1.
Oo-er, we're getting dangerously close to saying that body wood has a bearing on tone!
But that's.......something I won't get drawn into discussing!
2.
Maybe you should charge more for sex then Dave
I might have to, I'm not sure she's got any sixpences left.
3.
So is the consensus that the US ones are the more preferred choice? Ta Mike
Not necessarily, my MiM Precision is perfectly good bass, it sounds different to the US Precisions, but not worse, just a slightly different sound.
4. My band has only done one wedding gig (as a 'funky psychedelic blues rock' outfit, we don't often get asked to do them!) and charged the same as we charge for a pub gig. We played two sets of an hour or so each, plus encores, and everyone was happy. I am surprised to read that bands can charge four times what we did and still get the gig, I'm obviously at the wrong end of the market here.
5. The gig every time! In fact, I'd take an average pub gig over steamy sex any time. It lasts longer and pays better!
6. I have three Fender Precisions. The two US Standards (one 2012, one 2015) sound very similar when using the same type of strings, though one has a rosewood fingerboard and the other a maple one. The third one is a recent MiM standard, also maple, which sounds fine but different to the US Standards. I had a quarter pounder pick up fitted to bring it closer to the US sound, and though it now sounds quite a bit better than it did, it is still different to the US standards.
7.
I love driving home from gigs around 2:00 in the morning listening to our late night talk radio. Blue
I always drive home in complete silence, with the music of the night still playing in my head.
8. Yep, bloody good cabs, I have the first one they made sitting about 6 feet from me right now! Owned it from new, and even though I've not used it for the 8 months, I can't imagine selling it. Hope to use it for some outdoor gigs in the summer.
9. There were two threads about the same thing starts by the same person at one stage, not sure which one this is but maybe you posted in the other one. Or if this is the other one, you posted in the first one, also known as the other other one. I think.
10. I got my driving licence when I was 18 (a mere 4 decades ago!) primarily so I could transport my bass and amp etc to and from gigs. The secondary reason was also fulfilled, as it is much easier to entertain young ladies of an evening if you have your own wheels I recently changed from a perfectly good hatchback to an estate simply to make loading my gear in and out easier. Until recently, if it wasn't for playing in bands, I would have happily made do with a bike and no car. Our drummer has no car (or even a licence to drive one) and relies on the goodwill of the guitarist to drive him to and from rehearsal and gigs, and on the goodwill of the harp man to store and transport his drum kit. Should either of these two decide they don't want to be lumbered with him or his kit, the band would be stuffed, so its fortunate that we are basically a friendly crowd. If we ever needed to replace him (dreadful thought, he is a good drummer and great bloke to be with), someone with a car would be essential. I don't know any other drummers (or anyone who plays in a band) who doesn't drive and own a suitable vehicle.
11.
You need to get on with the drummer and live near him or her. Drummers always drive.
Ours doesn't.
12.
Legend indeed. He had a good run and left his mark.
He did indeed, on both counts.
13.
If you've ever played a gig when you're feeling poorly, you'll know the amazing thing that is 'Dr Gig'. I felt really bad for some gigs, but when I get up to play, it all seems to fall away. However, those minutes just after the gig is finished are a real crash back into illness
Oh yes, I know that one! Played a couple of gigs two years ago a week after fairly major surgery, felt crap before the gig, felt even more crap afterwards, but still sailed through the gig, then did it again 2 days later!
14. I'll ask my doctor if I can get gigs on prescription!
15. The Wirebirds played in a venue new to us last night, and despite getting phoned by the place on my way there to tell us that they were experiencing a power cut that was expected t last for two hours, in the event it was restored before we arrived, and the gig went very well. Probably the easiest load in-out I have had, my car was parked right by the door to the pub! Good crowd, including a few people who have seen us before and came along to see us again, and we were asked to re-book. Home by half twelve and in bed just after one, a good night. A friend managed to really capture the spirit of the band with this picture last night:
16. Both my Jazz bases have flats on them (Chromes), I find it gets rid of the twangyness, which is a good thing from my point of view.
17. Most of my basses now have Chromes on them, though the two that haven't are both Precisions, strung with D'Addario round wounds. I'll probably move them to Chromes as well eventually. Great strings, I wasn't keen on them as a finger style player but now I have to use a pick (hand injury), they are perfect.
18.
I'd genuinely ask them what let each song is in, then just play riot notes to get you through.
I know what you mean, but I do like the idea of playing riot notes! (Preferably in the correct let signature, of course!)
19. Having had my right hand badly broken in an accident 15 months ago, and now back to playing 2-3 hour gigs, I would agree wth the above, seek medical advice at the earliest opportunity, if you just carry on you could be making things worse.
20. I eat something fairly light about an hour before leaving for a gig, often an omelet and rice, or similar. I'm off the booze at the moment anyway, but rarely drink at gigs, as I have to drive there and back, and play well rather than thinking I'm playing well, and for me, those things don't really mix with alcohol. I used to have a couple of whiskies when I got home, but not at the moment. Can't remember ever wanting food when I get home from a gig.
21. Anther vote for Ashdown, sound great through my Barefaced cab.
