1.
Simply Red for sure. Also (puts on Nomex suit) ...Yes. Pretentious, over-long twaddle *runs away*.
I always though Yes were pretentious crap, and still do. And as for Chris Squire's bass playing....well!
2. Strangely enough, I quite enjoyed that! They looked like they were having fun, too.
3. Mine was great through a Barefaced Super Twin (2 x 12). Rootmaster 800 sounds pretty awesome through it too!
4. At least 90% of what gets played on TV or the radio.
5.
I just found out that Donald Dunn wasn't actually a duck.
If you believe that, you must be quackers.
6. I'm planning to order a bridge from them, but refuse to order it until it has arrived.
7. Be realistic, Graeme, most of us have a few loose screws on this forum!
8. I am the original and still current owner of Super Twin serial number 001. It still brings a warm glow to my nether regions when I play through it. In fact, I used at last night's gig, with an Ashdown Rootmaster 800 and Gibbo T Bird. Best bass sound I have ever had. I'll probably leave it to my daughters as a family heirloom! The only cab I have bought since getting this one 4 years ago is the recent purchase of a Super Compact for those small gigs where the ST would be too big.
9. On the few occasions it has happened I have questioned it with the payer and been told it's a bonus for doing a good job.
10. We had a gig at a newish venue in Swindon. Decent place, but not really established as a music venue, so the audience was quite small. Bit disappointing compared to last week's Swindon gig, which was great. Oh well. Marlborough next week.
11. Don't know about teachers round here, but welcome to Witney. There's a well-supported open blues jam on the last Sunday afternoon of each month at Fat Lil's on Corn Street which is a good place to meet people and have a play if you fancy it. I'm in OX29, bur most of our gigs are in Swindon (which is where I'm playing again tonight!)
12. I just sold my ABM 600, not because I was unhappy with the sound (far from it) but because I can only comfortably use lightweight gear due to an injury. I still have an ABM 500 (until it sells).
13. I usually record all rehearsals and gigs then share them with the band. Helps us to improve by learning from our mistakes, and some of us use the recordings to play along to between gigs to keep us fresh. Also very useful to a record of those times when when come up with something new, saves us trying to remember what we did when we next play! I use a little Yamaha pocketrax, about the size of a phone and great sound quality.
14.
I know what you mean, their stuff is emotionally overwhelming. Not so much listened-to as experienced. Which is what music is, or should be.
Yeah, I can only listen to a few songs of theirs at a time, it just gets too much after a while. Background music it certainly isn't!
15.
Absolutely, and the tour-de-force that is Tago Mago.
I thought of that, but not sure I can listen to that in daylight! Vitamin C had with sitting here with tears in my eyes. Playing it again right now. I went to see them in Manchester in the 70s, but the gig was cancelled because Irmin Schmidtt had injured his arm carrying some sort of domestic equipment down stairs (I think it was a fridge!)
16. How sad, I still listen to Can fairly regularly, great band and his bass playing was such an essential part of the sound. Loved his solo albums as well. That's Holger and Jaki gone now. I'll have a listen to Ege Bamyasi in his memory right now.
17.
Nice to hear I'm not the only guy getting home from a gig at 3:00 and 4:00 in the morning. Blue
I'm usually home by two, that was a late gig and a long drive home!
18.
Is it still possible to break a string if its 1) stretched during fitting and 2) not 10 years old?
I broke a string during a gig recently, as far as I can remember that was the first time it's ever happened to me. The string broke when the bass fell (with its stand) into the drums during a break between sets. The G string was severed by a cymbal. Earlier at the same gig, my amp had failed (it has since been replaced by the manufacturer). So my spare bass & my spare amp were required that night!
19.
Has harp man considered learning to play water bells?
I'll suggest it....
20.
I'm starting to think we have more of a car culture here in the States. The only people I know that don't own cars live in NYC. Without a car I wouldn't be able to buy groceries or even get to a doctor appointment. Again age is a factor and location. From the responses it seems like public transport is easier in the UK only if you reside in one of the larger metro areas. Blue
Blue, there's big difference between people who live in London and have good public transport and few places to park, and the rest of country. Outside of the big cities, you really need a car.
21.
They're breakable..? They're not drummers, they're bar stewards.
I've yet to discover anything a drummer can't break...
22.
Just for clarity's sake, I own an Epiphone Thunderbird hardcase - I bought it for my Hamer FBIV and it fits like a glove, but (more importantly), Gibson Thunderbirds do not fit into it as the body shape is different.
I'll have to try that, I have both, with their manufacturers' cases, right here. I hadn't realised they were different!
