Been using mine for about 3 years now, and remember the 'remoteness' for the first handful of gigs, it soon passes and the earplug level becomes normal.

[/quote] So do I, but I also use them when riding my bike, so sometimes I get caught at a gig with the plugs at home in the pocket of my bike jacket. Not ridden his year, so the problem hasn't arisen.

I might give that a try, I've still got a set or two of Chromes hanging about somewhere.

No, it's a fair point, but I have already swapped my US Jazz bass for a Precision!

When I was young and stupid (as opposed to old and stupid, as I am now) all I wanted was a Fender Precision. I now have three and can't see any reason to change to a different bass.

We (mrs & myself) often holiday in Boulmer, great part of the world but a long old drive from down here! I'm a plectrum player too, though not by choice, but getting used to it and do like the clear sound it makes.

I have to confess that this is the second time I have met a Basschatter at a motorway service station and swapped a Jazz Bass I had bought 6-8 months earlier (and even from the same shop!) for a Precision of similar age! The first was 3 years ago, and I still own and gig the Precision I got. Having played Lozz's Precision with my band this evening, I can say this will be a long term keeper as well.

[/quote] It may be heresy to say so, but in my opinion, the role of bass is to support, underpin, the rest of the band, not to cut through. That is certainly the case for the sort of music I have always played.

Nope, my US Jazz is going today, and being replaced with another Precision. I have no desire to complicate things with preamps and other electronic wizardry, I like to just plug in and play, life's too short to fiddle with preamps or effects. I need to remember that just because a bass sounds great in the shop, it doesn't mean it'll work with the type of bands I play in.

[/quote] If you read the whole thing, I take both and offer them a choice, often after playing each of them for a few numbers, and the choice is always Precision. It's not like they are laying down the law (I'd be out of there in a flash of they tried that), but no one ever chooses the Jazz. I reckon Jazz basses sound great when you try them in the shop, but for regular band use, it's the Precision every time.

I reckon he's replying to your question, saying what he wants in the band is you, 'Jaco Pasteurised' (or however he spelt it).

Teles are a great example of the beauty inherent in simplicity.
