I love anything from the simplicity of a P bass (need that tone control though) all the way to this: https://reverb.com/i...ky-blue/similar 4 mini buttons, (activates pickup and puts it into active/passive), then volume, passive tone, stacked hi mid/low mid, stacked treble/bass.
Me too - love simple basses too... but my main instrument has to be a 'swiss army knife'. I like the Big Al. I'd like to try one. Can't help think it would be better with a more fitting headstock though. Also if I had one I'd have to add the Roland controls to that would be one more knob and two buttons

6 knob basses aren't THAT uncommon... are they?
Hey fella, there's some more space, above the strings, for more knobs! Seriously though, that's a lovely looking bass. My pet hate, is mini-switches. They just look cheap, to me. Though, all but one of my basses, has them.
Yes I did consider it! I don't mind a mini switch but agree there must be a neater option, such as a slider switch on the side (recessed) or even one on the back of the bass. As mentioned earlier a pull push pot would be a neat solution but having one knob raised above the others doesn't fit well with my OCD!!
HI Ped, That's a really interesting set up and a good looking bass. I loved the Vigier I tried many years back What sort of music(s) are you involved with?
Thanks, yes these older Vigiers are really something. I do like the new series IV basses too but perhaps they sound a little bit too modern for my tastes. I normally play in the studio doing recordings as I don't have a live band to gig with since moving to York. I'd like to get back into that but actually I enjoy the studio side more - too many bad gigs I suppose! Saying that I haven't done any studio work for a couple of years either, instead playing along with backing tracks and music at home (I have a simple studio setup here with the VB99 and Garageband)
Not into push/pull pots either?
Didn't consider those but guess I could lose the switch with one of those.

For some reason I just don't like stacked knobs which could reduce the number. I don't like the feel of them, or the height. Then there's the two buttons (not knobs) which are essential for the VB99 and an active/passive switch that I did look at hiding round the back or side but it wasn't really workable.

Then there's the knob playing it too..

Recently I asked about turning a stacked bass and treble control into two singles which I prefer. I found a guitar tech in York who was willing to do the job. www.facebook.com/yorkguitardoctor Normally I'm OK with doing the mods myself, but the electronics cavity needed some tidying up anyway and I didn't want to break anything. It's a Marleaux 3 band pre-amp and normally not found in anything other than their own instruments - with no wiring diagram to go on I was in over my head! Stephen did a great job and I'm really chuffed. I'll get some better pics in the daytime but this is the best I can do for now. If you're in the York area and looking for a tech I can highly recommend!! About time she got a new album out. Can't wait! -
Took the clip off my Polytune and stuck it on me headstock Works great!
Yamaha have an artificial aging process they use on the wood for some of their higher end instruments - there are clips on YouTube of Billy Sheehan mentioning it's use on the latest Attitude model. Something to do with the way the Sapp in the wood crystallizes apparently. No idea if there's any real science behind it but apparently they have spent "literally millions of dollars" developing the process according to Billy!
Yep - see post on page 1 from BOD2 a few years ago!

I've been living in York for nearly two years now. I've been happy with my gear for a long time and apart from special items I'd only ever find on BC, I've not needed to look in any music shops as such. Recently I've decided that I need a drum stool for my office and I've even considered buying a guitar so I've been looking at the shops nearby. The one in town (Mor Music) has closed due to flooding, bit of a shame because it looks good. Imagine my surprise to find that just behind the supermarket where I do my shopping there's Gear4music - I knew of them as an online retailer but had no idea that they had a premises and quite an impressive one it is, too. Not a bad range of basses in store, nothing amazing but a wall of instruments (no second hand) and some amplifiers. An even better range online which, I understand, if in stock they can get from the warehouse for you to see in the store. Had a nice chat with the assistant who turned out to be a bassist and BC member. I'm hoping to work with them on some sort of promotion here so watch this space. Cheers ped

I have a fretwrap which is useful but of course it doesn't mute fretted notes so it's quite different from a mute you'd have on the bridge. I used one of these a while back http://www.bassmute...._mainframe.html Overkill but good fun
Yes and that's something I've not done as yet. I can see that Ped is watching this and he is well aware of the bass that would be at the top of my list. Again, sadly unavailable!
It's a weird one because it's natural to lust after expensive instruments with the (often correct) assumption that they'll be 'the one' but often you'll find that being expense doesn't guarantee it's suitability as an instrument. As an investment it's different, of course. As a result I've bought and sold all sorts until I found 'the one' which I didn't even consider in my original list. Therefore, I'd prepare yourself for a period of buying and selling as you try as many basses as you can but be prepared to lose some money in the process. Even more so if you want to try some more unusual instruments. You could go to somewhere like Bass Direct or Bass Gear to try a few bits and bobs but at the end of the day there's no substitute for living with a bass for a while to really bond with it. Sorry for the boring answer. OK so simple answer is Vigier Passion series II with customised electronics and Roland GK system but I'm just saying that if you asked me that 15 years ago I'd have said something completely different. Personally I'd never have a custom build but I think customising a bass 'chassis' that you really like is the true path to bass nirvana. Edit to add: It's important to explain this to the wife too, so that she isn't offended if you sell the bass and keep swapping it. She's opening a door for you, rather than offering an immediate solution.

Oh and just to update my history with a pic of my VB99. I LOVE this thing, I have it set up in my office connected to my computer so I can play along wit jamtracks on Youtube, iTunes music or record right into Garageband at the drop of a hat, no more spending 20 mins setting everything up, a sure-fire way to kill any spur of the moment inspiration! Just found a guitar tech in York who is going to convert my stacked treble/bass control to two separate controls. I've got two mini knobs to use that match the existing ones. By the way, if you're in the market for some control knobs use this place, amazing selection and they arrived (from the USA) within two days http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/hardware-fasteners-accessories/knobs/2097177

LOVE them. I have 8 of their albums. First discovered them when I heard Gov't Mule covering 'On Your Way Down'
I won't go into the details or reasons but just wanted to post a public thanks to Chris for providing a fantastic service to us low-frequency folks. Amazing responsiveness and a real gent to boot. Cheers mate! Wiggybass
My pleasure, thanks for the feedback. I pride myself on good customer service. And the man above is an imposter and shouldn't be trusted - with a bass or a tractor
The Stingray sound on the VB-99 is excellent. I'm still not quite sold in the Jazz bass modelling, but then my hex pickup is on a Jazz so I can just use the dry signal.
My Jazz Bass model is a copy of David Barard's Sadowsky sound with Dr. John - have a listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWTAekIQecg As you can hear it's a fairly specific Jazz Bass sound. I'm still making a standard jazz patch and working on the Precision one. I'm 100% convinced that if you spend long enough you can make ANYTHING you want with this unit!

Daniel bought my pedal and was a pleasure to deal with. Thanks!

Hi all I have a stacked bass/treble knob on my bass. I prefer to have two seperate knobs to be honest. Anyone know if it's simple to switch? Obviously I don't mind drilling another hole. I can probably get some pics of the pre amp if it'll help. Cheers ped
