60’s vs 70’s jazz bass pickup spacing / position - SAME BASS !!!
ped replied to Bart Funk Bass's topic in General Discussion
It must be said that the clips aren't particularly well recorded - a limiter is needed big time... but the woody bark from a 70s spacing is clearly the winner 🤣 Maybe it's because I listened to a lot of Marcus Miller as an impressionable teen That's weird - my computer autocorrected MARCUS MILLER to all caps!?!- 57 replies

Just idle curiosity but who makes a super compact pedal that takes a battery? As mentioned elsewhere I love my EWS Stormy Bass Drive - it’s tiny, very clever and sounds amazing. I wish EWS did a bigger range of effects but I started looking for other manufacturers who offer compact designs just out of interest (I don’t need any!) One Control do a range of mostly guitar distortions although their filter pedal apparently works well on bass. Mooer and the like all make tiny pedals which require a power supply (and say ‘it’s so small there’s no room for a battery’ (well, EWS manage it…)) As an aside it always amuses me that Darkglass say they don’t allow battery operation for ‘environmental reasons’ - which kind of smacks of the same thinking that brought us the advert showing a man buying a Britta Water Filter jug (plastic, plastic filter) to reduce his plastic waste!! I suppose I like battery option because live I like to keep things really simple, and as my pedals get used infrequently and are mostly analogue I find they last ages. Something about the gadgety nature of it being self contained also appeals, I think. So do you know of any? By ‘compact’ I’m referring to 1590a size, smaller than a Phase 90

Always preferred 70s myself. Lots of people say there’s no difference believe it or not, or say that you can EQ them to sound the same 😔- 57 replies

I’m still really taken with my Stormy Bass Drive. It’s tiny, takes a battery and doubles the voltage internally yet uses very little power, has a super useful set of controls and it sounds exactly like I wanted it to. Huge range from a light bit of grit through to glitchy fuzz sounds. It’s just super cool. Although it’s ‘ended’ my search for a bass distortion, I kind of admit that it’s opened my mind to how much fun a good one is and I’ve bought others since but none have been as ‘right’ as my stormy!

I can't remember where I got mine from but it's a decent, solid single adapter that fits really tightly. Much better than the one that comes with, and than the cheap ones you se eon eBay. I think it was from Sainsburys actually. Thinking about it, it's a 2 pin to UK adapter, nit a US plug

Jamming through headphones with digital drums is amazing. You get a properly ‘produced’ stereo sound and can get the levels perfect. I find it a really comfortable way to jam, especially with a physical feedback device like a Bassboard or Backbeat. I actually prefer it to a ‘loud’ jam with big amps and acoustic drums tbh.

Runs on batteries too!!
-
Yep that would be perfect. I also jam with my band though headphones and have tried loads of bodges to get it to work. Last time we used a Jamhub which was great, but I’m replacing that with a Zoom L8 which will do everything in one, including recording.
-
Yup, avoid those headphone splitters too as they’re quite noisy.

Yes I saw there was a YT video covering the issue, but wondered if there's an update and if there's any particular UK slant on the issue.

Slightly OT but I've also just asked Elixir what the deal is with their supply problem
-
@MoJoKe said Promenade Music are able to get them in - might be worth asking?
-
How are your strings holding up @DylanB and @NancyJohnson et al? I’m tempted to try them as like most people I can’t find elixirs anywhere.
-
They're great - nice pics, too.

Hi folks I'm experimenting with a new feature which shows no ads to people in the Supporting Member group. Regular members will see no change, and guests/not logged in will see more. Cheers ped

That’s why you compiled a list of every bass you’ve ever owned - perfect for forcing on people at parties: ”wow, that’s crazy! You want to hear something else weird? See that Yamaha BB over there?….”

I’m noticing weight more than I used to. I had a disk replaced in my neck a while back and have a dodgy lower back (thanks Mesa Boogie) so I think I’m more sensitive to how a bass hangs or sits than the weight as such. SB1 is 8.8lb and feels very comfortable; the playing position and way it wraps around me. The Celinder is a tad heavier but it feels so slick and has a thinner body so it melts away. The Stingray is a slab, a bit heavier again (but very light by pre EB slab body samtandards), and the playing position feels great - it wouldn’t be as comfortable if the pickup/thumb rest was further forward for example. The Vigier is very light and ergonomically perfect; that or I’ve moulded around it over the years!!

This is very true. I originally tried mounting severed heads from previous server admin/moderator staff onto my bass but couldn’t get them to stay in place -
Hm try another adapter. Mine came with one and it was really flimsy, kind of made the plug itself hang a bit loose. I couldn't get the light to go green. Replaced that with a decent one which really 'snaps' onto the US plug and all fine.
-
Doesn't sound right... make sure the charger is working, because I found mine didn't like some US/UK adapters. The light should go green when charging and go out when full. Full charge I think should be around 3.5hrs of rumbling and it should definitely rumble the aux in. I wonder if you got a dodgy one?

I’ll have a look for you. I reckon someone was banned and their IP was blacklisted, and that IP covers a range of mobile profiles. -
I had one of those and it was really noisy. I think I sent it back.
