1. I currently have a spare of everything except my cab. I am considering how to achieve that at the moment.
2. Cheers, Blue, the only damage that bass seems to have sustained are a few small dents in the fingerboard between 2nd and 3rd frets where the strings were pressed against it when it fell. I changed the G string which had a deep cut in it from the edge of a cymbal and played the entire gig on it the next night, mainly to show the band the bass was OK! And yes, taking spare bass and spare amp head is a minor hassle, but having a bass fail for any reason (and my case proves it's not just technical failure that can happen) or an amp go...or even both on one gig...is a much bigger pain in the arse/ass. I do have a DI box in my gig bag, but it takes longer to set that up in the event of a problem than to change the amp over.
3.
They have also taken Haz's playing into account with the Studio / Live mixing.....the bass really cuts through now
I must try and listen to 'Into the Woods' before the gig! Just talking with an old friend I'm going to see next week who has turned down the chance to interview Brocky while I'm there!!!
4. Saw Haz play with them last year, and he definitely takes then back to their roots. Good solid bass playing. I'm also seeing them at the Roundhouse next week
5.
Dave, You had issues with your bass and amp at the same gig? Blue
Yes, amp failed early in first song, and the bass fell over and damaged fingerboard and string. I had and used spare amp and spare bass. I've just been listening to my recording of the gig ready to upload and it sounds fine. I did edit out the false start, as we had to stop about on minute into the first number while I changed amps.
6.
Nice! I would bet no one that comes to our shows would know who Duck Dunn is. Blue
I was surprised, to say the least. Surprised and very flattered!
7.
Is that because there's not a lot really that can go wrong with a passive bass? My bass is active, but has the option to switch to passive if something did go wrong with the circuit.
As I have said, my new, passive Fender Jazz was rendered unplayable half way through a gig last week as it, and the stand it was on, fell over and was damaged by a cymbal. Spare bass saved the day. New amp failed on the same gig, spare amp saved the day. A few years ago, drummer failed on the way to a gig (diverted to hospital), my right foot beating out 4 to the bar on the wooden stage saved the day! The moral is obvious, always bring a backup of everything, especially the drummer!
8. I had to switch from fingers to pick last year (due to a hand injury) and found I had to lengthen the straps at least 6 inches to be comfortable.
9. The chance of one of these red ones arriving here to keep the gold top company is pretty damn high!
10. Thank you for the info, I still need a string as I now have a set of three brand new Chromes...so it's either a new string or buy a three string bass! A second look in my odds and ends drawer showed me how tired I was yesterday, as the unused sets there are round wounds, not flats. I'll have a search around to see where I can find a single string at a reasonable price. Cheers!
11. Well, do I ever feel stupid! After getting a full set of strings so I could change the G on my Jazz for last night's gig (mainly because I wanted to have my most recent memory of it a happy one and not the sight of it falling over!) I started to tidy away things this morning. "Where shall I put the pack of three unused strings?" I thought...not on the shelf with all the used strings I keep 'just in case'....I'll stick then in the drawer with odd bass related bits and pieces....and guess what I found there? TWO unused sets of D'Addario Chromes!! Glad no one will find out how dumb I was yesterday
12. My Jazz bass is now fully strung again, and used for the entire gig we did tonight, but I have 3/4 of a spare set until I buy a .045 G.
13. Just back from a late booked gig in Swindon. The pub seemed unaware that the original band had cancelled and been replaced, still had their posters up and told any punters who asked about us the wrong name. Those enthusiastic enough to talk to us were given business cards, though, so they know who we are. Small but enthusiastic audience, possibly caused by Eurovision being on TV, also a party at the club behind the pub and a packed Weatherspoons opposite with beer less than half the price of the pub we played in. We weren't allowed off without a couple of encores, so we were appreciated. Short break until Tuesday now.
14. I started using ACS earplugs 3 or 4 years ago, as the band I had joined had a very loud drummer. I'm still with them and gig regularly, and have very little ringing in my ears after a gig. The others are getting increasing hearing problems but still mock my decision to use ear protection.
15. Might be worth talking with ACS to see if they can come up with an alternative. They are based in Banbury and are very approachable. Not too long a drive from Tamworth.
16. I am so tempted by this, but I if it really has a narrower nut, that MIGHT put me off. I pay Jazz basses, but prefer my Precisions and JCB. The chunky neck is an integral part of the character of these basses for me.
17. I seriously considering chopping in my Barefaced Super Twin for two of their 1x12 cabs, simply to provide greater redundancy. It's such a lovely cab, though, (and carries serial number 001) that I might just buy another and get a bigger car! I do carry a Sansamp in case of amp failure as well. Needed it once, last year, at the venue we are playing at tonight.
18. Yes, it has a little more character and a couple of scars that will be forever Watchfield! First blood for the Jazz, it was brand new a year ago so it's done well.
19. I had left the bass on its stand for the tween sets break, and walked a couple of steps away to talk with someone, so my back was to the bass. The guy I was talking with alerted me but I was too late to catch the bass and stand as they fell into the drum kit. G string took the brunt of it and was nearly severed. Minor dents in fingerboard where the strings were forced into contact wit it, but only the G was damaged. Played the rest of the gig with a Precision I had as backup.
20. Thanks, I actually looked through that page without seeing the string I need before I posted here! Need more sleep
21. I'm starting a shopping list... 1) spare cab 2) bigger car to carry two cabs 3) spare car in case new bigger car fails to start 4) clone of self in case I break down (again!) 5) spare drummer, spare guitarist, spare vocalist 6) spare venue 7) spare audience 8) spare planet I think that covers most eventualities!
22. I've checked my Jazz bass after last night's tumble which destroyed the G string of a new set of D'Addario Chromes. I have a full set being delivered this evening, and will change the G ready for tonight's gig, but would like to source a single replacement so I have a complete set of new strings ready for a restring in the future. Where's the best place to get one (assuming D'Addario actually do them individually)? I looked on strings direct and D'Addario's own site, but my head is a bit fuzzy due to lack of sleep (it'll be even worse after tonight's gig!). Cheers, and TIA.
23.
Can i be honest. Ive listened to it without a beer, and its not as good. There called beer headphones.. Erics guitar playing is annoying. I will stand by Mono's bass playing though.
Confession is good for the soul! My only listening to it was stone cold sober this morning, I appreciate their ability but they don't seem to be playing together really. The bass player is astonishingly good, and astonishingly patient with the rather random guitar work1
24.
There's no way I would ever have used an amp straight out of the box for a gig, same as I never would have left a bass on a stand unattended. Just asking for trouble.
I had tested the amp at home with the shop staff guy who brought it over, it worked fine. It didn't fail until the gig started. I reckon to got nervous. I have left many basses on stands at gigs between sets I never move far away from them in case of inquisitive fingers, there was no one near the bass when it fell. Unfortunately, I was just one step too far away to catch it. I'll change the G string as it was nearly severed and the set was almost new, the dents in the (made) fingerboard are minor, so I hope to be playing it again at tonight's gig. The shop is dropping off a set of strings when they bring back the shop demo amp for me this evening. If this carries on, we'll start using it in our advertising....come and see what the bass player will break tonight!
25. If I start taking a spare cab to gigs I'll need a bigger car, and I only changed from hatchback to estate this year because of gigs!
