Let's hope there's some bass players
I think I have the monopoly on bass playing here!
-
Cheers, I'll ask around about the auction guy. This village seems to be full of ex racing drivers!
Does he play bass?
I don't think so!

I suspect we may have tumbled ( ) onto an untapped market for bass combos that can do a quick wash rinse and spin during a gig. Go home with the warm afterglow of a gig well played, and a enough clean clothes to see you through the coming week.
"FinnDave" Is the car auction still in Witney?
Yep, bloke who runs it lives down the road from us. Drives a big old Roller, doesn't drink in the same pub as me!

I remember lusting after an HH rig, funny how back then were all keen to dump our valve gear (I was using a Selmer T&B 50 at the time) and go solid state. I think it was all that glowing greenness that did it.
-
Can't compete on cheapest bass, but our guitarist sometimes gigs with a strat copy he found in a skip! Can't get any cheaper than that unless someone pays you to take it away.

I played on a few Columbus JBs back in the 70s don't remember seeing a split pick up there before! I don't think I ever owned a Columbus, but had the use of one or two from time to time. As a result, I bought a Framus Jazz, classy natural finish. Another bass that has vanished into the mists of time. Served me well for a few years, though.
Are there many "bass layers" in Oxfordshire? It sounds like a fun pastime - I might need some instruction on exactly how to lay my bass first though
Oops. not there aren't, but there are some really bad typists! Instructions on how to lay a bass....take your bass, open the case and place (laying it down) carefully inside. The close the case and bring it to the blues jam on Sunday!
Sounds like fun. They really know how to let their hair down in Witney!
We sure do! Perhaps we can get our recently departed MP to come along and sing '(I tried to do it) My Way'. As a blues, obviously.

Do you think the thickness of a bass neck affects tone? How?
FinnDave replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
I firmly believe that the wood has no effect on 'tone'. Location and type of pick ups, strings and technique count for everything. All the wood does is look nice and keep the various bits and pieces firmly located. -
Quick heads up for the Oxfordshire gang, it's blues open jam at Fat Lils in Witney this coming Sunday after, and we (The Wirebirds) are host band. This means any bass layers (or players!) who fancy sitting in for a song or two will be using my amp. Not decided whether that'll be the Ashdown touring 330 combo or the ABM 500 head and Barefaced Super Twin. Bring your own bass or whatever you fancy playing. We had a bagpiper on stage with us recently, so anything goes! Be good to see a few of you there. Or even all of you!

I'm English and have never been to the States, but if I had paid good money for a PA and a band expected to use it free of charge, they'd be wrong. I'd expect some return for the wear and tear on my investment.
-
Our harmonica man has a coupe of PA systems and a large estate car. Our guitarist also has a PA. The band mutually own a couple of 300 watt powered monitors. Our drummer doesn't have a car, or even a driving licence, which makes life interesting at times, but he's a great guy and a superb drummer. Our former singer didn't even own a microphone!

I remember when Columbus Jazz basses were something to lust after, but they cost around £70 new so were way out of reach. Times and pockets have changed.
So Status, ACG, Iceni, Warwick, Yamaha no good?
Status is a local booking agent, AGC make cookers or some other white goods, Iceni sounds like the name of a celtic tribe, Warwick's in the midlands, and Yamaha make motorbikes. Can't see the connection with bass guitars. I'll continue to play basses made by the company known for producing car bumpers in America.
Really, more important things in life for who? Not me. My basses and playing is my life. Blue
Mine too, Blue. Playing is what it's about. But the basses are just tools. I sound the same pretty much the same whatever I play, I just happen to find Fenders suit me, I feel at home with them. But, quite honestly, if my US Precision was stolen or went up in smoke, I could buy another and after an hour of setting up, I doubt that I'd notice the difference. The things that define our bass playing are our brains, fingers, and ears. And sadly, those are deteriorating faster than than the expensive bits of wood we all covet.

Certainly agree about the cases, the US standard Jazz I bought earlier this year came with a case identical (apart from the covering, vinyl instead of tweed) to the one that came with my MiM Classic 60s Jazz three years ago. The previous US standard I bought came with a chunky flight case.
Vox, yeah they had the tear drop and octagon body style. I don't know how much of the market Vox had on guitars and basses. But the tube guitar amps they're selling now are supposed to be really nice. Blue
I've seen the teardrop basses, but mine was shaped like a Fender Mustang.
-
My first bass was a short scale Vox. I could never sell that, but I was lucky to find someone gullible enough to accept it for nothing.
-
I've got a US standard Precision and a US standard Jazz, both are distinctly better than MiM versions, though the gap has been narrowing in recent years. I'd be very sorry to see the US standard range disappear.

Need to move on this lovely Fender 60s style Precision Bass in 3 tone sunburst. This is from the acclaimed Crafted in Japan Fender line, and from the serial number, was made 2004/5. It has been used for only a few gigs, there are one or two small dings, but none are very visible. The bass is fitted with a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 vintage style pickup; the original pickup is included in the sale. I forgot to photograph the chrome pickup cover and bridge ashtray, but they are also included. No hard case included, but I have some decent Fender cases and may be persuaded out of one for a few more pounds Perfectly set-up, currently fitted with D'Adarrio round wounds. Lovely feel and sound. Available to view & play at my house in West Oxfordshire. Personal collection only, would meet you halfway if no more than 50 or so miles each way for me. I don't have a spare case for this, and have previously experienced problems even with a well cased case at the hands of couriers.

Any band that wanted to play these sort of head games with me would be told to go f*ck emselves bloody quick.
