Hi all. I'm new to the world of Bass guitars, so please bare with me ! I'm looking to purchase a beginners short scale bass, which is relatively light (I have issues with my left shoulder),and has little neck dive. My budget is £300 maximum, and I wondered if any of you can kindly recommend a bass within this price range.....? The two guitars I am interested in at the present time are as follows: Epiphone Viola Epiphone EB-0 (I could possibly stretch to the EB-3). I am open to other suggestions though ? For your information, I will mainly be playing Beatles covers. Many thanks.
My son is selling his Squier VM Jaguar SS. Only had it 6 months, nearly mint. Drop a PM if interested!!

Help me spend some 'credit' on a cab / stack around £500
Pembo replied to danthevan's topic in Amps and Cabs
Horses for courses, really. You'd have to play them to see if you like the tone. Personally, i'd go for TC stuff over Ashdown. Unless looking at the top end ABM Ashdown stuff, then the MAG stuff can sound a bit loose/wooly. The TC stuff, certainly in that price bracket, is tighter sounding. it's got a little of it's own colour, as opposed to Markbass stuff, but it's still controllable. Depends what style of music you play aswell. if you are happy with a basic thumpy tone sitting in the mix, then a MAG115 would be ok. However, if you want a tighter, dynamic tone pushing through, then definately the TC stuff. -

Personally, i'd be looking to get a new amp head aswell, and would struggle to replace both amp and cab in the £500 new area. If you were planning on doing that, then this looks about the best option http://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-combos/pid18527/cid687/tc-electronic-bg500-210-bass-guitar-amp-combo.asp If you only want to replace the cab, then personally i'd go for http://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-cabs/pid15534/cid686/tc-electronic-rebel-stack-rs212-2x12-bass-cab.asp Obviously you'd have much better options going the 2nd hand route... -
You too could have one.... Love the tone of it though.

Personally, I prefer that both live and recorded are very similair. One of my pet hates is seeing bands live that sound nothing like their recordings. One of my favourite local bands sound fantastic recorded, but cannot replicate the dynamics, overlayed harmonies, doubled up basslines, etc, live.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8jPDdHd9y8 This is the album that made me wonder "What is that thick, thumpy, bendy tone?" when I was about 10.

Check out stuff by The Band, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Ryan Adams, Flying Burrito Brothers, The Eagles, Son Volt, Gram Parsons, The Jayhawks...

I used to have a Takamine EG512C. I put some TI Flats on it and it sounded lovely. Almost like a double bass on times. Was hesitant about using it live due to fears of feedback, but didn't get any. Great bass for noodling at home on aswell.

Hollyoaks is where it's at for new music! Period.

Heard it this evening in the background, missus loves her Hollyoaks!! Great stuff. I thought it was Explosions in the Sky/Mogwai/This Will Destroy You, upon first hearing. Right up my street... -
I'd say the BB's sound "rounder", definitely with less growl than a good P bass. So might be right up your street. I guess it's coming down to small details here, and you need to try and compare some.
Sweet. Sounds like the BB would be for me. I'd prefer a tighter/rounded tone. I don't play any rock/metal/punk, etc, so if i did need a bit more growl/dirt at any time then i could dial some in with extra gain or a pedal, i guess. -
I like the Yammy BB's but the P pickup on them is a bit "gentler" and "rounder" in tone than on a Fender P, and due to the size of them they are next to impossible to replace. So, IMO, the BB will not give you an exact Precision tone, although it is sort of close. On the other hand a Yamaha RBX270 gives a spot on, cracking Precision punch. I have one as my main bass these days, and the J pickup on it is really very good too. The pickup and body wood upgrades over the RBX170 put the 270 in a different league. I have tried more than one very expensive P pickup in the Yam and it is no improvement to my ears on the original. Thoroughly recommended. I think there's a new B-stock one on ebay at £199, although new they are only a bit over £200. Play one and you will be impressed.
Would you say the BB pickup has a lightly compressed tone compared to the p bass? If so, I think I would like that. I mainly play blues, folk, country/americana styles of music, so looking for that thud, without any growl as such. I'll have to try the RBX270, but i know I don't like the look of it aesthetically. I don't like bass's that are pointy looking and the 270 has pointy headstock and body leading to strap button. -
About five years ago you could buy these basses new for £200 , so the seller might not be losing that much in the scheme of things .
I suppose so. Especially if the seller had little insight/dedication to playing bass and originally bought it as a 'hobby to try'.
Ona different but related note, strangely I seem to be having far, far more luck selling bass stuff on Gumtree recently than anywhere else (including here).
Yeah, I've noticed an increase in listings on Gumtree over the past 6 months.
Stop worrying about some imaginary elusive tone. Set the EQ flat. Get on with it. Worrying about tone is a distraction from playing music.
....Nail....head.... So wish i could live with that concept, because i think it's smack on. Unfortunately, I keep thinking that if another human being could achieve 'THAT' tone, then so can I.

I know. was weighing up the petrol cost from Newport, Wales to Essex. Got busy doing stuff, forgot about it, then gutted.

Squier VM Jag Special (pj config) V's Squier P Bass Special (pj config)
Pembo replied to Pembo's topic in Bass Guitars
Gone off the Jag idea a bit and looking at a good Squier P or Yam BB, now. Only got about £200 max to play with (holiday next month...!). Currently watching a couple of BB414's on feebay, so hoping i can get a well looked after one for sub £200. -
What about these? http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/TC_Rebel_112_cab.html Haven't used one myself, but heard they are decent and very portable.

Wondering which would give the more authentic sound and better build quality.
