1. Actually, I suspect groupies do their home work, study the band, and learn about the shows as well, but they have a different definition of a successful result! Seriously, though, what you say must be the best way to get invited to join a band you feel you'd be a good fit in, and sound advice, even if most people refuse to accept that, and refer to rely on luck.
2.
Don't think you will be disappointed Dave
I'll be very surprised if I have reason to be! My Super Twin has been my constant companion at gigs since I bought it, and it was the first one off the 'production line'. Just physically a bit big for some of the more 'intimate' venues we play. Tonight will be a Super Twin night!
3.
You got me Dave. I admit I am a bit of a brand snob. Every bass I own is a major brand. It stems from playing so many knock offs as a teen when I couldn't afford a name brand bass. Blue
I probably am a bit as well - I've got shot of the few Squier basses I had and my Precision and Jazz basses are all Fenders, 75% of them US models (the other one is a Classic 60s Jazz made in Mexico), not really because I care what people think, but I because I always wanted them when I was a kid, and also they have proven themselves to be completely reliable, and require less frequent adjustments than the cheaper clones. Probably down to better wood, better fittings, and better quality control.
4.
Great choice Dave. The Gibson is a completely different bass than the Epiphone. The Gibson is the superior bass IMO. Blue
The Gibbo was for sale on here, OK, a bit more than an Epiphone, but then I'd have to have bought a case and now I won't be plagued with thoughts of 'This is all very god but a Gibson would be even better'! I will take a close look at the new Epi T bird when it hits the shops, though, a back up is always useful...and at least I'll have something good to compare it to. I own and often gig an Epiphone Jack Casady bass, so I am not a brand snob, the Gibbo is just a breathtakingly beautiful bass, to my eyes (and sounds bloody good to my ears, as well. Damn thing even smells good!)
5. The only truly dreadful neck-dive bass I have owned was a Guild B301, bought new in the late 70s. I had tried in the shop for ages (it was an expensive purchase for me then) but was sitting down....didn't discover the problem until I went to rehearsal that night. Too late by then. Why on earth I bought that when I could have had a perfectly good Fender for the same money, I'll never know. Just trying to be different , I expect. My Thunderbird stays put hands off, no balance problems at all. Quite excited about the prospect of gigging it tonight!
6. I hope a 112 is up to the job, i've recently ordered a Super Compact to use as an alternative to my Super Twin at smaller gigs.
7. It's a Gibson, second had but in exceptionally good condition.
8. I never really think about which fingers go where, I just play. My little finger does have a good hard patch, so I must be using it quite a bit.
9.
I'll try and drop into the Bell tonight and have a look (and listen) Regards, Doug
Great stuff, come and say hello. I'm easy to find!
10. Believe me, you won't regret it! I bought it because it looks so good, but the sound was a real surprise!
11. Bought Rhysyjob's Gibson Thunderbird from him today. I've always wanted a Thunderbird, and have nearly bought an Epiphanyseveral times, but always held off as I just knew I'd sell it later for a Gibson, but they're are usually a bit expensive for me. So this absolutely perfect 5 year old bass was too good a chance to pass up. Thunderbirds obviously look incredible, nothing looks as good in my opinion, but I hadn't realised until I got home and plugged it in how good they sound! This one will be a keeper for sure, and will be getting its feet wet at its first gig tonight. Obligatory picture below. I'll try to get some of me playing at our gig tonight (or tomorrow's) and post later.
12. Just got this home and plugged it in - what a sound! I am an instant convert, looks and sound - beautiful, beautiful bass!
13. I met Rhys at a motorway service station today to buy his Gibson Thunderbird. He had described it as being in very good condition, and he certainly wasn't wrong! Absolutely immaculate, a thing of beauty. A top rate bass from a top rate bass chatter, I can thoroughly recommend dealing with Rhys.
14. Just returned from my lovely new Thunderbird - my first - and I tried it in a strap as soon as I got through the door. It just hung there, no head dive, and I had deliberately chosen to use a plastic backed Fender strap, to minimum friction to hold it up. The bass also happens to look and sound amazing, can't believe I've waited so long to get my hands on one, but glad I didn't wit any longer! The T Bird will be gigged tonight!
15. We had a gig cancelled after the venue got in touch a week or two before the event and asked whether we would need any electricity....when I explained that if they wanted to her anything more than drums, we would, it became too much trouble for them! If venues as what we need, I usually tell them some room, at least one 13 amp power outlet, and an audience.
16. Come to think of it, there's a whole list of band names in that lot!
17. I don't want no one drawing on my new bass!
18. I think my next band will be 'The Invisible Bears'!
19.
What we need to do is get some basses, some string, a plumb line and black marker pen and start hanging them up and drawing lines on them. Work out the centre of gravity of various basses and then compare that with the positions of the strap buttons. You know, scientifical-like.
I suspect you can still get hanged for that kinda thinking round these parts.
20.
Twelve semitones. Somewhere over the Rainbow. Sorry if I caused offence, wasn't intended.
No offence caused, far from it, but sometimes I remember the power of a google search!
21.
Yep, that's what I do. Just use a 5-string set with roughly the same gauge E,A,and D as I'd use on a standard 4, then chuck the G!
That's good enough for me! Though if I'm already struggling just writing about it, it doesn't bode well for the playing!
22. I am having to think about stringing a bass BEAD as I will need a few notes below bottom E in a new project I've been asked to join. Re-write as even I couldn't make head or tail of what I meant! Take two...if re-stringing a bass from EADG to BEAD, is it necessary to go down a step in the gauge of the strings, or would the bottom four of a five string set with EAD the same weight as currently strung be OK? I'm actually planning to simple buy the B string and move the others over. Obviously, a bit of nut filing is likely to be needed, any reason not to do this?
23.
Rehearsals is where the band should be aquainting themselves with all the foibles of the other musicians.....
Anyone who tries acquainting themselves with my foibles without buying me a drink first is likely to get a slap around the head!
24.
That was not very nice from her. I mean, was she capable of taking it up the Octave ?
Further comments from me are likely to be harmful to my health!
25.
If several band members need to come in in the right place, do they need to queue for a cue?
It would be even worse if the gig was in a snooker club...
