I have had the same set of Elixirs on for over a year and they still sound new, and the coasting hasn't come off at all (but I never use a pick and play lightly) - I would give the EB strings a try for fun but they don't seem to make a .040 set? ped

I think separates are the best idea really, though I do like having everything in 'one box' if possible! I wanted to ask what you mean by storing the amp in the cab for touring? If you mean making a 'slot' for the amp to slide into then you may well compromise the sound of the otherwise sealed cabinet (or designed with specifically sized ports). ped

My Marleaux bass also had a zero fret. I think they give more consistency between the fretted and unfretted notes and allow a lower action and overall setup. I like 'em. They do seem to be a European thing, though!
