Funny that this has come up recently as i have been looking at my own hyperdrive and thinking of ways to either miniaturise it or veroboard it to make it fit into an acceptable enclosure size. I use it as an always on subtle bit of grit and rarely change the settings and haven't found anything that sounds as good in this capacity. The input control i never have anywhere but on full so im inclined to remove it and reaplce with a suitable resistor. all the other controls i would like to keep just for the occasional tweak if necessary. i dont want to really mod this pedal just to miniaturise it. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Thought i would finally get round to putting this up. Chain is: Bass > His Lordship (Tweaked DIY Guv'nor MK1, used for distortion) > Ashdown Lomenzo Hyperdrive (Always on just to add a hint of grit) > The Hulk (Tweaked DIY TS808 Tubescreamer, used for overdrive) > Iron Man (Tweaked Civil War Muff, used for fuzz) > Korg Pitchblack Tuner info on the pedals can be found in the DIY effects thread!

The mode switch changes the clipping section between red LEDs and asymmetric 1n914 diodes. It's quite nice to be able to swap between the two although its usually set on the LEDs which is what the standard guvnor uses.

The final pedal that i have made is my "Iron Man" pedal, kind of got on a bit of a theme after the hulk pedal! This is one of the simpler ones that i have made and is a Civil war big muff with a couple of mods, one to make it more bass friendly and another to remove the mid scoop from it. This is a dark sounding fuzz and I'm still learning what sounds i can get out of it but so far it is pretty good if not a bit bass heavy!! These are all the pedals I've made so far, promised the girlfriend i won't make anymore for the time being! although I'm tempted by possibly a modified rat.. The third pedal image was a Tubescreamer TS808 with switchable mods for increased gain, bass and boost. This one is called The Hulk. This was a pain of pedal to make and get working correctly, i got a dodgy batch of capacitors and used some cheap switches. After learning my lesson and buying some good quality switches it turned out pretty well. It has a great overdriven quality thats not too in your face and it retains the original tone of the bass very well. This one is now a permanent fixture on my pedal board when i need a little bit more oomph although i only use the extra bass switch the others are always left off! This pedal was my second build called "His Lordship" and is a clone of a Marshall Guv'nor with a couple of tweaks to make it a little more bass friendly. This thing is amazing! I got it hoping for a RATM type distortion tone and it fits the bill very well. The mods to add a bit more bass was essential to making this sound great on bass. This has been on my pedal board since the day it was made and i doubt i'll get rid of it. I thought i would start putting up some pictures of the effects that i have made. I only started making these around christmas so still a novice. My very first pedal build was a Wooly Mammoth with a relax knob (so it worked better with my stingray) and bass blend that i called "Hairy Mastodon". Sounds Awesome however i rarely use the bass blend function and found it hard to coax a sound that i liked in a band setting. this one currently sits in a drawer waiting for me to do something with it! The only other problem is from the positioning of the knobs, it makes hitting the footswitch a challenge at gigs, with poor light and a few beers inside me! What's the worst bass you've ever owned or played?
Wilson_51_ replied to Marc S's topic in Bass Guitars
I once borrowed a Silvertone Paul Stanley bass off a friend who bought it on a whim. That thing wasn't great, no matter what i tried it sounded awful and i couldn't get the action to any reasonable level. when i gave it back to my friend, he asked what i thought to it, I had to be nice to him as i could see he adored it! He never bothered to play it, just kept it for years in a closet.. -
Howard made me a white pickguard, sent off the old one and got back a perfect copy but in white! great bloke, top notch!

Bass/guitar rack stand recommendations please.
Wilson_51_ replied to ambient's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have been using a Warwick Rockbag "multiple guitar rack stand" for about 5 years now and its held up pretty well. i did modify it slightly by covering the foam with cotton as i found it was sticking to some of my basses and leaving marks. -
just got back from recording in the studio, took both precision and stingray.. tried both... the stingray won!
-
I recently swapped to playing a P after years of playing my stingray exclusively. i find that the Precision has something that just works, although i miss playing the stingray in my band. doing some recordings tonight down the studio, i'll be bringing both basses and then ill pick which one works for which song! it's nice to have a choice!

Hey, had 5 minutes free so i thought i would put up some sounds of a couple of the pickups you mentioned. I have two precisions one has Fender RI 62 Pickups, Rosewood fretboard and Gotoh 201 bridge: https://soundcloud.c...on/fender-ri-62 the other has Seymour Duncan SPB-1 Pickups, Maple fretboard and Standard Bridge: https://soundcloud.c...ur-duncan-spb-3 I Apologise for the playing, was a quick one just to see what was what! Both basses were run through my audio interface into Logic 9 with no EQ or effects added. both played finger style with a run through with tone open and closed. Simon

don't suppose you have a picture of it? maybe something as simple as adding a different coloured pickguard or adding bridge cover may make you like it a bit more? strange what the smaller things can do! at the end of the day I have found refinishing basses myself not too bad but unless your amazing at it you'll never get a truly professional look. I have one bass that's been refinished a few times, the first time was with car paints, which looked ok but the lacquer was sticky for months, it would stick to my arm and to any stand it would sit in. i then refinished it with stuff from manchester tech and the finish is pretty good but i could never get the high gloss finish.

Bought another wiring kit off john, came in the usual ridiculously fast time and worked a treat. lightning does strike twice! thanks again!

Just Fitted a Pickguard that arrived this morning! must say it is perfectly made and fits the bass exceptionally. Much thanks to the Doc! Really nice bloke with top notch skills!

I would have to put a Big +1 for Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, preferably the live version off of Pulse, it just has so much emotion to it!
-
Just fitted a wiring kit that i was only enquiring about yesterday! He seems to defy time with how fast he can ship out a kit. Works absolutely perfectly and having the connecting blocks is a stroke of genius for changing pickups without faff-ing about! Excellent communication and all round awesome guy! Many Thanks!

Peavey Milestones are not too bad for a cheap bass. I still have the one that originally got me into playing bass. it has a relatively thin neck which i like and is quite easy to mod. The pick up routes are standard size so you can pop most things in there, as is the bridge so can easily be changed and the neck pocket can fit a fender neck on. The only thing that I found to be a problem was that the tuners don't have the same base plate as any of the hipshot ones, so you would have to drill new holes if you want to change them! The one i have has been through a few changes in its life starting as standard blue one with white pickguard. it then had Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounders added and was resprayed camouflage colour with tread-plate pickguard. also added strap locks and block inlay stickers! This was for when i was in a heavy metal band. sorry for the poor picture it's the only one i could find! And recently it has been overhauled again since that band ended. It is now Olympic white with Black tread-plate pickguard and has been defretted!! Hey all i am currently in the process of doing a defret on a peavey milestone. i have managed to get to the point where i am trying to work out what form of "protection" to use on the fretboard. I was going to leave it natural and just play the snot out of it, but after playing for an hour i already have some light grooves appearing. my options as far as i can find are: super glue - stewmac have a tutorial some sort of varnish or lacquer i have however stumbled across this Halfords lacquer i was wondering if it may work and be a simpler than any other options, it does say "ideal for protecting garden furniture" or am i just being hopeful! any help or past experiences are much appreciated. MusicalAccessories bass necks on ebay... anyone bought one?
Wilson_51_ replied to Wilson_51_ 's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for the response, I guessed that would be the answer but alas i thought there may be a couple of people on here, who have bought them! I'll either take a punt on it or wait for a mighty mite or something to come up. -
Hey Currently in the market for a maple neck for my franken-P and found this neck on the bay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beautiful-one-piece-flame-maple-JB-bass-replacement-neck-64-5mm-heel-width-NEW-/230941272830?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item35c52c2afe Just wondering if anyone had anything to say about it? i'm tempted to take a punt on it but i'm not too sure, especially if the quality isn't up to scratch. Personally i'm loving the flame maple and the measurements are very close (if not the same) to fender specs? if i'm not mistaken. Thanks

Thank you for the welcome! I will have to chuck some songs of ours up when we get around to actually doing some recordings. The only problem I have with listening to pearl jam is that it brings out a real need for me to buy and try to play a fretless... which may happen in the future. My Ray is indeed Pacific Blue burst and since buying it a few years ago, I have struggled to find anything I enjoy playing as much. My goal is to have a Jazz and P-bass so that i can have the "holy" trinity. Although i'm sure i'll get distracted along the way, such as with the frankenbass that's slowly going to come together.

Hello Thought I would finally sign up to this forum, I have occasionally glanced at it and have finally got around to being a part of it. Not that I think I will have a lot to contribute! Little bit about me first, I have recently finished a degree in Music Technology and am in the process of attempting to get a job in the industry. I have been playing bass for about eight years and my gigging experience during this time is, how should i put this.. not as extensive as it should have been. For most of that time I was part of a Metal band that broke up last year, mostly due to the lack of drive and the non existent gigs! I have however just become part of a new band that is focused more towards Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden style music but all originals. Equipment wise i'm currently using a Musicman Stingray through an Ashdown ABM500 with 410 cab for playing with my band. I also have a Peavey Milestone that was my first bass, that i have messed around with a bit and am in the process of making a franken-P-bass out of random parts when i collect enough of them! Simon
