1. It's here. And it's great. Such a lovely sounding amp and seriously loud and full sounding. Rich, clear and punchy. if I can't find another for the stereo setup I may buy a second ABM300 and one of the cabs mentioned above or even a wedge cab. That was I can run channel B through that. Sitting under my desk and hooked up to the VB99 it makes a great sub to go with my office HIFI too. I'll take some proper pics of it this weekend. Looks great; it's been gigged hard and has some mojo. 2. I just listen to music and visualise the bassline, or my own interpretation of it. I have a playlist on iTunes that I add songs to that I want to play when I'm next sitting at my computer bass in hand and same on Youtube. I think some time away from the instrument is a good thing because playing bass is as you know all about listening

  4.
Bloody steal!
I'll be a while before it arrives I think what with the bank hol and all. It'll be fun though I remember putting a cushion on my old one and using it as a seat. Great little amp and I'll make sure I keep this one. If I kept the old one I'd have a sweet stereo setup now... We live and learn I was talking to Mark Gooday today about a BC competition (watch this space) and he's going to see if he can find the original brochure/manual etc. I'll share anything he can find. I also didn't notice the amp has chicken head knobs on it until he mentioned it!
  5.
Was that the one on eBay? I almost went for that...!
That's right. £150 isn't bad - I think I paid over £400 when I used to have one!
  6. Thanks chaps. Mine is a bit beaten up so I might replace the grille. I'll keep an eye out for those cabs and if I find one I'll replace the grilles to match - ashdown have used a few different types so it's hard to keep track!

    My collection!

Last update for a bit to show the completed work (stacked treble/bass changed to two controls) - although I have a new practice amp on the way so I'll probably add that soon enough! 8. Update - it's arrived Hi guys Just bought one of these. I used one years ago and recall it sounded excellent for its size. I've been looking for a small combo to provide a bit of rumble at home when playing through headphones and it'll be useful for small jams with a drummer too no doubt. It's one of the early ones, UK made with a celestion speaker I think. I suppose I could add an extension can but which cabs match its size? I recall the mini 4x8 and 1x15 fit but can't remember it was a while ago. Ideally I'll find a second combo for a stereo setup but they don't seem very common now although they seem to have earned a pretty good reputation since I first bought and sold one in the 90s Cheers ped
  9.
I tried one with a graphite neck at last year's bass show. When I spoke to Martin Sims, he suggested that it wasn't for looks but for a marginally different sound. I could tell the difference between it and a wood necked version. The impression I got was that he felt that the low end of full graphite necked instruments sounded compressed and there was maybe a bit too much 6kHz. I know what he means by that of course, but it just depends if you like that or not. With the wrap those characteristics were there but a bit more muted. Besides, after playing your Vigier why would you need another graphite necked bass? I thought it was fantastic!!
Thanks, that makes sense. So I guess there's still a truss rod? I'm just interested in the tech - not many people manufacturing graphite necks now Cheers ped
  10. So the graphite wrap necks - are they stable or is the wrap mainly for looks?
  11. Loved her Radio album but the newest one is a bit more all over the place but I'm sure it'll grow on me once I get more used to it. I really like her playing.
  12. Heard the new single with Marcus Miller spanking the plank? https://www.youtube....h?v=o7hrk4AGEBE

  14.
From that pic I can tell your bass is well set up and has a good neck!
Funny you should say that because the tech who was doing some electrical bits on my bass the other week said 'Do you want me to set it up for you because the action is too low and there's a lot of buzz' I said 'DON'T TOUCH IT!' because it's been perfected over the years (had it 10 year now) and when I picked it up I played it for him and showed how what works for one person may not work for another. There's no 'best' way to do it and everyone has different requirements but personally I think if you start with a straight neck then you can dial in whatever you need from there.
  15. Yep pretty nice but I do prefer the older ones I must admit the Glockenklang pre and Delano pickups in these are fantastic though, and £900 is a good price.
  16. Straight as an arrow. Most people play my bass and say it's unplayable because the action is so low and there's almost zero relief. I play VERY lightly though and like a bit of clank when I 'dig in'. If I alter my plucking a bit I can get almost the same as my slap sound. Combined with 40-100 strings it's very 'supple' and requires zero effort. When I gigged more I raised it a tiny bit (action, not relief) because with the adrenaline on stage I needed a bit more room, but now I play almost always at home or for recording where I can be exact. Relief is critical for me because my bass has no truss rod so I can't adjust it, it's rock solid (graphite). The newer versions of my bass have a slightly greater amount of relief built in (but still not much) which I didn't feel as comfortable with - again, no truss rod, so I sold it on. Here's a pic of my G string to give you some idea - although again this I suppose shows the action rather than relief but it's about this height all the way along (got a zero fret) https://flic.kr/p/dsv2Tp
  17. Could it be corrected by using some fairly sturdy foam under the pickups?
  18.
Alpher Mako Elite 5: ACG Finn Custom 4: And a little shot of the pair:
Nice Kev got any pics of the headstock of the Alpher? Nice to see a bass with lots of knobs on, welcome to the 6+ club
  19.
They're Bartolini's Ped, the older ones that Zon used to use had that little bp logo on them
I see, thanks, yes I thought they looked like Bart W4 pickups. Love that Schaller bridge, too.
  20.
@tertiumquid : Good ol' Italy @ped : yes it is. I was not aware that there Legacy are very sought after because of the special pickups. The sound is to die for, aggressive, warm and extremely musical.
I didn't notice the pickups, I thought they were the Bartolini pickups used normally - can you tell me a bit about these? Looks like they have a 'bp' logo?
  21.
Luminlay fret markers
Those are new to me - look pretty good.
  22. Time to look at the other side of the coin and have some positivity! What features do you look for in a bass? If you've had a custom made, what was a must-have? Is there anything you'd like to have that isn't readily available? Me:

Graphite necks
Little/no relief on neck
Gadgets (built in tuner, d-tuners, mutes, exciting electronics)
Natural finishes that show just the wood grain, nothing 'showy'
Marvel Strap locks
Anyone? I don't want to have to watch The Hunger Games tonight so please give me an excuse to have a fiddle in the office... (not what it sounds like)
  24.
I found the "One" bass about 3 years ago when I eventually got an Alembic Series II 5 stringer. It is more bass than I expected and easily the most complete sounding and versatile bass that I have ever owned and would cover any genre I was playing with ease. Just because I have found it does not mean that other basses have no place. They have all earned their place and their sound still has a place in the music I play. The thing is I really enjoy playing them live as well as at home and rehearsals, so I don't think it is necessary to offload basses once you have found what you have been looking for. Unless of course thats what you want to do or have to do. It's good to have options and sometimes different instruments inspire you to play differently.
And with that - I think we need to start seeing pics in this thread!
