1.
FinnDave, checking your band facebook page I see your sunburst Jazz which looks neat, and a Precision. Hey, what about that ? The paint got lost on the P bass I use somewhere along the road ! LD
Cheers, your bare wood Precision looks good too. The sunburst Jazz is a 60s classic (nitro paint) and the white Precision has a sunburst twin as well. I also bought a black Jazz last week as I've bust a finger tendon (right hand) and can only play with a pick for now, the new bass was to cheer me up!
2. Hi from another local bassist. I'm out near Witney.
3.
For me, no, not really. I need that attention, applause and cheering after we play a song to feel fulfilled. Blue
Blue, mate, that's not about music, it's about performing. I am the same, I need that audience, that interaction, to feel good. It's that or the booze!
4.
And another mention for chancers! Forming Roman Empire revolutionary movement: Spartacus wanted!
Should get plenty of replies!
5.
No Jaki Liebezeit?!?!?! He'd have the best drumming surname on the list too!
Damn, now I'll have to spend the day listening to Can again!
6. I've only ever used two fingers (until recently, when an injury has forced me to use a pick instead).
7.
Composers, arrangers, producers, and probably several others, might well play a musical instrument and not want to perform in front of people. This will not be the case for all of those but there really is no reason why it shouldn't be so sometimes.
As I said, I have a restricted outlook, to me gigging is the raison detre of playing. I am currently playing in a blues band, whereas my my musical roots are in in psychedelic space rock of the 70s. But i still find it fulfilling.
8. How can you tell how good they are until you have to play with them? In which case I'd nominate our drummer Darren and Hammy Hamilton (formerly of Furniture).
9. Well, you could complain if you really made an effort.
10. I probably have a very restricted outlook on life, as I cannot begin to understand why anyone wants to play an instrument and not perform in front of people.
11. Finally sussed out how clear out my old attachments, so now I should be able to upload a pic of my black beauty
12. The severed (torn) tendon is one of the results of a daily nasty motorcycle accident 4 months ago, The doctors assure me it can be fixed, but takes a few weeks of immobility.
13.
musicians be they full time or part time are equal.
But some are more equal than others, of course
14. I'm seeing Hawkwind on April 20th...or at least I hope so, I had tickets for three of their gigs last year, and only made one - and even then I was feeling so rough I could barely stand to watch them.
15. Well, I tried but the damn system won't let me upload a pic. Looks like any other modern back Jazz bass with a maple neck
16. I am waiting until I got the black scratch plate before taking any pics Should be here in a day or two
17.
Well I hope it thoroughly cheers you up
Just put it down, definitely takes my mind of things Very playable without any adjustments, it was even in tune when I got it home!
18. I made the fateful mistake of visiting PMT in Oxford today, and in company of a guitarist friend who loves new kit. Also I was feeling a bit down after a scan had confirmed that I have a damaged/severed tendon in my right hand this morning. Both the above, plus the fact that I have been regretting selling my mex. standard Jazz last year, left me an easy victim. I have been thinking about a black Jazz bass with black scratch plate and maple neck, and the cunning swine had a lovely US standard in black and maple. I was putty in their hands and the little beauty is now mine. The black scratch plate is ordered and on its way!
19. I'm going through something similar, broke my right wrist badly in a motorcycle accident about 4 months ago and in the last couple of weeks, a weakened (by the accident) tendon has broken, so now I can't move the middle finger. I have played finger style only for over 30 years, but have already managed a gig and a public blues jam using a plectrum. It takes some getting used to, but it's better than quitting.
20.
No, I told them they should keep the other bloke, he's brilliant.
21.
I've been asked if I'd like to replace myself before now.
Yeah, but did you get the gig?
22. I love a drink as much as anyone, but never before a gig, it takes the edge off and my timing suffers. Quick toke between sets is even worse (not something I participate in these days), really ruins the timing.
23. Been in a similar situation, asked them to leave, and the band became fun again. Take a deep breath and just tell him to go.
24.
oh thanks for that i might have a butchers at it
I think you'll find it's already been butchered.
