I'll try and get along, nice pub that. My band are there the first weekend in December.
I never played there, done a few Wirebirds gigs in Swindon, mostly Old Town or the town centre though. We (The Wirebirds) are back at the Rolleston next February.
-
Starts at nine, Dave Kitching on the skins. Dave asked me to play with them, first time the three of us played together was ten days ago, this will be our second gig.
-
As my extraordinarily informative title suggests, the talented Mr Bob Bowles will be playing with his band at the Sun Inn, Coate, Swindon this coming Saturday. I'm his new bass player, this will be my second gig with them. Come and say hello if you're there.
Whereas I've played a lot of jazz, funk and fusion gigs which have required slap and the Jaco tone also fits great with a funky 16th groove so a Jazz has been perfect in these situations. I agree though, in most situations you probably wouldn't ever need a good slap tone or the rear pickup Jaco tone because the music just doesn't require it. Depends on what music you play really I guess. For example with rock stuff I'd pick a P-Bass over a Jazz.
I suspect you've put your finger on it there, I always feel I *should* have a Jazz bass to use, but in fact the music I have been playing over the years has never really suited them. I'm keen to get rid of stuff I don't use, so will be glad to see them go now I have no reason to keep them. The chance of me changing genre now is very slim indeed! Especially now that I am confined to pick playing only.

I have owned five Ashdown Amps, three of which I have still have and use frequently. Three of them are combos and two use Ashdown cabs. I have never heard/noticed the sound you describe here, so it is not inherent in all Ashdown gear. I was using my Touring 330 combo at last Saturday's gig and the drummer commented several times on how good it sounded.

Now I am genuinely impressed, 21 square feet of lacework must be a lot of work, and can imagine the toll that would have taken on your hands.
I doubt they mime on Jools Holland. Do you really think some bassists are pretending to use a J on TV then secretly using a P? What would be the point?
I really have no idea if they do or not, or why they'd want to, it's just that I automatically distrust anything I see on TV.
-
(overdoing computer mousing, fine lace hand knitting, and competitive slalom kayaking all at the same time) which is why I can only play with a pick.
I don't mean to trivialise what sounds like a nasty condition, but knitting while kayaking is very impressive, and then you were using a computer at the same time! (I have had to adapt to pick-only playing after 40 years of finger style due to a motorcycle accident a year ago, I do sympathise, really)
-
I wouldn't take what you see on TV as evidence of what people actually play, mostly mimed anyway. Personally, I take nothing I see on TV at face value, as a result of spending half my working life in that 'industry'.

Nope, both bands have one guitarist each. I find my P bass does a good job of replacing the lack of rhythm guitar when they go off one their lead breaks (though in one band the guitarist manages to play lead and rhythm simultaneously, and even both at the same time! ). Played with a pick (which is all I can do now) the P has a surprising amount of upper mids in the sound with the tone control on full bypass. This makes it sound like I'm anti Jazz bass, which I'm not, I just struggle to find a use for mine.
-
I agree that Jazz basses are more versatile, but (and this is a serious question) when do you actually get to use the sounds it is capable of? I've never played slap in my life (been playing over 40 years) and I can't imagine a situation in a gigging pub & club band where the rear pickup 'Jaco' sound would be of any use. I bought my Jazzes because of their versatility, but I really haven't found a situation in which it is of any use.

Where are we all playing this weekend...

I'll be bassing with The Bob Bowles Band at the Sun Inn, Swindon, next Saturday. This'll be the second gig with them for me. A few more and I might get to know the songs1 -
So Dave they are so bad that you've got several lying around? I don't own any basses I don't like.
Only two, not several! And they are both up for sale right here on Basschat. And I don't dislike Jazz basses, wouldn't have bought them if I did, but I simply can't find a place to use them where my Precisions wouldn't be doing a better job.
-
Own both. Play both. Use whichever one works best in that particular scenario
I also own two of each, but haven't found a scenario in the last god knows how many years in which the Js work better than the Ps. Which is basically what prompted me to start this thread!

Probably easier to roll of the bottom and low mids from a P bass to get a more Jazz like sound if really needed.
-
It's an idea, but I have always used simple bass direct into amp approach, the last thing I need is more gear to carry around! I think I'd be happy to reduce my bass 'collection' to a couple of Precisions.

Re-advertising my Fender Classic 60s Jazz Bass as I am obviously not a Jazz Bass player. Bought new about 3 years ago, this was my main gigging bass for a year or two, also used in the studio, but I feel more at home with Precision basses. This is the top end Mexican made Jazz bass, finished in nitro (cellulose lacquer), and is essentially a road worn Jazz without the wear. It has picked up a little natural wear, however. Great sound and feel for a Jazz Bass player, this bass comes complete with Fender tweed hard case. Prefer buyer to come to West Oxfordshire to try the bass before buying, but it can be posted/couriered if required. Decision made, Jazz basses for sale. I'm obviously a Precision bass man through and through.
-
I have reluctantly realised that I am simply not a Jazz Bass player, so am offering this lovely black n maple US Standard for sale. I bought this new at the end of March this year from PMT in Oxford. I bought the black scratchplate at the same time, so this will be sold with both the black scratchplate (attached) and the original white one (bagged). Absolutely perfect condition, never gigged or played away from home. Complete with Fender case, and as much of the case candy as I can retrieve from wherever I stashed it! Would consider trades for a Precision bass of similar quality. I would prefer the buyer to come to West Oxfordshire and try it before buying, but can post/courier if required. Any questions, please ask.
Sell the US Standard Jazz on here.
I may well do that.
-
I often feel the P bass rather than hear it, but everyone notices if you stop playing, the entire bottom falls out of the song.
-
Well, having gigged my Precision last night with a new band, all I can say is that once again it sounded perfect, not too prominent but really 'there' in the mix. The drummer commented several times on how good it sounded, and he's been playing in bands for about 45 years. I'm seriously thinking of outing my US jazz (and maybe the classic 60 as well) as I can't stand giving house room to stuff I don't use. Strangely, I don't really have a preference for narrow Jazz necks or chunky Precisions, I just play whatever I pick up. It's all about the sound with a band for me.
-
I tend to use my £150 Ashdown touring 300 combo for gigs instead of my ABM 500/ Barefaced rig as it sounds so good in a band situation. Bloody heavy to lug around though! The Wirebirds' guitarist will often play his unnamed strat copy (that he found in a skip!) preference to his Fender Strat or Gibbo LP.
