1. Yes, normal service will be resumed as soon as it's fixed... we're installing some new stuff and it's being worked upon right now. Shouldn't be long, hopefully. Cheers

    My collection!

Just updating with a couple of better pics of my bass Vigier Passion GK by chiscocks, on Flickr Vigier Passion GK by chiscocks, on Flickr
  4. Thanks for that, very interesting. Do you play with a pick? I've never experienced the coating coming off (but have seen evidence of that on other basses) because I play like a wimp. Do you remember the first version of the strings, I think they called them polyweb, where the coating came off more easily? I literally don't sweat on stage for some reason so I can make a pack last aaaages, I can't remember when I last changed them! I should be bred with a bassist who can actually play to create the 'ULTIMATE LIVE BASSIST' Cheers ped P.s do they have a silk wrap or are they 'naked'

    Thank You KiOgon

I would highly recommend it! I found the install of the GK electronics quite straighforward actually, but the buttons stumped me because I no longer have any decent drills. Most people see it and think 'wow that looks complicated' or 'it must be hard to find the right sound' - 90% of the time I'm bypassing the whole lot, but it's there to use if I like. Why not? 6 knobs, one switch and two buttons. I wonder how some people manage a keyboard!
  6. I've never noticed much difference with string-thru bodies to be honest. What do you have arriving in the post? Yes it's way cheaper and really satisfying to get spot on! I find an essential ingredient in 'clank' is very little neck relief. I don't have a truss rod but mine is built with basically zero which means I can clack away if I like. I've had basses by the same company which were built later which had more relief, set up for the tastes of a wider audience I guess, and found them lacking the same feel and responsiveness.
  7.
I like that! Nice and full, I guess the skinny strings = thin tone thing is a total myth! Nice playing too, that's one filthy bassline
lol thanks. Yes, I think so - let the amp do the work and leave yourself plenty of options with your right hand. I must admit, when getting really 'into it' in the metal band the strings could sometimes feel a bit flimsy, but this helped me hone my right hand sensitivity even more, I think. I wouldn't change back, now.
  8. Ah bloody dropbox! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/85432/USB%203/Canti's%20Wrap.mp3
  9.
I live for the clank! And I like the strings to have some resistance because of my aggressive attack... But I've been tempted to try lighter gauges so that I don't have to play super hard all the time, and to make fast twiddly bits less of a chore!
Give it a try. I play all sorts now (mainly fusion instrumental soul funk.. lol) but used the same setup playing with 'Part III: The Onslaught' (guess what style we played) and I always cut through the mix with massive clarity but the notes had a lot of weight and depth too. This MP3 gives you some idea of my clean sound. What's your setup?

    Thank You KiOgon

Another pic to show the side. I did this with a chisel and hammer I bought from Homebase. I was scared but it paid off. Luckily, being French, the bass surrendered to my attack and let me get on with it! Vigier Passion GK side by chiscocks, on Flickr
  11. Yeah maybe. I'll ask them if they have any plans for them. They seem harder to find these days. I hope they don't stop doing the super lights in Nickel, or I'm screwed!
  12.
I have been waiting for Elixir to bring out stainless strings for ages! Just ordered 5 sets. I find the nickel plated strings to be quite bright compared to other brands anyway. Not quite bright enough for me, so it has been a bit of a trade off due to the primary benefits of long life and silky feel. I do like my string tone to be bright (like DR, D'Addario). I am sure these new stainless strings are going to be very lively...just the way I like normally em!
Nice, check back and tell us how they compare. I find the nickels bright enough for me, but it's always interesting to experiment! Can they be bought with a .40-.95 gauge? {edit, now I'm at my computer} Ah, no you can't. Well, that rules them out for me.
  13.
Sounds wicked! I don't have that sort of self control
Lol well I haven't changed my action for 6 years so I'm really happy with it. I remember when I first played this bass and it was really satisfying because it was the sound I had in my head. I've tried other strings but I guess I'm too weak to slap them properly! It's got to the point where I get flustered when someone hands me a bass with thick strings and a high action, it feels like my hands are numb. When I was at TC Electronic I played one of their lakland jazz basses and I'm afraid I sounded horrible!
  14.
where is the "ask a question button/feature going to go?" - maybe if it opened on the chat/question page first before the details? keep the focus on the community and comunication rather than the commerce
It's already there - check the bit under the photos on the listing I posted. As I say, this is the basic plugin and we can adapt it as we go, but first let's see how it goes. I think it's going to work really nicely. I do agree with comments like Rick's post above - remember I use this place as a bassist too (I just happen to co own it) so your concerns are the same as mine. However I think people will still get by with the Q+A bit or by PMing the seller and forging a bond that way, It might mean some people start a thread on the forum talking about a type of bass they've spotted in the marketplace. What it will definitely mean, however, is that the people who run BC will have far more time to help in other areas and effectively stop them having to step in when comments are seen as derogatory or unhelpful, which they sometimes can be. I'm sure it'll work very well and I think the drawbacks are far outweighed by the ease of use and the enhanced sellability it'll provide. Being able to see the latest 60 things listed at a glance is pretty cool. ped
  15. Hi guys Thanks for the comments. The 4% is calculated by how many paypal transactions have come through as donations (either random OR from selling items) against the total number of things listed over the last month. WHilst some of those listed items may not have eventually sold, it's the best I could do with my quick assessment. I agree it's very low,so hopefully we'll see this reversed now that everyone has the chance to pay a couple of pounds for the gallery view. We thought it was important to allow free access to the classifieds, though - out of the kindness of our hearts and the fact that more listings makes us more visible on the web and can attract advertisers, so it's kind of win-win. Please though, for all our sakes, take advantage of the paid option!!If nearly everone avoids it, we might have to make charging mandatory. My feeling is that most members here are quite grateful for the facility so having a gallery item shows they care By the way, I'm in the process of adding Sagepay to the site so users can pay via card rather than using PayPal (though you can use card through them too without being a member) Thanks ped
  16. John kindly helped me modify my bass with some electronics the other week. Lovely, friendly and kind bloke with a real talent for all things bass. His actions sum up the feel of BC - don't hesitate to deal with this guy! Cheers ped
  17.
So, during the changeover period will any existing threads need to be recreated in the new marketplace in order to be able to continue to answer questions about them? Also, is bumping still achievable in the new styley or is it a bump free world that works very differently from now on?
We'll have to see what happens with existing threads but we'll probably have to close them and ask users to PM the seller unless the seller relists. Maybe we can make the forum locked to new posts but still allow replies. We'll investigate this week. Bumping isn't happening just yet - there are plugins we can buy that will allow it but with 60 items a page, an item listed in the most popular section (basses for sale) will remain on the first two pages for approximately 3 weeks, so it shouldn't be necessary especially with the gallery view making items more visible and being able to filter out sold items too. Again, as many people disliked and were annoyed by persistent bumping than those who liked to bump daily. I wonder if it's actually very fair to do that. We currently have a 36 hr rule but that requires constant vigilence by the mods and it's not really enforcable. We may custom make a bumping button that is only allowed to be used once every 36hrs but we'll see how it goes. By the way sorry I missed the mobile theme question - again, that's coming once we can afford it. We're trying to bring you the best experience we can, with close to zero money, remember Cheers guys
  18.
Madness! I can imagine with steels though you get an awesome clank with plenty of overtones
Actually I play so lightly that fret buzz and clank are only there if I wish, and when I do, I can dig in a little and bring it in. I do like a little clank as it gives the notes a sort of 'bottom' that I find quite satisfying.
  19.
Thanks Ped, but if anything that reinforces my reticence. A sub-eBay Q&A system is no substitute for proper communication. I do appreciate that a lot of work must have gone into this, but I still find myself wondering what's the driver for this proposed change - I have no recollection of a storm of protest from BC Members complaining about the existing system. Is this a done deal? Or is there still time to pull back and think it through again?
Yes it's a done deal but we'll continue to adapt and customise as we go. The driver for change is lack of funds - approximately 4% of current sales throught the site end with the seller donating a few pounds. We also feel that the new format is a big step forwards in usability and clarity. 'Proper communication' can be entered into with the seller, albeit in a clearer, less 'stop messing up my sales thread' and more direct kind of way, which is important as the volume of sales is so high on BC. We feel it'll be less work to look after, easier to see what's for sale and raise some funds to help develop BC, DC (drumchat) and GC (guitarchat). I hope you'll change your mind when you try it. It's impossible to impress everyone, but the benefits for us as a team running this site are huge, and we believe the majority will enjoy the new format and find it clearer and as useful as before. Cheers for the feedback, all ideas will be discussed when it's been going for a while and when we can afford to hire more programmers to add any adaptions we might like.
  20. I've added a couple of demo 'questions' to show how they appear in the associated tab. http://isaaclewis2.invisionzone.com/index.php?/classifieds/item/9-warwick-brand-new-with-case/#questions
  21.
In standard tuning?
DADG actually. Used this since as long as I can remember
  22.
Anyone want these? Couldnt get on with them. You need a 2 a side headstock - wont fit a Fender style. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/190079-fs-%3B-elixir-stainless-bass-string-set-l17-taken-off-a-spector-euro-after-1-months-use/page__fromsearch__1
Too thick for me, I'm a .40-.95 man. That reminds me, actually - I had a quick look earlier and I couldn't actually see my preferred gauge in stainless, but could for the nickels. maybe that was because the retailer didn't have any but not sure.
  23. I've also been using the originals for years; for me they feel brilliant and literally last 6 months at least. Couldn't be happier but also want to try the new ones just out of curiosity. Thanks for the link. I'd be interested to hear how you get in with yours ped
  24.
I'm with Happy Jack on this - the current (old) format with plenty of chat does let you suss out what's what with a lot of sales and, I've felt, gives me more confidence in purchasing e.g. by post which is a real trust thing. This new format seems much too open to gumtree-style scams in comparison
Hi mate You can still comment on the 'questions' tab. Cheers
