1. Well, I've been reading this thread as it developed, and it doesn't make for happy reading. But I'm just back from playing to a decent sized audience in a Swindon pub, and plenty of them were under 30 and very keen to hear the band, They stayed for the whole gig, too, so I am a bit less depressed by this discussion now.
2. I had two or more of these in the 80s and don't remember any neck dive. I would have noticed, as I was careful to avoid a re-learning the lesson of my Guild B301 which was VERY neck heavy. I bought a Thunder 1 on here 3 or 4 years ago for £100, kept it a few months then re-sold it for what I paid, nice enough basses in their day and when money was tight, but it wasn't up to the standard of the Fenders I use now.
3.
Sounds like an awful idea IMHO - even if it's confined to one forum, I'm pretty sure it would lower the tone of the place overall.
I'm all in favour of a lower tone, we are bass players, after all.
4.
Probably more right the first time...............
I was thinking of the other bloke
5.
You may well be right there Dave
Glad I changed 'some dodgy geezer' to 'someone' in my post now!
6. In my experience, the best way to get a good Precision is to buy a Jazz bass, wait about 10 months, then meet someone in a motorway service station who has a Precision and swap with them. Worked for me , twice!
7. We've used lemon rock for the last couple of years, had a couple of gigs out of it and a few people I've spoken to gigs have come along because they saw us advertised there, but I'd hoped for more for £39 a year. I expect we'll carry on with it, though it seems to be going through some of makeover at the moment and it's harder to find things. Lemonrock link in sig.
8.
That depends how much you liked my original joke.
Just gave it the kiss of life as it seemed to have fallen amongst philistines
9. Surely an automatic has to be the best car for shifting gear, all other cars require you to do it yourself.
10. I recently put a Seymour Duncan quarter pounder in a mex Precision, sounds much better than it did with the standard pick up, but not as good as a US Standard.
11.
Not really the point he was making.. everyone else provides stuff needed to gig with.. I've seen friends bands where the singer rocks up late with just an sm58:-)
We used to have a singer who'd rock up late and you'd be lucky if she remembered where she'd stashed the lyrics, own mic? Not a chance!
12. I can fit a Barefaced 2x12 and an Ashdown ABM 500 in the boot of my standard Astra hatchback, with up to 4 basses in hard cases on the back seat (possibly more than four, but that's all I had to hand). Still leaves front passenger seat vacant for more gear, or singer.
13. I find that Jazz bass pick ups can get in the way with a pick, plus using the bridge pick up results in a very trebly sound, nothing like it sounds finger style. I am playing precisions exclusively since my injury.
14. I switched to pick last year after 40 years of finger style due to a hand injury, and the quality of the sound from my Precisions was a real eye-opener. Rich and full with real punch.
15. Wish I'd thought of that, definite improvement!
16. I really don't have the energy to be a bigot, so I settle for being a little ot instead.
17. Really? Who gives a dying duck what he thinks, especially as he will say anything to cause controversy, as that will get his name back on page 7 of the tabloids.
18. I doubt that I could name one single 'top 20' band from the last 30 years, just not my sort of music, never has been.
19.
Those are the accounts they let their Dad see !
Damn, never thought of that.
20.
Anyone who works in a role with some responsibility and whose name is easily available to the public (teachers, doctors, police officers, professional librarians in national libraries, etc.) has to be very careful what details they allow online. Not a single teacher I know has a Facebook account in their own name...and it's not their bosses they're avoiding.
I know two teachers, and both have Facebook accounts in their own names. They are both my daughters!
21.
I used to be on there, people enjoyed pictures of morris minor engine parts, they didn't 'like' them but I'm sure they must have loved it, who doesn't enjoy a cylinder head?
I would, my first two cars were Morris Travellers.
22.
There's a place for everything , I love playing alternate versions but my main band does it's best to recreate 80s songs as best we can, I enjoy that process and the performing , and so do the crowds we play to.
Fair point, and one I know that the tribute bands exploit very successfully. Personally, I prefer to never play anything the same way twice.
23. Can't see the point of 'sounding like the original'. Might as well just play a record. Live music should bring something new even to such over-used songs like Mustang Sally.
