Here's yours To post on other peoples, search the forum to see if they have one already (I searched the 'feedback' forum only for topics with bubinga5 in the title) and reply to the thread. If they don't have one, make one. HTH

Your human skin is like an Elixir exterior string wrap keeping the middle (relatively) fresh... oh and your hair is like the fraying end silk of a flat wound string lol (all meant in the nicest way possible of course)

I just can’t wear T shirts with stuff written in them any more. Suddenly just don’t like it! I’d rather people saw me as a blank canvas of mystery and intrigue. Which brings me to another point, why on earth would someone pay well over the odds for a shirt with SUPERDRY JAPAN 🇯🇵 on it?! The mind boggles

I’ve shared this video loads but THIS is what a Smith sounds like. It’s quite hard to find good videos like this for some reason, nearly all the vids are really badly recorded or filmed on a potato

Yes, in fact I’ve played/recorded a fair bit of library music over the years (dad worked in TV). Fun to play but I accept probably not that fun to listen to! Again I do really like some Vulf and I’ve only heard some of the instrumental pieces so I’m not talking about them specifically. I’ll try and find that link. Among the bands there was one really modern and hifi sounding band who were great, I haven’t fully delved into them yet so will need to dig it out again anyway.

I find a lot of modern 'Funk' like that. I recently found a list of the top 20 funk albums of 2018 and nearly all of them have low-fi recording technique to make it sound 'funky' - which of course does the opposite.
-
I must admit the music leaves me a bit cold, too. I love funky playing but it’s like Vulf try and be SO retro/hipster that it puts me off. That and he’s better than me and that’s not fair.

Playing an octave up actually sounds great and you can hear yourself really well over your backing. I thought it would sound weedy but in fact it’s quite the opposite. I’m not a solo player one bit and my Wing is a full on groove machine. The sound is very hifi and rich. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it with a band but yes I look at it as an instrument in its own right. When I’m practicing it’s not playing standard bass lines, I’m noodling and grooving and the ability to get a great low action makes the Wingbass the best option for me. The spacing means transferring to a full scale five string feels the same.

Well luckily I’ve already got one but I think importing one would be scary, I’d rather let a shop take the risk! Yes Bass Direct sometimes have some in stock and The Gallery have some, too - they’ve got a beautiful four string in at the moment, a really old one. https://thebassgallery.com/products/ken-smith-bt4

I haven’t taken my Wingbass abroad yet but will do so soon. I took it on our annual holiday to Wales last year and it was brilliant to have to noodle on whilst sitting in my hammock watching Sybil playing with the cows. The size makes it perfect for travel; I think the original concept was to make a hand luggage sized bass for flying (hence the name)

Exactly this Actually the coating is very expensive and a closely guarded secret (Elixir won’t even let me visit their factory because they also do military applications of the Gore coating there). Given the tech in these strings and how long they lash, I think the price stacks up well in comparison to others.

Excellent. Yes it’s a shame they’re so hard to get hold of in the UK, I think for a long time they had no UK distributor/importer and I’m not sure they still do, maybe Bass Direct? but the chances of people trying one are fairly slim unless you see a second hand one for sale.

As I said on the KS thread, that looks like a beautiful bass... where did you get it from?
-
Lovely wood figuring on that. Too many strings for me but I bet it sounds amazing.

Sounds reet good!

My problem is that jobs like this really interest me but the way they're worded makes me feel massively de-skilled. By that I mean that I think I could do many of the jobs I think it refers to but I have no formal qualifications in them, which presumably would put a stop to any potential application. I do find it surprising that 'startup' type companies often do this even though most of the people at the helm have followed a similarly unconventional less certificated path. It makes me think sometimes that you basically have to decide at 16 what you want to do for the rest of your life because if you try and change industry at a later date you won't have the experience and particular value alignments of the new post. I know that's not exactly it but I'm trying to explain how I feel about it. Although running this site has taught me a lot and I think developed my skills hugely, in my experience even if i word it in management speak, employers don't want to read the sort of language they use in their ads, and it's difficult to 'sell' skills you have but which haven't been accredited.
