Bwahahahahahahaha!!! Time to move to flats, Chris.
But I can't stand the tension!

I'd be interested to try them. Elixir strings were a revelation for me and I can make a set last nearly a year. They suit me down to the ground. I was sure that Gore who make the coating had patented the process of coating the string once it has been wound so other competitors had to coat theirs then wrap the string. Maybe that's not true as these sound like a similar process. I have also tried coated strings by Roto, D'addario and Warwick and none were a patch on the Elixirs, so I presumed it was due to the patented process.

Young lads with some great basses and great playing.
That's pretty obvious. Blue
Great, ok. So you also accept that basses sound different? And that those differences can be interpreted as 'good'? -
I will never understand why some of you guys think it's a particular bass that sounds good

There are certain places or songs where the sound of my Hofner is a perfect match.
Ok! im glad you don't understand you either! -
My German made Hofner Club bass sounds a lot different than my Fender MIJ P basses.
Question - do you like the sound of the actual instruments, if you played the exact same pattern on each? -
How I sound is a result of how much I practice and learn and ultimately own as a part of my playing skill set. Those with a high level of ability are going to sound great on a Ric and they will sound great on a Jazz as well. If you lack ability no bass is going to make you sound good. Take the marginal player that buys a Music Man bass, he's still going to sound marginal. Now, I will say that buying that Music Man bass might be the catalyst that encourages that player to invest more time and structured study into the craft. Ultimately making him a better player and obviously sounding better. Blue
The basses themselves sound different. Am I wrong? -
How much does it weigh? I like that idea a lot. For the combination number, these locks normally have a tab on the inside that you pull out (or in) set the number to your chosen one then reset the tab to make your new number effective.
I see ok thanks, I'll have a look at it a bit more closely. The case is very light actually, all aluminium. Probably weighs about the same as an instrument.
If it opens and closes OK, 0.0.0. is probably the default number. Anyway, if you close it and move the numbers and it won't open you could treat it as a Christmas puzzle. Not to many permutations there.
Haha well I've gone with the safe option and applied gaffer tape to said combination lock.

Has anyone here converted a 4 string to a 5 string?
ped replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
I've seen it done on a bass which I guess wasn't available as a 5 (it was some sort of Rick). Guess it would be fine if you don't mind the tight spacing. -
Here I am with Patrice Vigier himself... really lovely chap (well, we both are...). I showed him a pic of my '88 Passion and he said, quite sincerely, 'Thank you for looking after it'
Lovely bass mate..always liked Vigiers but alas have never played one. I'd love to try a fretless version of your bass.
Thanks, I had a fretless Passion or a few years and really enjoyed it, I had to sell it in the end to pay for 'other things' - mine was a series 3 model, with the 10% graphite neck. Really nice, but I really want a Series 2 100% carbon necked one, which are again very rare (although coincidentally I have a lead on one I'm looking at buying soon)

Love that. Nothing beats the feeling of having a unique bitsa bass, especially when it looks so neat.
This is beautiful, I don't think I've seen an Arpege or a Passion before until now! Both lovely, and different to anything I've personally seen before. The bridge on the Arpege is awesome, looks like you could tow a ship with it!
Thanks, I can't remember where I first saw them but I've had the passion for years and always wanted an Arpege but could only find earlier wooden necked ones or the later design. The full graphite model was always the holy grail... The bridge is very unusual indeed, I thought it had a trem at first! Later they used Kahler hardware which I didn't find as adjustable (I like my action super low). The Passion has always had Schaller hardware. I haven't recorded with this bass yet and it's basically impossible to find anything on YouTube (unless it's an earlier or later model) but I found this guy who has a few vids. He's playing through a book I'm also working through so it's a double bonus. Here you can hear the bass with everything flat: http://youtu.be/5pZRZUXudk4
I'm saying your only going to sound as good as you are as a bass player. Gear does not make any of us sound good, it's all about ability not gear. Blue
But that's a totally different point. Never mind. -
Sounds awesome wouldn't need another bass if it can do them all I suppose I'm sure GAS has other ideas though.
No harm in having a bass in every colour
-
Lovely!
Merci beaucoup mon ami!
-
Mine can go louder or quieter...
Don't get me started on the tonal possibilities with the Passion bass (on left in third pic) because that makes the Arpege seem simple - although even though it's more complicated/versatile, it's not as idiosyncratic as the Arpege! And don't get me wrong, 99% of the time I'm bypassing everything as they sound amazing when totally flat, but it's fun to have options on tap.
Stunning!
Thanks I've just found an interesting quirk with the bass... when the rear pickup (only) is selected, the treble control acts like a midrange control... combined with the filter control this means you can dial in some seriously tight focused bass, from burpy jazz bass to Level 42 'Sun Goes Down'. If you set up that sound on the bass, use the output on the side to your amp, then use the OTHER output on the top (preamp bypass) with a second lead and an A/B box, you can footswitch between the two settings, if you must. I believe the bypass output is intended for studio use although the very early manual I have for the bass suggests it is also a 'charge jack'... given how unconventional this thing is I fully expect it to power my iPhone or something. I told you it was quirky!

It's weird how over the years I've often heard the "it's all in the fingers" thing - but when I ask someone to produce a Musician sound on a P bass, they never do... -
I will never understand why some of you guys think it's a particular bass that sounds good. It's a combination of a few things like ability and a good grasp of EQ. That's 2, there are others. Blue
Yeah it's because we like the sound of a particular bass. I assume you like the sound of yours? No amount of EQ or technique will make a jazz sound like a stingray for example. Cool clip, guys look like they're having fun and it comes through in their playing. -
I think these may have been made by Scott Dixon. The Scott Dixon one is about £500. You did well sir!
Yes that does seem to be the 'case' Where I can find them online they seem to be called the Fender 'Dixon' case and around £400 second hand... I notice the current Dixon case which has a slightly evolved divider system is now £600! I knew it was a bargain, and really useful too, with the wheels and what-not. Obviously mine is a bit dented here and there but it has stickers to say it's been handled by baggage men at Dubai Airport at some point.
