Gorgeous looking bass - love the subtle body logo, too. Sweet. Enjoy it.

Just made this: http://www.youtube.com/group/basschat Only a prototype at the moment, but hoping we can build up lots of nice bassy videos to the channel. I suppose the way to do it would be for me to tell everyone the password details for logging in and uploading? The formatting on the youtube channel is not much good, I can't move the boxes down the page so the basschat banner shows properly, but it looks OK I guess... ped

Delighted to hear you like the bass - make sure you post some nice bit pictures and sound asap! French basses rule ;0)
-
I like mine being active - 90% of the time I play it passive and with the EQ centred there is no difference in the sound, and it is nice to have a bit of adjustability that I am familiar with when using other amplifiers with which I am not familiar.

The thing with the Vbass and the VB99 is that the processing is much more complex than a typical modeller, in as much as it individually processes each string through a dedicated pickup/preamp system. That's the expensive bit, so making individual pedals with only a few things in them would actually be really expensive and counter productive. Good idea though. I should be getting a VB99 soon to review but I am an avid Vbasser. Going to the studio with it in a couple of weeks so will get some decent recordings and a video up too. Cheers ped
Try fitting a set of Alembic Activators, a set of EMG's or another set of hi-fidelity pickups perhaps one day? It will make the bass even more clear and alive sounding (which is all thanks to the maple construction). The Barts really take the edge off the bass IMO.
Mine was a 4 string so can't comment on the affect on the B string but of all the Bart equipped basses I have had, this was the best. I really like Bart pickups when in the right bass. To my ears it sounded warm, punchy and superbly clean. Isn't the 5er J+J?
-
I had one for a while, it was my first proper bass. I thought it sounded superb, the barts (P+J) really suited the bass and I agree with 4000 on the sound. I have a song I recorded with mine here: http://www.freewebs.com/mrped/facethemusic.htm (the track is Coasting Down Vesuvius (lol)) The only reason I sold it in the end was because I thought the neck was a bit unstable, I seemed to be forever adjusting it, but on reflection I think it was just me working out the fact that I like stupidly low action with no relief, but without the knowledge of that exact fact at the time. All round a great bass, unusual, beautifully made and Mike Pedulla is a nice bloke (and Christine IIRC at Customer Services). I remember paying much less than £1000 for mine but then I did get very lucky and sold/traded it well above the value. P.s apologies for the utterly tasteless and immature track, at the time it was kind of the point!
-
Clang and brightness can be from a very low action and lack of neck relief, so think about adding a bit of height to the strings and introducing a slight bow to the neck so the strings won't clack the frets when you play. Personally I like it low, straight, clanky and clean!

Sorry if I came across as a dick too lads! :0)

Hi Ian, Glad you and the equipment arrived safely and look forward to seeing you around! Cheers ped

BTW if I plug my bass directly into my poweramp my sound remains the same but I don't have the options the Vbass gives me like monitoring or synths.
It recalls me..the likeness between two Metal guitards.... Trey Azagthoth (No it isnt his real name......thats George...) 6/7 string..Hamers,Gibbo's,Ibanez's,uber super heavy..Fast/slow...Death Metal..you name it..has all the bells and whistles, racks and Blackpool illuminati in his rig..the guys really good..VERY good....and his sound tears rendering from a wall.... Trey is always tinkering..and probably will never stop.... Compare this to Trevor Peres...Of Obituary.... Strat,Rat,50w Marshall,4x10......... Guess whos got the nastier tone.....Is the faster setup onstage, easiest to work with, and generally the nicer guy....
Me?
I am feeling calm and reasonable, Ped I haven't threatened anyone or anything, have I? If I have, I'm deeply sorry.
Hmm.. a little aggressive IMO hence Andy's reply and withdrawal from an otherwise interesting discussion. I embrace the digital (I kind of have to with my back!). Correct Andy mine was the newer V4, really nice bit of kit but way too heavy for me nowadays. I shattered a disk in my neck somehow so can't lift much now. My SWR 4x8 is my heaviest cab and is just about bearable! Cheers ped
There's only one way to sort this out... FIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!
I was waiting for this!! A valve amp would win this no problem, it could just fall on the pod!! I reckon I could beat you up though ARGH. Easy as pie.
I'm really sorry Andy, but you are seriously talking rubbish now. I've been playing for over 30 years, have very good ears, had plenty of valve amps, tranny amps, DIs, modelers, etc. I KNOW what my pod can do. Your amp has no presence or headroom either without your cab, so that's a big load of baby balls for a start. The POD f*cked a subwoofer in a pro studio a couple of weeks ago so I know how much air it can push about. The transients are earthshaking through a PA. I'm lucky enough to play in a pro band so I usually have a decent if not superb PA with sound people who know what they're doing. WHY is analogue FAR better than digital? I absolutely DEFY you to tell the difference of an expertly set up POD patch and a DIed SVT in a blind test. You been on the sauce today or something?
Whilst I agree with you on this, maybe you could take a calmer more reasonable approach!
recording demo....not a shop tryout....
I dread to think what my recordings would have sounded like if I didn't already have intimate knowledge of how to work and setup the pod to match my needs. Obviously the engineer wasn't setting it up to your tastes. Not really the pod's fault. Poor old pod. :0( ;0)
NAIL---->HEAD Thats why I didnt like them...No dirt..didnt feel grimey...bit like a G/K rig....a note that moves nowt.
Different strokes :0) I did make a grindy patch called 'SVT grit' which many people, like Walman, liked. I will upload a sample of it EDIT - no I won't, can't find it! these were all recorded with a pod though, except the last one which was direct http://www.freewebs.com/mrped/facethemusic.htm
Ive been connected up to one on a demo, and it sounded sh*te....Great for a studio in a bedroom, but not live...
Hardly surprising. Line6 did themselves a real disservice by loading the pod with terrible over the top presets and you simply cannot expect to get the best out of it by trying one in a shop! Fair play, if you don't like 'em, cool. Maybe you would feel differently if you actually picked one up, tried it with an open mind and gave it a chance, but perhaps you are not that kind of player, which is also of course totally cool! ped
hi ped, stupid bit of argumentation there by me! I know the pod doesn't shift air. however, I have never heard a pod stand up to valve amp ever. I mean, you know, you just simply cant redefine the laws of physics. A DSP, at this very point in time, unless someone finds the solution to infinitive sampling, will never faithfully nor truly recreate an analogue signal but it gives it a bloody good try! Again, not everywhere has a decent pa so the portability issue raises it's head again. I do think though if these things were that good everybody would use one - it is not a futile argument it is just plain fact - if the pod could recreate my rig then does anyone really think I wouldn't walk that route? I'm 42 overweight and unfit!! And yes analogue is far better than digital, just to flame the argument, suggesting other wise is just plain silly! I'm glad you guys all love it so much but it just did not do it for me and I really don't see it as a real solution for bass players! my opinion of course. andy
OK :0) I think the thing about 'everyone would use them' is flawed though - after all not everyone uses a valve head. Maybe they are too expensive? Maybe people don't like IEMs (I know many don't for a fact). Maybe not everyone likes fiddling and messing about (see my post above Alex). As you are comparing it to your amplifier then I can only say that as a preamp, mated to an appropriate power amp, then it is just another option you can choose in terms of powering a speaker. Some love Markbass, some love valves, some love separates - horses for courses. FWIW my valve sound was always super clean and hifi so I can't speak for a grindy valve sound (I feel most of that is due to the valve power section anyway) but as a clean signal producer I found it every bit as good as both the Trace V4 and the Mesa 400+. I always play with a super clean sound with barely any EQ and as a result my bass sounds pretty much the same through anything. It just so happened that the pod also did lots of other jobs, so I kept it, for a while. Having said that, for live use my pod was pretty much bypassed anyway, as is my Vbass. ped
sorry don't see it nor hear it! siddx, my rig shifts enough air to knock you over without going through a 3k rig - can the same be said for the pod? and herein now lies the issue: portability yep great as long as you have a roadie with a van capable of carrying a huge rig! sorry contradiction there is immense! anytime you want to put your pod up against my rig great! as I said been, seen, done, read the book and wore the t-shirt, the pod just did not do it for me! but hey different strokes for different folks! the pod has no headroom nor presence just a set of emulation patches amplified and given I repeat given potential headroom and presence by either a. a pa system or b. a power amp and speaker cab which again contradicts portability! I'm not having a go nor belittling the pod just giving my opinion and experience with them. andy
Hi Andy, Not sure what you mean - of course the pod doesn't shift any air, it has no speaker. I used it as a pre into my V4 for a touch of reverb, as a pre direct to desk, as a AISO driver and audio interface for recording... all sorts. You cannot compare a pod to a bass rig as it is a different thing. I think I know what you are getting at but the advantage of the pod is not only a monitoring solution (where the venue has decent PA) but as a whole host of other things too. Match a pod to a power amp (I have my Vbas into a 1u 800w poweramp) and you essentially have an amp head which is capable of powering any speaker and shifting just as much air as you mention... Like I mentioned, I used mine in all kinds of ways alongside some of the 'best' valve amplifiers in the business and the pod stood up to them in every way weather used live with a poweramp or as one of the many other things it can do which a straight valve head cannot. The Vbass is even better! ped

You certainly have to be a certain type of player to embrace things like the pod. It does take a lot of tweaking and mucking about to get what you want, but some people love that (like me). If you know how to get it, you can get anything you want from the pod. Aside from the whole digital/analogue argument (I can't tell the difference) then there is really no reason to say that it is an inferior piece of equipment to any other solution. To say that 'if it was any good how come everyone doesn't use them' is plainly ridiculous. Some players like simplicity and that is fair enough, but there are amazing options out there for those who like to tweak and fiddle. In all honesty once you have your patches set up and tried them in various settings, it becomes the most simple piece of plug 'n' play equipment out there because one box does it all! Cheers ped

It's the left channel of my stereo... nowhere else to put the speaker. They are too far apart really but my living room is the wrong sort of shape what with the Vdrums in the other corner!

Here is a poor pic of my SWR - a 4x8 and 1x15 from the early 90's. And a Hifi speaker! Really nice gear - fairly light and sounds superb. Job's a good'un
