1. It is actually the 'Concord' bass I have shown above, and the stealth I nearly got has long gone now. I was going to buy it through a music shop on Digimart http://www.digimart.net/gk_detail.do?instr...t_id=DS00228327 They have lots of lovely basses!!

  2. Excellent!! Thanks for this thread! I find the Aquilina basses interesting because 1) they are French ;0) and 2) some models have Benedetti pickups.

I really like the Stealth bass too - I came close to buying a Stealth Deluxe from Japan a while back.

    A couple of nice pics:

    One for Dood??

    Innovation!

  3. A request for pics please!! You definitely did get a superb bass in that Smith. I was SO CLOSE to buying it at the bash - if there was a cashpoint I would have done. Glad it has worked out for you, and looking forward to seeing the picz.

  4. To be honest, it keeps him off the streets and is better than anything I could throw together (notice I didn't say 'make') but the fact he went to all that bother but won't go and borrow/buy a cheap little amp, or even play it into his HIFI or SOMETHING so we can hear it is just obviously him avoiding the fact that it doesn't work, electronically or physically - again, not something I would make fun of him for IF HE HADNT PLASTERED IT ALL OVER THE INTERNET!

  5. Aye it does have one or two 'pipes' in there - The good thing being that it never really breaks a sweat. I retubed mine with a matched set from Watford Valves for about £110, so not too bad. The problem is that the tubes you buy must be matched to the fixed bias of the amp. This means choice is limited and expensive. The alternative is a non fixed bias - With my Trace, for example, you can bung in any set of four KT88s (~£50 for a matched quad) and set the bias to match, making it much cheaper..

I am sure there are bebefits to both designs that go way over my head, but my wallet is happy!

  7. Hmm there shouldn't be any visable hot spots on the valves themselves. If you have two speaker outputs then I would reccomend connecting a single cab to each of these rather than daisy chaining them. Ohmage isn't so much of a problem on valve amps and it should drive a 4 or 8 ohm load without any problems, but if your cabs are rated below a total of 4 ohms (i.e 4 ohms each) then you might be sucking too much juice from it. The valves might be running 'hot' because they are not biased properly, too.

Now wait for an expert to be of more help!

  8. I always try and price in a hard case if I am posting the bass. They can be had very cheap and are well worth it for piece of mind. However if you cannot, I find packing the bass into a box (the ones that come with cheap basses inside) with foam blocks at each end and supporting the neck, taped up and surrounded with bubble wrap and slid into another box with the gig bag inside and then padded with more bubble wrap and newspaper is a good idea.

  9.
As for headphones, Grado make some stunningly revealing ones at relatively sensible money*. I use a pair of SR125s as a final check on instrument character and fine tuning. I'd hesitate to use them solely for mixdown, but I think I could still get some fantastic results.

    * the most expensive pair are £900+ though :) Nearer the bottom of the range, the SR80s are about £80. I've heard dozens of headphones and Grados beat the lot. They are an open design, so the sound leakage may be a problem when also using them for monitoring in a quiet recording situation.
EXACTLY what I was going to say! I have some 'cheapo' SR60s and have used them for mixdown alongside monitors and they sound fantastic - of the whole range I found them to sound the most 'natural' sounding.
