1. HI Jamie,

There is a bash being planned with Mike @ Bassdirect somewhere around Leamington Spa at the moment. I have however just asked for the contact details for the usual Northampton venue because it seemed a hit with everyone, so I will book it in due course for around March/April time to give everyone plenty of notice....

Does that sound OK with everyone?

    Cheers

its has been my experience that administrators and moderators of forums can ban whoever and whenever they see fit
Not really - well I mean we could but Thumper was banned because of personal issues between him and Kiwi. A shame but I think they have burnt all their bridges now!

  3. I had trouble making the CS3 sound any good without that obvious 'seasick' sound of the compression kicking in. It can be difficult with any compressor and also depends on your bass and playing style, so is hard to give much advice. The only thing I would suggest is to try a Boss LMB3 limiter before the compressor or instead of it - you won't hear any 'seasick' compression because the limiter simply cuts off dynamics over a certain threshold rather than squashing them. I found mine really natural sounding and a godsend on rental rigs with no decent compressor.

  4. I think some people just find it more comfortable because you are essentially moving your finger in the same way every time but moving the hand around instead. There was a thread about it here somewhere recently.

EDIT: here it is - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=floating+thumb - explains it much better than I did!

Details below. The V-Amp Pro is one of the best bits of kit I've ever used (albeit a bit flimsy), so many different, useable tones if you're prepared to spend a bit of time with it.
I agree with you about the Vamp - I have a pod XT Pro and echo your statement about having to spend time with it. Once you are there though, it is an incredible piece of gear.

Basses are custom Sirius headless models.

That looks superb - very unusual but stunning!

  7. The site wouldn't load for me a minute ago but I did not see the IPS error screen, just a blank screen as it tried to load. It looks like the problem might still be there. I will look into it further.

Cheers - any more reports please let me know!

  8. Nice videos, cheers. I hope we see more clips of everyone playing.

Bass sound is very nice, and it looks like you have the floating thumb style down really well - have you always used this technique or is it something you have been developing? As I have never used it I find it really difficult!

  9.
It was a version of the Thumb designed by bassist John Davis which had a shallower body and neck than standard, making it a bit lighter and much easier to play than the standard Thumb. Unfortunately the email I had from Warwick about it has gone in a hard disc crash - I have a vague feeling that the JD was the first Thumb, being a cut-down Streamer, but this may be bollocks. Ah, it might not be bollocks after all.
Cheers, I didn't know that. Big fan of Thumb basses.

  10.
Twice so far. Twenty years ago, after playing it and falling straight in love with it, I traded in the Precision and B2 that I had at the time for the JD Thumb. I've never found another fretted 4-string as playable.

I bought another Thumb and had it defretted and the neck reprofiled to be the same as the JD. I don't count that as finding it because it was quite a change from the original, and when I had flatwounds on it I couldn't quite gel with it, but since fitting roundwounds it's been great.

The second "the ONE" was when I bought the 5-string fretted Antoniotsai. I've been trying to find a 5-string that I really got on with for a long time, probably about 15 years, but the trouble is that they've not come up to the playability of the Thumb, until I got this one. Rather lucky really given that it came from Viet Nam.
Forgive my ignorance but what is a 'JD' Thumb?

  11.
i had the bass overdrive,

Gain, bass, treble, clean/dry mix and level, did exactly what it said on the tin!
Technically not a tin though you bearded waster

  12. Thanks guys! Glad you like it. I am doing a new version of the video soon, this time it will be filmed in DVcam quality with a proper background and my rig will be in shot (though the audio path will probably be the same - XT pro into desk and synced with camera).
