  1. I was just now experimenting with the small rig I used last night to try and get a better sound than I felt I had on stage. At home volume, the best sound (Rootmaster 800, Super Compact, standard Jazz bass) was with the amp EQ switched out of circuit. Actually, the sound was slightly better with the Sans Amp going into the FX return, but that's another thing to remember to take and plug up.
  2. Tervetuloa! I lived around the Kouvola area for many years before returning to England about 5 years ago.
  3. Wonder if he'd accept an offer for a 1x12 while he's got the saw out...
  4. Funnily enough, there's one for sale on here at the moment, bought in haste and then barely used. You can find it among my posts!
  5. I spent years living in Finland, I can deal with snow, but over here there aren't many snowplows out, and most people don't have winter tyres (we rarely get these conditions) and so it's not your own driving that can be a problem, but other people who can't deal with snow. And then the audience is not likely to be huge either. I had two gigs booked for this weekend, but both have been cancelled.
  6. I had 2 gigs booked this weekend. Tonight's has already been cancelled, waiting to see what happens tomorrow.
  7. Try the 2mm Dunlops, no flex at all. I can't use anything flexible, it throws my timing off. I have some 1.5mm Dunlops and even they are too flexible for me. Like you, I am primarily a finger player.
  8. I don't think I've ever caught myself saying that. Possibly it has escaped my lips when over stimulated by the thought of playing above the 7th fret, but that's unlikely.
  9. Plectra? We aren't ancient Romans, the word has been assimilated into the English language and therefore takes English grammatical forms. Plectrums! Mind you, most people people only use one plectrum at a time. I rarely use them now I've got enough use of my hand to play with a modified finger style, but when I was using them, 2mm was my weapon of choice, couldn't stand the flexing of anything thinner.
  10. There was a whole thread about Dave on here recently. I take all my basses to hime for any work that needs doing. Taking my new Jazz over for a fettle in a week or so. Top bloke is Dave.
  11. I was surprised when I put it on the scales, but it really is a very light bass. Ideal for anyone who suffers from shoulder or back problems with a regular 9-10 lb bass.
  12. I (in a rare spirit of generosity) assume it's because they encounter a lot of customers who have no idea of how to play, and are buying their first instrument, so they demonstrate it for them. The other explanation is that the shop staff are egotistical flip wits, but obviously that could never be true! (I'd like to add here that neither the staff in my nearest PMT, in Oxford, nor the guys in my all-time favourite music shop, WM guitars in Ashburton, Devon, have ever behaved in such a way).
  13. Measured a few, the US headstock is 5/8" thick, the Mexican 9/16", so the MiM are 1/16" thinner (about 1.5mm). I've got several sitting side by side and have never noticed before. I'd have thought a slightly thinner, and therefore lighter. headstock would be a good thing, it is still more than strong enough.
  14. Good idea, I'll go look for a cave to sleep in until real music comes back! Though, of course, the truth is that it has never gone away, it's just not flavour of the month with the people who decide what gets on the radio and television. Or at least, I think so, as I haven't listened to a radio programmer for decades and only occasionally watch any telly.
  15. I suspect the bass will be as popular as the electric Crumhorn in another decade or two. I'll be past caring by then anyway!
  16. I'll have to get a ruler out, I've a selection of Fenders upstairs and haven't even noticed! I didn't think you can still get a US Standard, unless some places still have old stock. and the others are even more expensive
  17. I spent 16 years in Finland. Lows of minus 35 in the winter, highs of plus 35 in the summer. Loved it!
  18. I agree, I needed another Jazz bass and bought a Mexican Standard new a couple of days ago. The cheapest US Jazz in the shop was about 2 1/2 times the price and I didn't feel the difference was worth paying that much for. I suspect that what the OP is seeing is that MiM basses suffer less depression than the US ones at the moment, plus the fact the Roadworns and Classic series are very much in demand. And if anyone would like one, I happen to have one advertised in the for sale section!
  19. I've got both MiM and US Fenders and have never even noticed a difference in the headstock. To save me the effort of going upstairs and comparing them, what exactly is the difference?
  20. I reckon the Rootmaster 800 has more than enough 'heft', 'authority' or whatever. I'd love to be playing through valve amps and 8x10s, but in the real world I have to transport my own gear, and so that isn't going to happen! I tried flats on my Jazz and quickly took them off, but love them on my Precisions! I'm sure a lot of it is our preconceived ideas of what they 'should' sound like, though I must admit that I prefer a wider neck for flats than I do for rounds. I certainly can't get that P bass 'thump' out of a jazz, anymore than I can get those singing Jazz bass mids out of a Precision, it's just that in recent years I haven't played in bands that needed what Jazz can do, and certainly did need the Precision thump. Ultimately, we don't have to pick a side, or decide which end of the playground to stand anymore, and admit that both have their place, depending on what sort of band we're playing with/
  21. Typo caused by trying to do more than one thing at once. I usually struggle to do one thing at once, to be fair.
  22. I had nine until mid January, since then I've sold two and bought one, so the count is going down, but I could do with it going a bit faster!
