Probably balsa wood then.
No, it was a much harder wood than balsa! Model ship builders use all sorts of exotic hardwoods and it is available in small strips, perfect for the OP's project. Unless he gets sidetracked into a long term build of the Cutty Sark!
-
I did this a few years ago and used a light-coloured wood from a model shop. I can't remember what type of wood it was, but it worked well and was easy to see against the dark fingerboard. I think it was intended for model ship makers.

What would you do- a hypothetical quandary?
If I was going to collect and was going to pay cash, I'd be disappointed if it was sold to someone else. I'd say it's sold when a timed appointment to meet is also a point when it's sold.
Yes, good point, in many cases, especially when buying or selling here, then a definite 'I'll have it' can be taken as a sale agreed. I have accepted sales and purchases on that basis and never had a moment's trouble. I was still at least half asleep when I wrote my previous post! -

Until money has changed hands, the item is still for sale in my book. Expressing an interest, discussing collection/meeting/posting, etc. are not a commitment to buying. Only a deposit or full payment means a sale. -
My Super Twin (#001!) has been with me for four years and well over 100 gigs, and still looks like new. I just use a Roqsolid cover to keep it clean (I bought it before BF were offering covers).
I may just do that myself! Since starting this thread 3 weeks ago I have pretty much settled on the idea of an upgrade to 'One Cab To Rule Them All', in the form of a single 4-ohm cab that will play nicely with my 800W Demeter or 900W Streamliner, whilst still producing a healthy output from my recently acquired Nano Mark 300 (when used as a backup in case of main amp failure). I started drawing up a comparative list of what's available, and Barefaced have no fewer than 3 contenders in their current range, of which the Super Twin seems the best fit for me. The other contenders come from Bergantino, TKS, and Vanderkley, but all but TKS have tweeters, which add little for someone who favours a smoother sound, plays flats exclusively, and can't hear anything above 12kHz! Sadly there is now nowhere in the UK to audition a TKS 2126 or S2126, whereas Barefaced can be had on sale or return. So Alex, what is the lead time on a Super Twin (with grille cloth) at the moment?
Graeme, if you haven't seen/heard my Super Twin or Super Compact yet, they are all I use now, so will be onstage at any Wirebirds gig Dave

I love Sunday afternoon gigs, but we don't get to pay them very often. Having people keen enough to call the venue to make sure you're paying there is very cool!

I've not played it enough to make a reasonable comparison with the Thunderbird, and the EB4 is away being set up my taste right now so I can't remind myself. I think it was fairly similar to my 'bird, but then I often switch between Jazz and Precision basses without really noticing the neck difference! Sound is similar to the T bird, lot of punch and bottom end, but more versatile due to the coil tap switches (push pull on the volume control). I found it felt very natural in my hands when I got it. I played a complete gig with it just a few hours after it arrived!
Yes, it will be told once we sure there is no truth in her reporting us to the police! All I can say at this stage is that if anyone is offered a gig around Melksham it might be worth checking with me that you're about to play the gig you'll never forget, for all the wrong reasons!!
yeah Blue they sure have been used on a lot of gigs. I think they came out in the early 90s? I need to buy one. FinnDave that sounds awesome , the second gig that is Man you work hard, 3 hours with 15 mins break? wow that is impressive.
We were exorcising the demons from friday night's gig! Last night they were still calling for more but we simply couldn't play any longer! It was a slow load out and I only unloaded the heavy stuff this morning.

We had great gig last night (Saturday) at a village pub in Buckinghamshire. Our first time there, but unlikely to be our last! Went down a storm, played 3 hours in 2 sets with a 15 min break and they still wanted more! Bonus for me was that a bunch of my biker mates that I've not seen for a while came along and were really enthusiastic. I use my Epi Thunderbird, Rootmaster 800 head into Barefaced Super Compact, a good punchy set up that takes up very little space. Last night was a welcome contrast to the night before, where we played to an almost empty pub on the edge of a town in Wiltshire and the landlady was trying to pick a fight with the band!

Scratches, "Dings" and imperfections..
FinnDave replied to SimonEdward's topic in General Discussion
I had no idea my words had so much influence! I was gigging my Epiphone Thunderbird last night (classic iv pro, with Babicz bridge and Gotoh tuners) and it felt and sounded as good as anything I've played and better than most. The EB4 is with a local guitar tech for a proper set up, looking forward to getting it back! I have made sure I rotate through my Fenders when I play at home, just to stop them feeling neglected! I usually take a Jazz or a Precision as back to gigs, but haven't played one live since I got my first Thunderbird. -
My go to Thunderbird has a good few marks and dings. I bought it with 99% of them on (amazingly absent from the pics). It doesn't bother me as it means I can just use it without worrying about it. I have come very close recently to buying an EB4, and may well still do, but I would worry about gigging it for fear of damaging it. So I fear it could become a bit of a show princess.
I gigged my EB4 a few hours after receiving it, I can't get too precious about what are simply tools to achieve an end. -
All four string fretted, couple of Gibsons, mostly Fenders.
-
I just find I'm 'there' as soon as the first note rings out, my preparation is mainly practical stuff like making sure I have the right gear with me and know how to get to the venue. I think the setting up on stage focuses my mind on the gig as well, once the set up's complete, I can't wait to get started.
-
I used an Ashdown Touring 330 combo, which was about 300w into a 15" speaker (plus a horn, I think) and it was great for pub gigs, sound wise. I found it a bot heavy to load in and out of the car, though (due to a wrist injury) so moved it on in favour of a small Barefaced cab and Rootmaster head.
Pah! That's nothing! I've played to zero people. Literally. There were no punters at all, so both the bar staff went outside for a fag. There was no one at all in the entire pub except the band. We just kept playing ...
That's happened to me too, there was a big event on in town and no one came to the gig. We played both sets, the landlord apologised, said he'd enjoyed it (sat outside in the evening sun!), paid us in full and rebooked us!
-
My aim is two gigs each weekend, but I rarely achieve it. Any more than that and it becomes an exercise in humping gear in and out the cars and the pubs we play in, with a lot of driving on busy roads between. As an example, I am playing tonight in Melksham, that's about an hour and half away for me but half an hour less for the others, and tomorrow night a village up near Bicester, only about 40 mins drive for me, but add another 30 mins for the rest of the band coming from Swindon. We have done back to back gigs, slept in the cars between gigs, etc, but none of us is getting any younger and the bodies start to object to that kind of living.
Yes, me! We`ve been together for 4 years now and I have got the band one gig (earlier this year).
Good for you, Lozz, I hope there are plenty more. I walked away from another band this year when I found that they expected me to find and book gigs for them, almost as if it is an automatic extension of the bass player's duties! BTW, been playing the black n maple Precision all day today, all good but feels and sounds a bit tame after my recent months of playing only Gibsons! -

FinnDave replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
Is anyone here in a band in which responsibility for getting gigs and making sure everyone knows about them is not the bass player's job? Are there similar threads to this on guitar chat, drum chat, sing chat and keys chat? I often get the feeling that being organised always needs a bass player! My band has played 140 gigs over the last 4 years. Left to their own devices, I doubt that they'd have managed to get 14! -
Making sure all voices are heard in an internal chat group
FinnDave replied to Stylon Pilson's topic in General Discussion
We use a private group on Facebook which is only visible to the four of us. However, one member rarely looks at it, nor does he read SMS on his phone, so the only way os to phone and talk to him....if he answers! Sounds tricky but we manage to get along fine and work around any difficulties we may have. -
The only fair way is first come first served, I don't think my wife would be happy if I overruled a friend's wedding or a weekend away with a gig booked after.
I book all the gigs, so if we had a family event arranged, I simply wouldn't be looking to book that date. Though I honestly can't remember the last time we had a family event to attend, we have only my two daughters, who are both adults, no older relatives left. Can't remember the last time I was invited to a friend's (or relative's) wedding, these things simply don't happen in my life.
