'Twas ever thus. I don't like black - or sunburst since the tort went crap - but am perfectly happy with white.
But you've still got to have a tort guard with white. It won't play in tune if you don't.
-
What's wrong with black, white, and sunburst? I have five basses, all Fender, 3 are black, one is white and one is sunburst. I'm fine with the new colours!

The Wirebirds play Funky Psychedelic Blues Rock. And some other stuff.

We used to start with 'Hound Dog' when we had Jenny singing with us, she'd do the first bar solo which always caught people's attention as she has one hell of a voice. Now we use a slightly funkified version of the blues standard 'Going Down'.

Absolutely do not do it, chances of that being genuine are very small.

I've just put a set of 45-100 Chromes on the jazz, as I had them lying around. If I get on with them and like the sound I may invest in a heavier set, I usually use 50-105 rounds on everything.

Meet up with Lozz today, at the same services we used to swap my Jazz for his Precision two months ago, this time I bought my Jazz back! Thank you for being such a good custodian of my bass, and for letting me have it back without laughing!
-
Well, I seem to have gone full circle, as my black n maple US standard jazz is back with me. Bought it back off Lozz today, and determined to try to achieve the mellow, full, and 'fruity' tone I heard last week from a Jazz strung with flats. I don't like the feel of flats, so that might be a challenge, but I've strung one of my Precisions with a set of Chromes to try (again) to get used to them. So, the real question has to be...what herbs go best with a diet of words, as it seems I need to eat a few!

Best laugh I've had for ages reading these replies. The best humour always seems to come from bad news, weird that.

Ordered on line yesterday afternoon and delivered by my post lady just now! That's great service. Just got to sort an amp out and try it. -
I know of one customer who swears by his blob of blue-tac. Others usea small piece of Low Profile Dual Lock (SJ4570). The microsuction tape works for lots of people too. It all depends on the the surface of your bass. If none of the above then a 'belt pack adapter' is the way to go.
I'm happy with a lo-tech solution like a lump of blue tack, if just hanging there is likely to cause problems. Either way, can't wait to be cable free by the next gig! -

If your experience is anything like mine last night, you'll be well impressed! -

I'm seriously considering a sub low-fi blob of blu-tac to dampen vibration. -
Mine is mainly plugged into a P and has been since I bought it a year or so ago, no issues to report as yet, if it bothers you, get the associated adapter and a short patch lead and clip it to your strap. I do that when using my Yamahas.
Thanks, that's all I need to know. I didn't bother me last night, but I only played 7 numbers, but if it isn't a problem in a full gig, then that's fine. -

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I just got off the phone asking our guitarist (I genuinely respect his opinion, he's certainly not a guitard!) what he thought of the one I used last night and he said go for it, so I have. Order placed! -

Right, I have now read the entire 10 pages of this thread, and can't find any complaints about them, and the company reposes here is a definite plus. One question remains, though. Last night we swapped the tx between Roger's Jazz bass and my Precision (I rarely use my one remaining Jazz at the moment) and used them with the unit just hanging there, no magic tape or anything. Is this likely to cause problems long term, as in wear on the jack socket? To clarify, when I say 'just hanging there', it was in fact pointing up towards the bridge, but the unit was not flush with the body, so using something to stick it in place would need a spacer. Just wondering before I commit the credit card! -

Cheers, Rushbo, I am so tempted by this, my first experience of wireless bass was a magical moment. The 'buy now' page on smooth hound is open, just need to accept the opening of 150 quid! Timing not too great as I'm swapping my current car (and a bike of cash) for a newer model today. But the liberation from cables getting round my feet, having to clean them after gigs, the freedom to move around...damn, now I'm talking myself into it again! -

I just got in from an open mic/jam thing in swindon where I was playing with two bands, but using the amp of the 'house' bass man, a thoroughly decent bloke named Roger. I played though his Ashdown rig (I'm all ashdown myself) but he also kindly offered to let me use his Smooth Hound wireless as well. Now I have never used a wireless connection for my bass before, and after a few minutes of feeling slightly naked without a lead, the freedom of movement, and the lack of cable tangled around my feet was a revelation. I am so very very tempted, but before I commit purchase, are there any drawbacks with this I should know about? Roger had a lovely tone from his Jazz bass strung with flat woulds, two things I have tried and rejected, but his tone was clear, rich and 'fruity', it was quite an evening for being exposed to new ideas! -
Each and every one of the "Dick's Picks" series of live recordings of the Grateful Dead does it for me, all 36 of them.

Crowd pleasers - the perfect set list from a punters point of view
FinnDave replied to T-Bay's topic in General Discussion
I had never heard, or heard of, 'Sex on Fire' until about 3 months when I was briefly in a band that had it on their set list. I thought it was turgid drivel, both the original and their version of it. I quit the band before it reached the gigging stage. -
January is always slow for us, but we had two bookings, played one and the other was cancelled by the venue as they were closing for a few weeks because the brewery had scheduled some building work. I drove past yesterday and that certainly seemed to be the case. Got 2 or 3 in Feb, then March/April we're out most weekends, but then nothing until a block in September. I expect the gaps will fill out soon, this is a looking a lot better than last year was at this stage, we had one booking and I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it after my accident. I think we did two gigs before the end of July last year, but still ended up earning slightly more than the year before.
-
Not at all, Phil, I thought my initial reply was a bit snooty (was having a bad weekend, no gigs!) but my second answer was sincere. Thank you for your comments on the Wirebirds, I certainly miss Jenny's voice on songs like 'Move Over' and 'White Rabbit' but she didn't really get on with the bulk of our set. Most people who saw us in the Jenny era and more recently say we are more fun now. She has turned up at a gig or two if she is in the are and guested on a couple of songs, which is great, and we have jammed with her and Stephe Honde (Hollywood Monsters) which was a blast. Our gigs are all listed on Lemonrock, this time of the year I hope to adding a few more soon. The only times we have played around Reading so far has been our annual trip to the St Helena Association sports day (August bank holiday), as we have strong connections with that island - guitarist and drummer are both from there, and the firebird is their national bird! I'm off to play somewhere north of Swindon this afternoon, supposedly a rehearsal but usually mostly tea and chat, but they're a lot of fun and it's worth it for that. Plus the pleasure of playing with a guitarist who did a stint with Van Morrison, and a drummer who I just clicked with the moment we first played together.

Great footage of Can on OGWT from 1975, Irwin Schmidt committing all sorts of violence on his keboards while wearing a waistcoat made of ring pulls, the rest of the band looking slightly puzzled, while Jaki L. just keeps on drumming. Sadly, Schmidt broke his leg soon after this, resulting in their UK tour being cancelled. I had a ticket to see them in Manchester.
