  1. I often wonder why someone doesn't make a 'cover' which could snap over the end.
  2. Yes, it is with a headless design anyway... just pass the string through the clamp, activate the clamp and cut off the excess. I used the next heaviest gauge up to my normal set on a 34" (so 45-105 instead of 40-100). After some experimentation I found I preferred to use a 4 string set with a high C (32). To avoid the spiky string ends, once I clamp and chop I remove the string from the clamp again and chop off nearer to the actual part of the string which is held by the grub screw so once put back in and tightened the ends don't come out of the clamp. I don't think I've ever used the word clamp so much but I quite like it. clamp clamp clamp.
  3. Ah yes I did see that - sliding pickup, cool! IIRC the scale was about 20"? Love the look of your bass by the way, assuming it was the one advertised here.
  4. I much prefer the 70s spacing myself, you might also find a manufacturer who makes a rear pickup that can do both settings (I know Sadowsky do one) but then things start getting complicated!! I'd say that the rear pickup being nearer the bridge might give your overdriven sound a bit more 'bite' and definition... sounds like an afternoon on YouTube for you, sir.
  5. Just click ‘Edit’ on your first post and modify the title, or ‘report’ the post with the little flag icon or report text in the corner and someone will lock it. Moving sold items to another forum - as you have just shown it’s hard enough to get people to mark items as sold - plus a mod would have to move the posts and that could become quite a task. Also it wouldn’t help our Google rankings. The search index works very well now - although it’s a little fiddly (but getting better with each update) - perhaps go to the advanced search and make sure you select the right filters! Cheers
  6. On a 70s the rear pickup is in line with the tone control. I find it really weird how most jazz makers don’t mention the spacing (it’s not always easy to tell is the bass has non standard controls etc) Its the single biggest thing you can do to influence the sound!
  7. Nicely done, congrats to new owner
  8. I don't see any reason to lock - Scott is a lovely bloke and a bass playing legend - if you're sick of his ads then it's your fault for being on the internet! lol! (Not aimed at anyone specifically) I welcome bass related adverts of any type, especially compared to the new breed of 'in it together' type TV ads for other stuff. Cheers
  9. I’ve got Kala down although they only partly fit the brief... who are KAM? Any links?
  10. This video is my favourite way to show what a Smith sounds like. Some really tasty grooves This is a lovely looking bass - and a cracking price!!!
  11. Yes I think it’s pretty clear that we’re weird and logically you must be four times weirder! But weird is good. The MUB looks great, did you try one somewhere or are you just going for it? So Mayones next?!
  12. Did you seek express permission from John Hall (Rickenbacker CEO) before you infringed his copyright in your so called dream? You’d better watch your back!
  13. Yeah I can’t be bothered to reach that far any more
  14. I think they’re a bit longer than the half scale type I’m referring to (with the exception of the Marleaux) unless he’s made another... I’ve seen a few good home builds actually and Andy at Wingbass is always helpful with advice and happy for people to make their own which is cool.
  15. Great! I meant to tag a bunch of people I know who have a mini bass - thanks for chiming in! What specs have you gone for, or was it a finished bass?
  16. Alright folks You know that I like gadgets, and some of you know that I bought a mini bass a few years ago and filled it with bells and whistles. For playing synths or noodling away with caked in reverb and delay this little thing absolutely rocks. Kick in an octave pedal and some distortion and it's the heaviest fattest sounding piece of wood on the planet. Mine is made by Wingbass (made by Stanbaugh). I know there are other owners here too. I'm tempted to get a fretless version and I've been looking around at other manufacturers who make basses like this, and was wondering if I had missed anyone. A few years ago I don't think they exited at all, but it seems like lots of companies are doing them now, at least to use up offcuts of wood!! So far I have found: Mayones https://mayones.com/basses/cali4/ I quite like the look of these but Mayones never answer emails so that's put me off a bit. Also not sure if they do fretless and don't REALLY want to go custom, I'd rather buy one already made! Stradi http://stradi.pl/ Came to my attention after one sold on here. Very ornate, some look amazingly well crafted but I rather like the simpler designs. I like how they are in a section called 'Little Things' Kala https://kalabrand.com/collections/california-ubass Not quite the same, but these solid bodied ones can take strings with a metal wrap but I've never heard one and think they are a bit expensive, plus the bridge is naff Grossman https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Grosmann_Travel_Walnut.html Despite the builder spamming the piss out of every website on the planet and pretending not to own the company, these little basses look 'similar' to the Mayones effort Marleaux https://www.marleaux-bass.com/marleaux-bass_consat_sopran.html OK a little bit big at 22" but fairly close. Trouble is unless you go half scale you need custom strings - half scale you just chop your usual ones in half! Mub https://www.mauriziouberbasses.com/miezo Don't know much about these but they look well crafted - necks similar to Leduc Mihado https://mihado.com/product/fingybass/ These look a bit low end and crude but still good for them I say VB Custom Basses https://vbcustomtravelbass.com/gallery Saw these on FB. Some cool looking original designs. BTW if you think these basses are JUST for TRAVEL and PLAYING THROUGH AN OCTAVE PEDAL then they are not at all - they are inspiring, fun and like playing a proper bass. they are NOT GUITARS! NNNOOooooo000ooooooooooo... Please let me know if you have seen any brands I've missed and can add to my list? ta ped
  17. It’s a chicken and egg situation. People are unlikely to put their hand in with no idea about the spec, and if you decide on a spec first then people will say ‘yes but what if’ The only way forward would be for you to put together some mock-up designs, vote for the fave and see if enough will back it.
  18. I’ll only do business with John if he changes his actual name to John E Retro
  19. Is that why the lights in Yorkshire have suddenly gone dim!
  20. Cheers it’s great fun. I’ve looked at the SY1000 and I’m not clear on what it offers that the VB99 doesn’t - I prefer the form factor of the VB99 though. Mainly I use it as a lovely clean preamp, audio interface and bass management centre (tm)
