I got shot of my ABM 600 purely because I have trouble carrying heavy gear since an accident damaged my right hand a couple of years ago. The ABM sounded great!
-
I've just sold my ABM 600 as the RM 800 evo does everything I need and is smaller and lighter. I suspect the non evo is closer to the ABM than the evo, but I never compared the three of them back to back. I prefer a more aggressive sound, so the RM evo suits me best. My current plan is to sell my ABM 500 evo 2 and rootmaster 800 and just have a couple of rm 800 evos. But that's just the way I play, might not suit everyone.
Are there any tonal differences between those two?
The evo is much more aggressive, which suits my style of playing and the bands I play with. In fact, I will be selling the non evo root master to replace it with another evo when I can afford to.
Ssshhhh!!!! It's a pretty well kept secret how good these are and the reason you can pick them up new for £599.
I don't think any of the doubters will believe me! I've seen the natural finish ones selling for 599, but I preferred the sunburst for 50 quid more. Still a quality US made bass with decent hardware at Fender Mex prices.
Very hard to paint numbers on nits...
A very fine brush and a good magnifier works well.

If you don't like the look of the 2017 model, play one with your eyes closed. I guarantee the feel and sound will win you over! I've got 4 fenders, another Gibson and a couple of Epiphones, and nothing I have comes close to the EB4 for attack, punch and clarity. Those little passing notes and runs we all do that can't be heard come over crystal clear.
-
Yeah, I was well pleased at how it turned out, but it's a high risk way of choosing a new instrument, especially as I didn't really need one!
-
I've just tried and the EB 4 is a good fit in a standard Hiscox Fender case, so I don't need to buy & store another case. Result!
I love mine! Got a natural IV. They've taken a little bit of stick for the Tobias body shape with a batwing headstock, but looks ain't everything. They sound huge and the neck is a treat to play, IMHO. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. The fact that you used it for the complete gig and the T'Bird stayed in the case....
Just had a message from our drummer saying this is his favourite bass in terms of loss and sound. I'm listening right now to a recording of last night's gig and the bass sound is excellent, not too loud but very clear and defined. Lovely and growly, too!
-
I took along to tonight's gig (Marlborough, Wiltshire) with the intention it using for a few numbers and then reverting to my trusty Thunderbird. In reality, the Thunderbird never left its case, I played the EB4 for the whole gig. Great sound, fast neck, versatile...I'll be using this one a lot. All I have done since I got it (less than six hours before the gig started) is tune it. I am sure a careful set up will make it even better.

Well, it arrived, and it sounds great! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/311935-nbd-gibson-eb4/

Well, this just turned up! The result of this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/311904-a-dangerous-combination/ And I have to say it is a real beaut, both pickups have coil taps (push-pull on the relevant volume control) and the whole thing is just quality. Light, too. Lovely growl down at the business end. I'll play some or all of the first set at tonight's gig with it, I reckon it'll sound even better through the 2x12 with the amp wound up a bit.
Isn't that the Nordic equivalent of Aldi and Lidl?
If only that were true, I'd have a lot less problems with money!

Corrected! Who on earth put the S next to the D on my keyboard?
-
when your name is John Smith, it becomes difficult
I'm familiar with that problem! But not many [s]S[/s]Daves who lived in Finland. I've been using the name FinnDave from sometime in the late 90s onwards. I moved there in '96, so it was obviously after that!

Thanks for that link, those look just fine. Good point about the neoprene/cellulose issue though, two of my basses are cellulose finish. I could probably avoid the problem with a small sleeve of cloth over the rubber.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but it's probably better than starting another one! After a serious attempt to cut down on the amount of basses I have, my collection has grown from 5 at the turn of the year to 8 (4 in, one out). My usual method of storing them is in hard cases stacked up wherever I find room, but that is becoming impractical. So, I am considering wall hangers and empty cases in the loft with a maybe two cases left downstairs for gigs. My question is which wall hangers are preferred? I see Hercules mentioned a lot, and do have a two bass Hercules stand but lost faith in it when it fell over at a gig and tipped my jazz bass into the drum kit! My basses are a mixture of Fenders, Thunderbirds, Casady semi-acoustic and an EB4 due to arrive today.
I can feel your anticipation for tonight's gig. I hope it goes well for you. Even if the bass doesn't get to you in time, I am looking forward to your NBD photos.
Cheers, It'll be a Gibson gig either way as I'll take my Thunderbird whether the EB arrives or not.
Good work. I've always loved the look of the EB3 and fancy I'd play/sound just like Andy Frazer if I had one.
The EB4 is a completely different animal, long scale, different shaped body, seems to have been around a few years but not caught on. I searched on this forum and got zero hits (maybe I'm just no good at searching!). Looks like this, but mine should be in sunburst: http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2017/USA/EB-Bass-4-String.aspx

My attempt to cut back on the number of basses I own is not going to plan!
-
Is that the black one that was on the various Facebook bass selling groups??
No it's a sunburst new from a shop.
-
I was suffering from the temptations of a dangerous combination of boredom, too much alcohol, the internet, and a credit card last night. The rest of this is arriving tomorrow in the form of a brand new Gibson EB 4 bass. Two humbuckers, Babizc bridge & a full scale set neck for the price of a Mexican P bass has to be good value. If it arrives on time, I'll gig it tomorrow night!

Bands you don't like with members you do like
FinnDave replied to ZilchWoolham's topic in General Discussion
Slightly inspired by the overrated bands thread. Do you ever remain unimpressed by a band even though you really quite like one, or several, of its individual members? Personally, I think Brian May is a terrific guitar player, but Queen never manages to move me. His tone is great, and his solos are exciting and ear-catching, but the songs they're trapped in always leave me cold. It's almost a bit frustrating!
Agree with that, Brian May is great but wasted on that band. Then again, without Queen he might never have been heard of. Just a bloke in a pub band with an incredible guitarist. -
