1. Alright Crumpet!

My first proper amplifier was a Laney Hardcore Max HCM60B. Single 12" speaker, think it was only 60w but it was great - really loud and sounded pretty nice to my ears back then. The new Laney tube stuff looks interesting too, especially as it is similar in spec to my Trace Elliot tube stuff. Look forward to trying one - but it does annoy me when companies call their gear MAXXX SUPER HARDCORE etc, kind of pigeon holes them a bit. The Laney valve head just looks a bit too 'metal' for me - and I play in a funk metal band sometimes (I know, I know, funk metal, sorry)

  2. Just goes to show! I get on OK with them and they seem quite knowledgeable folk to a certain extent. The Welsh(?) chap is a nice guy - my friend bought a guitar from there recently and all was well. They do, however, have those hard cases with union jack/newspaper/skull and bones designs available from Thomman for about £35 for £80 odd which isn't on!

  3. I always tried to get a summer job there but to no avail. have you been to the Oxford Guitar Gallery? Mainly guitars there but really nice helpful staff. Really nice shop, worth a visit and a chat! Its in Summertown, next to a really nice Pizzeria.

  4. Matt, you are right, it is kind of an empty feeling too. I used to buy all the magazines and talk with people about what I wanted and what my ideal rig would be etc etc - really good fun. Now though, my setup is very different to what I 'imagined' it might be, and I never buy the mags or go into shops much because they kind of don't interest me as much now!! Same with you Gareth?

  5. Wahey! Although now you have said it, you have jinxed it! I too am really happy, and have found that I have got my 'brand' after a long search, and an expensive one at that. Thing is I nearly bankrupted myself several times, had some close shaves and some long shots but now every time I find myself GASsing for something else I just don't bother (as much as possible) because I remember how lucky I am and that I will end up shifting the item on anyway in time!

You are right though, superb gear and a lovely place to be. Enjoy it and focus on the music - I really find it helps when you are comfortable with your gear!

  6. They are a lovely bunch for sure. I am near Oxford and went there for some help with Ableton Live, they were only too happy to set theirs all up and talk me through it all. I bought my first and second ever basses from them and they are always helpful and cheerful which makes a change.

  7. I have settings on my line 6 XT pro for this kind of sound, and they shape up really well in the studio and live. I found some valve pedals to be a bit too fuzzy sounding, whereas I wanted a more clanky subtle grind. Here is a short and shabby sample of one setting. This one beefs up really nicely through the PA. The nice thing is with the pod you have so much control over the sound, you can really create whatever you want if you have the patience!

  8. Quite a difficult situation to be in mate. As my own combo weighs about 100ib, I thought I would get one of these: http://www.primrose-london.co.uk/truck-bes...there-p-17.html I remember trying one whilst helping a friend move house ages ago and it really did cope with stairs well. Having just had a mega operation on my back I will not be buying one any time soon, but Kiwi is I think, so maybe he will be kind enough to do us a review.
