  1. I think it's a different sort of 'bright' - more of a toppy 'glassy' attack from maple than the 'zing' a new string makes. You can even hear it with flats, perhaps more so. One of the reasons I like maple board P basses is because it helps give those octave pops a bit more snap.
  2. I’m sure you know the rules - you’re not allowed to post your own adverts here 😉😂
  3. Several glasses of it makes me round and punchy
  4. I suppose the thing is that some of us have probably played tens or even hundreds of Precision basses (as an example) over the years and have found that maple is brighter on average. It would seem to bear out from peoples observations generally. As for the second part - the audience can't tell the difference - I think we all agree that we don't play bass for the audience alone and enjoy the minutiae that makes playing bass or any instrument such a passion.
  5. 107 to be exact - I have 87 so far and presume some will but two or more and some won't buy any, so need a few more to reach the goal. I'm also looking at another supplier so it may already be 'past the post'
  6. Any other takers? I'll make a call on Saturday whether to go for this or not!
  7. Yeah they definitely sound different, as does ebony or composite. Neck construction plays a big part too. From a physics perspective, the strings don’t touch the body either but anything that affects how the string vibrates will have an effect.
  8. Hi folks Ive always quite liked these basses. Are the pickups 60s or 70s spacing, or do they do both? Cheers ped
  9. I don't think I'd ever have a custom built. Although I think I know generally what makes up a bass that suits me, I know there's something about the sum of the parts and the way they work together that cannot be quantified or specified. I'm sure some of us have at some time had more than one example of what is 'the same model' bass but found they sound, play or feel slightly different. I'd much rather find the bass for me by trying lots that have already been built, and upon finding one that feels right, adjust and modify it as necessary. I'm 100% sure that if I specified a custom build that was on paper exactly the same as 'my bass', it would sound feel and play completely differently.

Actually scrub that. I’m off to bed. This is mental.

So why that instead of a squier for £200? If all FSOs are the same?

They’re all Forum Shaped Objects - but some are created more equal than others. Hey I think you’d like Animal Farm!

    But an FSO, right?

So why don’t you play a Harley Benton FSO?

I think we’ve established they might not be the bass for you.
  17. Thanks to all so far - maybe we can get this ‘funded’ over the weekend!
  18. IME the main difference in sound isn’t the style or type of pickup but more where the pickup is located. I mean everything comes into play but that’s what makes it difficult to generalise and why we must all own lots of basses 🤔
  19. No worries, I’ve never tried the multiamp but maybe other have used both. The SY1000 and VB99 type units have so many things you can adjust; even their model of their own pedals give many more options for playing with so I don’t doubt you’ll be able to dial in what you want!
  20. I’ve been using the V-bass (and now the VB99) for twenty years or so. With a GK bass or not they are superb multi fx/preamp/synth/audio interface units!
  21. I’ve found the only way out is to keep on diggin’ 😂
  22. You might as well
  23. I don’t think there’s anything left to say here. I suggest you two get in the phone and chat instead of sniping via the forum. I hope you manage to find a solution and can both put this to bed. Thanks
  24. Hi folks This GR20 is in great condition (some marks from foam tape on the back) all functioning properly and great fun. I had it set up in a very specific way so you’ll probably want to reset it and start again. Included is the proper PSU and you can find the manual online (I’ll post a link here later). Postage will depend but probably about a tenner max next day. Cheers ped
