2. I've had this versatile combo for several years, but our small house is crammed with other gear that I use more than this, so it needs a new home. Good straightforward bass combo, 180 watts into a 12" speaker, great for rehearsals or smallish gigs. No cover with this one, and difficult to post, so collection or meet up only. Nothing wrong with this one at all, good condition, has been in regular use for band rehearsals and I last used it for a gig a week ago. Clear punchy tone with any bass I've played through it. Welcome to try it out in West Oxfordshire.
3. This great sounding combo is still for sale. Perfect for small to medium sized gigs, lovely sound, but to much for my injured to lift unaided unfortunately. Anyone with two working hands would have not trouble at all with this, but since my accident, I struggle to lift anything heavier than a mug of tea with my right hand. I even drink beer left handed now!
4. Ah, Steve from Portsmouth, I saw you play with CH at Radstock near Faringdon maybe two years ago?? I came over the to the festival just to see Rob & the guys, as we weren't playing until later in the evening. Great band, but only managed one gig with them so far this year.
5. I have two Barefaced cabs, the deciding factor for me would be the fact that you can discuss the cab you want with the designer very easily, they are just down the road in Sussex. The other make I have never tried, have no idea where they are from, in fact I know nothing about them, but they would have to very very good to be any better than Barefaced. I have the first production Super Twin, so it is getting on for 4 years old now, been gigged many times in those years, still looks like new, still sounds incredible.
6. We're all different (small cry of "I'm not different" from the back...). I have two gigs to play today, and will be taking my Epi T Bird as main bass, with a Fender P as back up. Completely different styles of bass, but either will do the job. I do think the T Bird is about 100 times more interesting to look at, though!
7. We used to have a singer who'd ask us to move a song up or down 'half a semitone'. I bought a fretless just to prove the point!
8. I've been using my ACS Pro 17s for 4 years now, and after several gigs where I was playing close to the PA (lack of space) I changed the filters to 20db cut. Cost 40 or 50 quid from ACS, arrived the following morning, took me 2 minutes to change them, feel much more comfortable with them now. I did experience the remoteness when I first started using earplugs, but I soon got over that, and being to hear the rest of the band properly even after two hours plus on stage is a real improvement, especially as a lot of our songs tend to go off piste at times!
9.
The only problem with that approach, is that you're potentially limiting the amps that you can use & may miss out on the one with the killer tone.
Why? Just make sure your cab(s) are up to the job.
10.
Well, then I guess you are lucky it doesn't affect you.
Guess I am. Been playing 45 years and it's never been an issue.
11. I still don't get it, I switch between Jazz and Precisions, Thunderbirds and an Epiphany Jack Casady and yes, they're all different, but I've never seen that as a problem, anymore than single or two pick ups.
12. I'll be sticking to my Barefaced cabs with amps outputting approx 50% of their theoretical power handling. I haven't been aware of any problems with that approach.
13.
That could potentially rule out the majority of amps.
I'd have thought it was the majority of cabs, at least if they're used alone.
14. To be honest, Bill. I've never even heard of the 'myth of under powering', though as you describe it as a myth, I won't bother looking it up! I started playing in the 70s, when the accepted standard was a cab rated at double the potential output of the amp. I have learnt to accept a smaller safely margin than that over the years, but would never plug a cab into an amp capable of delivering more power than the cab could handle.
15. No, I accept that I may the odd one out, but in all my years of playing bass, neck width has never been an issue. I am currently playing Thunderbirds and haven't even considered the width of the neck.
16. Personally, I would never plug an amp into a cab with a potentially higher output than the cab could handle. Any accidental tweaking of the volume knob could be catastrophic.
17.
Just doesn't feel as nice to me, maybe it's my inexperience but the 38mm spacing seems to suit me better. The precision works fine it's just not my 'go to' bass and the spacing is part of that.
I often play a Precision at gigs, and change to a Jazz in the break, I am far too concerned about getting the sound right to even think about the spacing. My fingers just seem to find the strings anyway. It really has never been any kind of an issue, I am rather surprised that some people are bothered by it.
18. They're all 4 string basses, what difference does a few mm in neck width really matter?
19. Quite honestly, I have Fender Jazz and Precision basses, and Epiphone and Gibson Thunderbirds and really do not notice the difference in neck width between any of them.
20. The regression from rock to blues jazz is an interesting theory until you remember that both rock and jazz evolved out of blues.
21. We played 5-6 this afternoon at a benefit gig in Swindon. Were told the backline was provided, which turned out to be wrong, Luckily, the guitarist had his amp in the car, and I had asked the harp man to bring my Ashdown EB 180 combo as I am planning to sell it, but it came in handy today! The band after us was a bit late so we kept going with increasing 'out there' material. Seemed to go down well, guess they were all as crazy as us!
22. My school didn't approve of first names, just initials and the surname. Which was unfortunate for young master Peter Uddle.
23. I don't think any bass can ever look as cool as a Thunderbird!
