I'm on the lookout for something that might serve as a practice tool for the road. (I suppose ideally with some tone-shaping pre/DI backup/other capabilities...) The VB99 is surely not that! Haha. Nice to learn about it, though. It looks frightening!
Well it's definitely not battery powered! Like you I'm looking for a little practice tool too, this works nicely but maybe check out the Korg Pandora if you can find one. Actually I don't think that has a D.I. I'll let you know if I find anything. Everything I've found is missing at least one thing. Pick any but one of these!
I think it does- as the gain goes up, a compressor kicks in or something.
My wife says WHAT DID HE SAY! YOU SHOULD STOP VISITING THAT BLOODY FORUM. IF YOU BUY ONE I'M LEAVING. Gak.co.uk you say..
I might give that a go later on to see what I can come up with.
How many milliseconds later?

Believe me we wouldn't do a thing to the site if we didn't have to. Unfortunately the older software gets left behind and is vulnerable to issues as it gets older (aren't we all) and the company who make it also want to sell you the latest and greatest version. Normally I worry that the new version will be a pain but the new BC looks fantastic, it's a massive leap forward in usability and makes this place feel like a right shithole. In fact I'm heading there now and keeping it all to myself.
It'll need a 240-volt power connection and I'm not sure that I'd want to be hooked-up to the National Grid like that. Perhaps what's needed is a Beltpack Nuclear Power source.
That wouldn't be good for your 'elf! ....no? OK anyway if this thing had a compressor I'd be pretty interested. Maybe the next evolution will do.

To be honest I'd find a wireless more useful 'in the studio' (at home in front of my computer) because nothing annoys me more than sitting down to slap some bass then realising I can't reach my cup of tea and having to unplug, collect said beverage and re-seat. In between these steps my little Sybil will steam my chair and leave me in limbo. I got rid of an iRig HD2 because there was a tiny bit of latency... I can't remember how much exactly but it was about the same as a wireless. It would't be a problem if I was plugging into an amp but with headphones I'm used to the immediate response and it became really off-putting once I noticed it. Having said that at the time I posted about it and I don't remember many people saying they noticed. iRig didn't have much of a response either, so maybe it was just mine.

Whilst I'm happy to take all the credit, it's Charic who is doing all the hard work... he's the one to blame when it slows down, too Cheers ped
Drat. I'll have to keep an eye out for something better, I suppose. Congrats! If I'm permitted to be so bold... what's your main unit?
You may! It's a Roland VB99 which has a host of really nice sounding compressors and limiters. there are, of course, many more parameters to choose from and I like having an 'attack' control but the HB does well for the price, size and the fact it's battery powered.
Not much of a manual ped but here it is anyway :-) https://www.dropbox.com/s/m8zq5ubjeadzxt1/Bass%20Expander.pdf?dl=0
Thanks for that. Strange, I don't think my clip light goes red when the signal is definitely clipping. It kind of flickers a bit but not a clear red even when maxed. Thanks again for sending the manual ped

Dropped it off today with John Anthony near Scarborough http://www.johnanthonyguitars.com/home.html Had a lovely time talking shop with John - and he's going to get cracking on this tomorrow. He might take some pictures along the way which I'll post up. Cheers ped

Got mine today. I bought a 'B stock' one, and, whilst there isn't a mark on the pedal, it arrived in a completely sodden cardboard box. The outer box, though (the parcel) was fine. Very strange. I didn't expect it to work at all but plugged in it was fine. Maybe it was the silica gel sachet It's fine for the price. It plays better with passive basses than active - it seems quite easy to distort the pre and I'm not talking nice distortion. Careful use of the gain and input pad means I can get a decent headphone volume with an active bass, and a passive bass is louder and less prone to distorting. That said, my active bass is pretty powerful so it could be that. The EQ section sounds really nice, actually. It didn't come with a manual (does anyone have a pdf?) so I'm unsure of the shelving but it didn't take long to dial in my sound with a few minor adjustments. The blend knob is handy. I wasn't expecting much from the compressor and it's taken a while to get it sounding OK - again, better with a passive as my active seems to push it too much. I prefer a limiter style so I set the threshold and compression accordingly and it sounds pretty natural, and after a few minutes you really don't notice it. Of course A/B comparison with my main unit the difference is clear as day but for a little practice tool, it's fine and a nice addition to have. The line in works, so I can play along with drum tracks. That's all I wanted it for really. Nicely built, all round quite happy for the price. There's not much hiss at all, only when you crank the gain or the compressor is it noticeable, so that's nice bonus. I'm using it with a battery so when the one in it dies I'll see how long they last. As I say though this is going to see fairly irregular use so I'm sure that'll be acceptable too. Will bring to the bash probably if anyone wants to try! Oh and without a manual I was initially confused about the LEDs - green is off, red is on (!?) cheers ped

We're just exporting some info to the new site, part of it being current profile pictures. I'll alert you all as we go forward, chances are there may be a few hours of downtime over he coming week. We'll try and do it at quiet times. Cheers ped

Loved it, thanks for posting. -
Welcome! I grew up in Witney. It's the official 'Home of Basschat' as it was started in the sixth form block at Henry Box School

Everyone is right. Except on a left handed bass, obviously.

Cheers chaps. One limitation is that I can't mount the outputs on the side as that section rests on your leg when playing. I did toy with the idea of the inputs coming out of the front edge which would probably work really well so perhaps we'll look at that possibility on Tuesday. Yeah the Sandberg looks lovely. I already have the GK system in my main bass after years of having it clamped to the bass externally. That bass is a steal with the system installed. Unfortunately most people have just never tried it, and those that have often are trying it with MIDI which isn't the point in it - the GK system is not midi. Everyone says it is, but it's not. Andy, the owner at Wingbass, has been really helpful and is very interested in the project.

OK it's going in on Tuesday for the GK install, it'll take a couple of days. I've been deciding on the layout I'll go with. I have to take into account the amount of space as though the bass may require routing to sink the pickup into the body a bit it would be easier to do without routing the control cavity if possible. Here are some designs. I normally don't bother installing the GK/Mix/magnetic switch because it's not useful on all GK interfaces; on the VB99 I can choose that on the unit, so no need. I also don't normally use the LED which glows red when the GK is active. These designs should all work - the GK 13 pin output is attached to some circuit board and clearance may be an issue so if it can't be mounted neatly like in pic 4 I'll have the plate put on so it sits a bit higher (pic 1,2,3). We could use a wooden plate instead of the black plastic one maybe. In pic 1 and 2 I have done away with the bass master volume (could just leave it in the cavity) as I don't really use it and the GK knob can be assigned to cut the signal right at the end of it's travel anyway if needed. If there's room though I'll keep it (pic 3/4) The 'up/down' buttons are also optional but I like having them. Not sure on placement; to some extent it'll depend on where the main circuit board fits in the back but I quite like the look of both designs - they're all within easy reach when playing... probably nearer the bridge is easier, actually. I'll update as I work my way along! Yep fusion bags for me. I did a review of their double gigbag here somewhere. You can customise the inside to fit your bass exactly. Also if you're going to wear it the straps and waist strap mean it's really comfortable and wears in the right position.

You're on eBay this evening again I see! My gran used to say wind cheater but as a child I thought she was saying 'wind sheeter'. I also thought a dressing gown was called a 'dressing down' Anyway, as you were.
the offcuts make great nut files and pipe cleaners
Ah but my basses all have a zero fret and my house is a rental so I'm not to concerned about the pipes! Any other suggestions?

Most of being a professional musician is your attitude. I think Lionel Richie said 10% aptitude 90% attitude.

Thanks. It seems double ball end strings are a standard length (makes sense) which is just about too short for my purpose but never mind. I ended up getting some of my favourite Elixirs and cut the rest off, which seems a waste but can't be helped!
