it's for more. Edit: We're a trio btw

You could rest the head of your bass on your music stand
I'm looking into buying a couple of cabs & would like to know - Can the 210 cabs do the modern thing well or are they more suited to vintage, warm stuff ? I really favour cabs with good tweeters & good articulation.
The combo is pretty clean and punchy so I assume the cabs will reproduce pretty much any sounds you throw at them. The amp has a Vintage switch which does what it says - and that sounds good too

To be fair to GAK, the amp is going back to Fender for them to look at. If Fender then send it back to GAK you would expect it to work correctly. I don't think that GAK would send out anything with a known fault, as handling a return would probably kill their profit margin
Maybe I'm just too cynical - but it's odd it's the same problem on the same amp model from the same retailer......
Yours had the same issue - sounds like a speaker has gone but coming from the amp?

Mine was working fine at first. I gigged it for around 20 hours before it developed a fault. The gigs on Friday and Saturday were ok, it started making horrible noises on the Sunday

Thank goodness for my trusty old Peavey Databass combo. I'd have been stuffed otherwise. I only got the Fender because of the age of the Peavey. It's gonna stop working one day

Hmm... if I get an extension cab it might be worth investing in a little class D head as a spare. I shouldn't have to though. They sound great but I'm starting to have doubts about the reliability.
Nope, imo... but good construction is key.
As a novice I'll try to build it as good as I can. I'll start on something simpler for my first build (telecaster guitar) and hopefully pick up some skills before attempting a 5 string bass

It's got wood screws. If I try to screw it down further it starts to stress the pickup outer cover. There is some sponge in the cavity but there's not a lot of depth to play with and the sponge is pretty compressed already. It might well need the cavity routed deeper to allow a bit of adjustment
Maybe, but I don't really care or rather, not so much my concern. The guy can either cut it within the confines of the band or we get someone else in. I'm all for being supportive, but there are limits and not being up to a required brief is one of them. If you can live with those confines, then fine..you have a way ahead, if you can't, then something will break.
That's it in a nutshell really. Either you commit to the band and do what is necessary - and that means proper practise at home, or you don't put yourself out there

Oh and another thing - the distortion isn't quite so bad with your new BB & that's what I used on the samples. The original BB distorts even more.
Firstly, congratulations! That is a restoration and a half. Given the initial condition, one would find it difficult to believe that was the same instrument. Seriously, top job. I'm not surprised that the pickup distorts the front end of your mixer. What came off the original pickups was hot to say the least, and I am sure that those and repros will clang against the rails quite happily on transients. I bet that had the BB circuit originally been designed to run off a single 9v supply it would have had....problems! That mid-range burp is perfect. Just perfect. Anyway. Can you find out how much shipping would be to Finland then? Ta.
Many thanks, although the credit needs to go to Andy for the job he's done. On the sound samples it's definitely not overloading the mixer. It does the same going through my practise amp (an old powered wedge monitor). I thought it was the amp that was dodgy when I was playing it after fitting the new pickup, but the signal on the mixer was nowhere near overloading either. I might have to take the pickup out again and compare the height to the old one - I have a suspicion it might be slightly taller than the original. There's hardly any room to lower it away from the strings and the gap between the top of the pickup and the bottom of the strings is only about 2mm.
I'd be thinking he has retention and memory issues and this doesn't bode well
(Big assumption being made here) Get him to lay off the weed for a few weeks

Sound Samples First of all disclaimers: There seems to be a bit of distortion when I play too hard. This is within the bass and happens whichever of the two BB pre-amps I use. I suspect that the replacement pickup is a little hotter than the original, but cannot take it down any further from the strings at the moment. It's obviously a niggle to be investigated I don't usually noodle along like this & have no prepared clever bits to play - excuse the fluffs! I have a bit of a hangover still from last night - excuse the fluffs Having said that the samples should be enough for you to get an idea of the tone Rotary Tone Control with the Tone Pot Up Full Rotary Tone Control with the Tone Pot at Minimum Rotary Tone Control While Noodling Along to Drums I hope those links work Edit: Just to say, I have tried to keep the tone as unadulterated as possible, The bass is plugged directly into my Behringer Xenix 1622 mixer (with USB output into the PC) and then recorded within Reaper. There is no EQ or effects applied, just gain staging.

It Lives Again Prepare for the photo-fest! As promised here a few nicer pictures. Enjoy Unfortunately there was some damage around the jack socket that has been glued up and an additional washer added for some extra strength I'm sure you'll agree that Andy has done a fantastic job on the refinish - a job to be proud of. I'll have a go at some sound samples...
My old band played a Friday night at a Con club, all OK; our usual mix of pop+rock, 50s-90s. So they rebooked for a Saturday. Cool Nobody told us that Saturday was the night the punters danced. And by "dance" I mean "waltzes". We were not well received.
We had a gig like that once. We were booked in play in a night club on a Tuesday night. We arrived and set up. It was getting towards time to start playing but the place was about empty. The owner assured us that a coach load were turning up. Sure enough the coach arrived and a load of elderly couples got off - all of the women carrying a plastic bag. They then sat around the edge of the dance floor and got out their silver dancing shoes. It was a ballroom outing! As luck would have it all of us had previously been in a showband together and proceeded to play a selection of quicksteps and foxtrots. Not quite what we were expecting and certainly one of the strangest gigs we ever played
D.I.V.O.R.C.E. by Dolly Parton.
The bride requested that - none of us knew it
We played knees up mother brown on one gig, and Mrs Brown who happened to be dancing dropped dead on the dance floor. After the ambulance left and it was decided we should play for the last half hour to ease the tension. But every number we played had some morbid connotation. most songs seem to have heaven in the lyrics or I would die for you, I think by the fourth attempt we were told to call it a day as nobody was in the mood for dancing by then. It's a good thirty years ago but still one we would rather forget.
You couldn't make that up - classic!

Someone has just sung a selection of songs from Les Mis. Great voice, but at a wedding?!
-
It's like a club shop window and I'm wondering what the hell I'm doing here. (Insert blasphemous statement)

I'm currently at a wedding reception. We are doing a guest spot later as we've known the groom for years. The reception is in an ex-RBL (Royal British Legion - a bit like a working mens' club for you younger readers) where he was entertainment secretary for a long time. There are a lot of acts on before us - all singing along to backing tracks. Anyway the first singer up opens with (and remember the occasion) ... Cry Me A River. Hard not to laugh!
Sounds like the shielding could be improved, or a slight earthing fault exists. Don't trust graphite paint! Copper shielding throughout. Having to do this aro und the 5-string 51 P bass I'm fitting with a modified SB-1000 circuit. Hoping it silences even single coils!
Yes, it only has the original graphite paint currently - which is only in the main recess, not under the pickup. I'll get some decent copper shielding.
