I suppose it's a bit of a mixed bag for exhibitors... especially if your a one man outfit who's brought a handful of builds along. If you sell everything in the first half hour then then you end up with an empty stand for two days and not a lot of people checking out your instruments... probably miss out on a bunch of orders.
Quite often they'll mark them as sold so they can be taken at the end of the day(s) instead but yeah could be tricky!
Jazzes. Love the sound, the necks and the look, just always feel weird on a strap. I think maybe the offset body shape just makes them feel massive. Always end up back on a precision.
I must admit they do feel really 'thick' to me, and something about a plastic screwed on scratchplate doesn't feel right. I think they look nice from the front but the body shape looks awkward and bloated when at an angle, I think.

Might be easier if I was in NEW York, yeah
Could you not google a picture of a Ken Smith bridge & pickups, zoom it to life size it & take measurements from that?
Possibly. Or go and buy one
-
Hi guys Can anyone with a Ken Smith do me a favour? Can you measure the distance from the string saddles (averaged) to the back of each pickup? I'm just re-making my Smith setting on my Vbass and it's the only one I didn't write down! Cheers ped
Yes, it is, but within it he clearly says if he had a signature model it would only have one pickup, one control knob etc. He seemed quite sure about that!
So did Mark King and look at him now! (not really)
It suits the theatrical nature of the band. It's no more or less silly than Bootsy's star bass.
This - suppose it suits him, but presume they won't sell many of these to anyone else.
Can you post a pic showing the bass side of the binding (with the dots), please? Also, in your Photobucket set there's a pic of the back of the headstock with a different set of tuners on but it's difficult to tell whether it's actually from the same bass? I'm pretty convinced I could get comfortable with most instruments given time to tweak and adjust. For me it's more about the amount of relief on the neck and the action (arrow straight and super low) which is a deal breaker for me. Several basses I've loved the sound of just haven't been capable of a setup which suits me. Having said that, I did have to play a Gibson EBo once. It was fun and changed my style and what I played to suit the 'feel' of the bass but it's not something I'd be able to use very often!
Over the years I've amassed a nice collection of basses, all of which have been gigged regularly. But a few months ago I bought a Sandberg VM5 that, for me, is just perfect. It's exactly the sound I've been looking for. It's now my only gigging bass. So now, I don't know what to do with the other basses. I've spent a lot of time (and money, but don't tell the wife) getting them and they're all fantastic in their own way - but I know that they just aren't going to get the use they deserve. So do I thin the herd and take a massive loss selling them? Or hold onto them for the occasional rehearsal? Anyone else been in a similar position?
You won't make a loss selling the others, not unless they're set to rise in value. Sell sell sell and concentrate on 'your' sound with 'your' bass. You can always start messing about with amplifiers next... then pedals.. then... straps? After that, sorry, I can't help you!
I love anything from the simplicity of a P bass (need that tone control though) all the way to this: https://reverb.com/i...ky-blue/similar 4 mini buttons, (activates pickup and puts it into active/passive), then volume, passive tone, stacked hi mid/low mid, stacked treble/bass.
Me too - love simple basses too... but my main instrument has to be a 'swiss army knife'. I like the Big Al. I'd like to try one. Can't help think it would be better with a more fitting headstock though. Also if I had one I'd have to add the Roland controls to that would be one more knob and two buttons

6 knob basses aren't THAT uncommon... are they?
Hey fella, there's some more space, above the strings, for more knobs! Seriously though, that's a lovely looking bass. My pet hate, is mini-switches. They just look cheap, to me. Though, all but one of my basses, has them.
Yes I did consider it! I don't mind a mini switch but agree there must be a neater option, such as a slider switch on the side (recessed) or even one on the back of the bass. As mentioned earlier a pull push pot would be a neat solution but having one knob raised above the others doesn't fit well with my OCD!!
HI Ped, That's a really interesting set up and a good looking bass. I loved the Vigier I tried many years back What sort of music(s) are you involved with?
Thanks, yes these older Vigiers are really something. I do like the new series IV basses too but perhaps they sound a little bit too modern for my tastes. I normally play in the studio doing recordings as I don't have a live band to gig with since moving to York. I'd like to get back into that but actually I enjoy the studio side more - too many bad gigs I suppose! Saying that I haven't done any studio work for a couple of years either, instead playing along with backing tracks and music at home (I have a simple studio setup here with the VB99 and Garageband)
-
Not into push/pull pots either?
Didn't consider those but guess I could lose the switch with one of those.
-
For some reason I just don't like stacked knobs which could reduce the number. I don't like the feel of them, or the height. Then there's the two buttons (not knobs) which are essential for the VB99 and an active/passive switch that I did look at hiding round the back or side but it wasn't really workable.
-
Then there's the knob playing it too..

Recently I asked about turning a stacked bass and treble control into two singles which I prefer. I found a guitar tech in York who was willing to do the job. www.facebook.com/yorkguitardoctor Normally I'm OK with doing the mods myself, but the electronics cavity needed some tidying up anyway and I didn't want to break anything. It's a Marleaux 3 band pre-amp and normally not found in anything other than their own instruments - with no wiring diagram to go on I was in over my head! Stephen did a great job and I'm really chuffed. I'll get some better pics in the daytime but this is the best I can do for now. If you're in the York area and looking for a tech I can highly recommend!! About time she got a new album out. Can't wait! -
Took the clip off my Polytune and stuck it on me headstock Works great!
Yamaha have an artificial aging process they use on the wood for some of their higher end instruments - there are clips on YouTube of Billy Sheehan mentioning it's use on the latest Attitude model. Something to do with the way the Sapp in the wood crystallizes apparently. No idea if there's any real science behind it but apparently they have spent "literally millions of dollars" developing the process according to Billy!
Yep - see post on page 1 from BOD2 a few years ago!

I've been living in York for nearly two years now. I've been happy with my gear for a long time and apart from special items I'd only ever find on BC, I've not needed to look in any music shops as such. Recently I've decided that I need a drum stool for my office and I've even considered buying a guitar so I've been looking at the shops nearby. The one in town (Mor Music) has closed due to flooding, bit of a shame because it looks good. Imagine my surprise to find that just behind the supermarket where I do my shopping there's Gear4music - I knew of them as an online retailer but had no idea that they had a premises and quite an impressive one it is, too. Not a bad range of basses in store, nothing amazing but a wall of instruments (no second hand) and some amplifiers. An even better range online which, I understand, if in stock they can get from the warehouse for you to see in the store. Had a nice chat with the assistant who turned out to be a bassist and BC member. I'm hoping to work with them on some sort of promotion here so watch this space. Cheers ped
