That's lovely. My first ever bass was one of these, but obviously a much older model (new in 1987 maybe) as it wasn't active. One of the kids is using it to learn on now.
Have an unfeasibly early bump on me. -

If that's a problem, I could take some off your hands to help you out?

Why did this thread die? I just read it all and really enjoyed it.

What's the ramp for?

I just got a Warwick 5 string NT for your exact budget. It's a fantastic bass, great sound, easy to play, lovely neck, really solid, chunky feel to the whole bass. The only bugbear I have with it is that it's quite heavy and it neck dives really badly.

You made me curious, what does it do then?
Whatever they are feeling is, in that moment at least, real. And as every note you play intertwines with what they are feeling, you become part of that moment too.
This never happened when I was fronting a thrash band. -
Hi, when you say mid-Norfolk, are you talking Norwich, or somewhere like Kings Lynn?
-
Got it, you're a hero.
Thanks a lot.

I tend to hum riffs a lot, then I sit down to work them out on the bass and realise they consist of two or three notes. So I abandon them.

I'm about ready to kill our drummer, for something totally unrelated to the band. He's really let me down at work and shown me no loyalty whatsoever. I'm not sure what to do at the moment, because I don't want to let the guitarist down as he's never been anything but a good friend to me. Thankfully, we're not rehearsing this week because I know I'd be tempted to deck the bl00dy drummer!

What a good idea for a post. I could do with a few beginner-level slap songs to mess around with, just for solidifying basic techniques.

I think they need pointy headstocks.

Cripes, what does an open F# sound like? Or do you just feel it?
-
I'd be concerned because the post reads like those 'your wife will be exhausted with your new stamina' emails I keep getting from dodgy pharmacists in Africa.

I think you're all right really. Playing is playing and it's all educational from a musical standpoint. Plus the opportunity to play live regularly (and not in some grotty pub with two old blokes at the bar for an audience) is a big incentive.
-
I expressed an interest in trying out for a local function band, not really my sort of thing but I figured it would be regular live work and little 'management' responsibility for a change. The band leader sent me their playlist, 64 songs, all classics I suppose (in an MOR way), but all new to me from a playing point of view.
I'm going to have to pass on this opportunity, but feel like I should be using this list to get these songs under my belt for the future. The trouble is, how much of an idiot am I going to feel sitting there learning Lady In Red, Black Velvet and suchlike?
I think I've hit a critical point in my life, where the musical 'integrity' of my youth is now exactly balanced by my being nearly 40 years old. I'm getting so old that I just want to get out and play anything at any opportunity, but I'm not so old that I'll play any old rubbish.
What do you reckon? Would you learn a load of songs that aren't your style at all to get work? Have you ever played exactly the sort of music that you really love in any case, or is it always a compromise? Should I stop navel-gazing and just play the bloody thing until my fingers bleed? -
I played (and sang) Mandatory Suicide in a band for a while - that's a pretty good one. Araya is not the best bassist out there and the bass never gets much prominence in the mix, but I still wanted to be him for years. That ESP bass is fabulous by the way.

I'd be really interested in this but I can't find it anywhere, do you have it in PDF? Don't suppose you'd consider emailing it?

You nerd.
