My car stereo doesn't play WAV either, according to the destruction book (I found it lurking in the glove compartment, not bad for a 6 year old car I bought a year ago!). Last time I ripped an MP3 from youtube, it worked, but left my computer feeling very poorly, so I won't be going there again!

Garageband doesn't seem to do that, running short of time so I paid my five quid and triedCD burn pro - not many user options, which suits me as I don't know what I'm doing, but I was able to start with the FLACs and end up with playable CDs, they definitely sound better in the car than the MP3 version did. Mind you, took three CDs to get the whole gig on!

Good point, I'll see if garage band does that, used to have audacity on windows but used to the mac now

Yeah, I did that and there's so many conflicting answers that I thought I'd ask here and see what is recommended by the collective mind of Basschat

Hopefully this is the right place to get an answer to a basic question about music file formats. The band I recently joined has sent me some FLAC files from our recent gig, taken direct from the digital PA mixer the venue used. I can't play them on my Mac, so they also sent me MP3 versions. I would like to have a decent copy of the gig on CD so I can play it my car without the bother of bits of wire and phone getting in the way. I tried burning the FLAC files to CD, which worked but won't play, my car's CD player isn't that clever. The MP3s work on a CD in the car, but I would like to be able to listen to the best possible quality as I already have the files on my computer. So I think my question is 'what is the best app to use to convert FLAC files to audio CD with minimal loss of quality, that will run on a Mac. Thanks in advance, Dave

I've been playing for 45 years, but I'd have to pick up a bass and watch what my fingers are doing to be able to say anything about my 'technique'. My fingers go where my fingers go, that's all I can say.

All dreadfully familiar. Before I moved to Finland in the mid 90s, I spent 15 or more years living in West London, so when I moved back to the UK (my native Oxford this time), I was amused to answer an ad on JMB for a bass player for a blues band, supposedly accomplished, experienced, plenty of bookings, etc, in Uxbridge. Well...band leader was a serial guitar buyer who simply had no idea how to play (I attended 3 or 4 rehearsals...ended up having to tune his guitar for him). Lead guitar guy was pleasant and reasonably good, but just got a lift to the rehearsal rooms and played whatever the BL brought along for him from his collection. I had to tune them, as well. Drummer was a decent bloke, but had to take a few days away from rehearsals ( no gigs booked at this stage) for family matters, so BL decided to get in a dep. Except he hadn't told the pro drummer who stood in what the deal was...nor had he told the original drummer. Played 3 or 4 songs during which the drummer and myself were struggling to control our mirth as the BL launched into unrecognisable versions of well-known blues songs... then the drummer packed up, told them thy were wasting his time, that none of them had a clue about music...except the bass player, he added. BL through a fit, threatened drummer with all manner of physical violence...and I never went back. Did several gigs withe drummer in other bands later though, and was once in a music shop in Oxford when I heard my name, turned, and there was the talentless BL in the process of buying yet another guitar or six. He insisted on showing me how they did certain songs now...exactly as they had been a year or two earlier. He still had to watch his fingers and carefully put each one in place for every chord. I left, rapidly. A few days later I had an email from him with a link to some video of a gig he'd done...it was completely unwatchable and unlistenable. Good idea this thread, it's very cathartic and I suspect that just about every gigging player will have similar tales to tell.

Not as bad as drummers who set up and leave cases all over my gear!

Simple answer, I'd have thought, Blue, he either has to get them or get replaced. Being able to contact someone on a band is as important as them having decent chops and their own gear.

One band I'm in has given up rehearsals, we use gigs to learn new songs!

That was great. I never watch videos, but I had my headphones on and was totally captivated by this all the way through. Jack Casady! Brilliant!!

Reminds of a couple of my students when I was a college teacher in Finland. Two girls showed up late and the worse for wear for a class, and their excuse was that my classes started too early. I pointed out that this class started at two pm, and that they shouldn't show up to class with a hangover. One of them kind of looked in my general direction, trying to focus, and slurred out 'We're not hungover, we're still drunk'. I laughed then and still laugh now. Hard to be angry with that logic!!

Just back in from a local gig, only a 20 min drive for me, makes up for last week's 110 mile round trip and the week before's 420 miles. Pub was packed, good crowd, played from half nine until midnight with a 10 min break, they want us back and had enquiries about playing some biker rallies - on of the biker's there turned to be someone I knew from my days at bike rallies (as a biker, not as a muso). Only thing that marred the evening was another eruption of a long simmering row between our guitarist and drummer, which didn't seem to affect the music but whizzed three of us in the band off. The fourth member didn't notice! Any more incidents like that and this band has had it, I think. Guitarist and I are already plying is together with another band, so it won't need to be a big step, but we've all been together a few years now.

I think this is good advice for life in general, not just on a bass forum. Avoid politics and the news and your life will be so much happier!

Thanks again for pointing that out, it's been fixed now. Roger Warner is a musician, so I think they count as a duo, if not a full band. But we're a 4 piece.
