1.
Only two major ones...

A '73 jazz, vintage white, black guard, maple bound neck and pearly inlays, had all the ashtrays etc. and was in 9.5/10 condition. It sang like a bird and played like a dream. And I, being still very wet behind the ears and not really thinking about what sounds good ahead of what looks good, part-ex'd it for a Status Energy 5 string.

Part of the reason the Jazz got let go was because I had bought a bass by a company called Lag (who are still around making guitars, though seem to be mass produced). This was a hand-crafted job which came with nothing but a phone number for a little workshop in France somewhere. It was a jazz-ish type bass, though more modern. It had a stunning American black walnut body with Bartolini j-type p-ups and eq. Hardware was all black (with a Warwick alike bridge) and the birds-eye maple neck was capped with about a quarter of an inch of never-seen-before-or-since highly figured rosewood, all marked out with abalone inlays. As amazing as it looked, it sounded even better. Thick bottom end with sizzling everything else.

The Lag met it's demise because the Status convinced me it was all gonna be about 5 strings and, well, because I was stupid so a few months after the Jazz went, so too did the Lag, depressingly for a drum machine, a chorus pedal and a second hand four track.
Hi mate,

Do you have any pics of sound clips of the Lag bass? There is a very 80's red P bass Lag in the PMT near me, and some of my fave fusion players have played Lag basses in the past. And, of course - I like French basses ;0)

  2. Yes it was great to meet you hamster. I was pleased you liked the Carvin, and it was great to hear other people playing it. Maybe it will find a new home soon eh?

    Cheers

  3. One way I cured the him in my 57 reissue P bass was to have a piece of tin foil coming from the pickups to the chrome ashtray cover - that way whenever my hand was on the bass the hum stopped. Not ideal but it didn't bother me afterwards. Part of the problem was using Elixir strings because you are not actually touching the metal of the string quite often, so I would get lots of crackle as my finger connected/disconnected with the string.

  4. The Ashbry was great - I have asked my friend if I can have his uncles so might have one soon. It actually feels pretty natural having it in an 'upright' position, despite the fact it makes you look like you are having a tug, as Trev pointed out.

  5. Superb day - again, massive thanks to David for setting this one up. There was some lovely gear and it was great to see everyone and catch up, and meet some new faces. Gear highlights for me were OBBM's Duck Dunn bass - fantastic sound and a great take on the P design. The Darkstar pickup was great, I will have to check one of these out again. G77's synth madness was brilliant, I thought the bass itself felt and looked excellent and the sounds it made were just stupidly cool. I really liked the Gary Willis Fretless Ibanez too, it felt very much like my own - Luke you did indeed nail the setup.

Me and Luke popped out for a bite to eat and when we came back everyone apart from Nik and Trev had left, but Trev had set up the G77 monster (hmm, is there a connection between those two events?) and the four of us had a brill time chatting and jamming.

I am really sorry I missed you Oxblood and a few others who came earlier, we didn't arrive until about 2.30/3pm - fashionably late.

A thoroughly lovely day indeed. Many thanks for the lift Luke.

By the way kiwi, sort yer' captions out - its a Passion bass, not an Arpege ;0)

  6. I use the super light size Elixirs, with a .125 B for the 5 string. Not to worry though matey, I just got a batch and judging by how long these strings last on my basses I won't be after any more for some time. Cheers anyway mate ;0)

  7. Couldn't disagree more - although I think slap is fun and maybe not appliccable all the time (I much prefer a tight fingerstyle groove) to say that a P bass is not a 'slapping' bass is just mental. There are millions of players who use P type basses and get fantastic slap tone. I understand you have a viewpoint on this and it is not to your personal taste but why force it upon others so aggressively?! Chill.

  8. Use a small bass guitar box which squiers etc come in if possible, they should have polystyrene inserts to support the head, neck and strap button. Pack THAT box into a larger box with plenty of bubble wrap in between. I did this with my Bacchus 24 and also put the soft case in the outer box. Worked a treat.

As per who to use - it is a gamble either way - it depends on the individual in the warehouse. I have always used DHL without any problams.

  9. Stringsdirect are actually a bit cheaper for my Elixir super light sets. I origionally went with them because for some reason stringbusters wasn't remembering my account info, and didn't do 6 string sets I was after when I had my Alembic. I haven't changed since!
