1. I've used my BassStaion II at gigs through the same ABM 500/Barefaced Super Twin, and the cab certainly handles it well.
2. We mostly play small outdoor festivals and pubs. I use my Ashdown EB180 1x12 combo for really small gigs, my ABM 500/Barefaced Super Twin for outdoor gigs and my recently purchased Ashdown Touring 330 combo for most indoor gigs. I always use either a Fender Precision or Jazz, both with round wounds, and use no fx.
3. Played yesterday afternoon to the annual gather of 'Saints' (people from the South Atlantic island of St Helena), with two saints in the band, we always get a good reception there. Good sound, the two one hour sets flew by and I wanted to play more, but the others had had enough. My Ashdown touring 330 comb is turning out to be a real powerhouse, and a real bargain. Heavy bugger, though!
4. Our guitarist uses 20 watt valve combo. He is frequently painfully loud, and I sometimes struggle to hear my 300 was bass combo over him.
5. I'm very fond of a drink, but at gigs usually stick to water. Apart from the playing, it makes the drive home less stressful if you know you have nothing to fear from the breathalyser. I've never played with anyone who was better after a few drinks (or the dreaded pre-gig spliff).
6. Gigged my touring 330 combo last night, great tone and volume
7. Just back from our gig in Abingdon, poor load in facilities frustrated us as always there, plus playing in a fenced in corner of a corridor, but we played OK, even thought drummer and myself couldn't hear the vocals or guitar due to the shape of the stage! Used my 'new' Ashdown Touring 330 combo for the first time live, very impressive with my P bass going through it. Will use the same gear on Sunday when we play for the St Helena gathering in Reading (two of the band are St. Helenians)
8. I'm likely to worry my band at tonight's gig, as I collapse over my amp crying with laughter when I recall this thread as I try to find a decent sound! I'd re-lable the tone controls on my amp 'heft' 'punch' and 'oomph', if only I could work out which was which.
9. Hawkwind and Gong were my musical world when I was 16.
10. Have had both fail (though not at the same gig!) My Sans Amp will be plugged into the PA and sitting on my bass tonight at tonight's gig. My spare bass will be tuned, strap on it in a stand next to my amp, just in case. It's rare i have to use either, but better to be prepared than faff about mid gig.
11. Yep, I get mine from Boots, plastic bottle on the shelf.
12. Surgical spirit is similar, if not the same thing under a different name.
13.
If for any reason we're unable to repair your bass there at the gig then we'll tow it to the nearest garage. I might need to give the last point a bit more thought...
Repair and relicing, that's good service!
14. Good prices but I had several spare sets in hand when I checked upstairs.
15. Second hand Squier, I've got a vintage modified I paid under 200 for and it's a fine bass, usually my back-up at gigs, but can certainly hold its own against 'real' Fenders.
16.
Now, Off-Topic - that's where you're going to find your close-knit community of like-minded people.
Surely you mean a closed-minded community of (k)nit-like people?
17. These are great amps,I bought a touring 330 combo a couple of weeks ago, will be gigging it this weekend and leaving my ABM500/Barefaced rig at home!
18.
Well, I'm 50:50 on the band's output but I find tedious minutiae like this horribly fascinating. It is weird, though. At one moment he's recording with the rarest kit imaginable, the next he's using a Marshall Lead 12 solid state practice amp and making it sound like the seven trumpets of doom.
They probably only used the amps in the studio to keep him happy and DI'd his guitar straight into the desk (but kept schtum about it!).
19. We've got 5 gigs over the next couple of weeks, I think I'll have the DI box sitting on the amp, plugged to PA ready to switch over if it happens again, having it buried in my gig bag at the side of the stage wasn't a big help!
20. When I play a Precision, I sound like me playing bass. When I play a Jazz, I sound like me playing bass. When I play fingerstyle, I sound like me playing bass. When I play with a pick, I sound like me playing bass. I only change according my mood, how my hands feel, etc. No real difference in sound once the whole band's playing, subtle differences are lost.
21. I recently sold an MM fretless Jazz neck. It was a good neck, no problems, I just wasn't playing it much. Wood & construction quality seemed fine to me.
22. Just feel a bit bored until we play, no stage fright, possibly because I spent 15 years teaching, nothing bothers you after that!
23.
Great Dave, see you there ! LD
Cheers, be good to see you again.
24. Had my amp fail during the first song at a gig in Swindon a couple of months ago. Took 2 or 3 mins to dig out my DI box and hook it up to the (house) PA. It was less of a disruption to the gig than having the police in during the first set to remove a punter who knocked himself unconscious trying to get on stage with us! My spare bass remained unused at the the side of the stage.
25. Been playing over 40 years, mainly with fingers, pick for last few months. Never broken a bass guitar string. Not a gentle player, either. Use medium to heavy gauge strings.
