1. I have Super Twin #001, and it is a great cab. I power it with an Ashdown ABM 500 Evo II and it is plenty loud enough for pub and moderate outdoor gigs. I can't honestly think of anything about to complain about, light, great tone, more than loud enough. You'll get to meet all the bass players in the audience, though, as they'll want to come and look at it!
2. I've got two Precisions but only one Jazz now, so I feel unbalanced
3. Interested as I sold a recent mex Jazz 6 months ago and I'm missing it. Can you PM me with your lowest price incl insured post/courier etc to the UK, please.
4. I sold my #2 Jazz last Autumn, 6 months later and I'm really regretting it
5.
I don't know where to stand with that one. Dave Brock clearly has better business sense, whereas Turner was more of an ideologue and closer to Hawkwind's squatter/free everything roots. I guess you need both, just not in the same band. Seems Turner could also be a bit of an inappropriate perv, and Brock a poor communicator, so who knows.
Dave B still says that the main problem with NT was his incessant playing over other people's solos, but I can't disagree with what you say here either.
6. Yeah, but Hawkwind kicked Nik Turner out, and still refuse to talk about him
7. The cover blew off our BBQ today, making realise I need a new gas cylinder. I am now suffering from gas gas (but not for the nasty little bike!).
8. I'll see your out of control saxophonist and raise you an out of control Harmonica player
9. Easy, do what we do, rehearse on Thursdays!
10. I bought a 25 watt Antex iron from Maplins about 25 years ago and it's still going strong.
11. I took my sister to see Genesis once, and I'd definitely consider them a bit dodgy. It was just after Peter Gabriel left and drummer Phil become singer Phil. I don't remember much else about it.
12.
Good call Dave. Now try and find greasy truckers ,with him doing the bass on master of the universe awesome
I was thinking of the other Greasy Truckers album (which didn't have any Hawkwind), just listened to Master of the the Universe on the 'right' Greasy Truckers, wonderfully chaotic! Lemmy goes into the chorus for bar or two before he realises the rest of the band haven't got there yet! Wonderful stuff, makes Space Ritual sound really professional
13. I'm 58 (I think) and knackered, but not the oldest or the most knackered in my band. Experience counts lot. If only I had some!
14.
Lemmy on "Space Ritual" was a massive influence on my bass playing.
I've just started to realise how much of an influence he was on mine.
15.
Good call Dave. Now try and find greasy truckers ,with him doing the bass on master of the universe awesome
I used to have that on vinyl but my first wife sold it
16. I have no interest in musical 'fashions', who's in or who's out, but I have recently been listening to this again, and it reminded what a bloody good bass player Lemmy was and how his playing really drove Hawkwind back in the day. If I could play with this sort of melodic intensity, I'd die happy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoA8zu1ZTSI
17.
Despite falling in lurve with the 180, its not going to cut it volume wise with our band
I used mine as an on stage monitor at a gig a couple of weeks ago, and DI'd the output through the PA. Worked well.
18. I have had an EB 180 1x12 for a few years now. I use it mostly for rehearsing, but also for some gigs. Great little combo that only cost me 90 quid.
19.
I'd advise not doing so, otherwise you'll go "HOLY CRAP THERE'S THIS WHOLE OTHER LEVEL HERE" and get lost down the rabbit hole like a lot of us.
I don't think there's much danger of that, I've long been aware that my ability is far lower than that of my basses.
20. I've been playing bass for about 45 years now, and to me a US standard fender is as good as it gets. I find a small but significant improvement from Squire to Mexican Fender to US Fender (not being snobbish, I have and gig all three) but have never played anything more expensive than a US Fender. Never felt the need to, either, there is simply nothing I would want to improve.
21.
Cheers folks! I have the opportunity to buy an ASHDOWN MAG 250 watt RMS. Maximum output 500 watt for £90. Good buy? Also, anything I should be looking out for with second hand bass amps? Thanks, C
Other than the obvious, like physical damage, I'd have a listen to it and make sure the speakers are OK and that all the knobs and buttons work, and if they do, buy it before someone else does. A MAG 250 for the price I paid for my EB180 has to be worth having. Ashdown gear is pretty robust in my experience, and they have a good reputation for looking after their customers. Getting it to Essex from Belfast might not be cheap if you do need work, though!
22. Yes, that was what I seemed to be doing last Saturday.
23. I use an Ashdown EB180 combo for rehearsals, and evener small gigs, no problem competing with a hard hitting drummer, guitarist and blues harp player with a very loud Fender Bassman. The combo cost me £90 three years ago.
24. I used to work in the same place as the keyboard player from Shakatak, Broadcasting House, early 80s. Was a decent chap, often popped in to talk bands with me.
25. It is possible that the holes in the pick-up covers are not truly vertical. I had a leaning pick-up in one of my Precisions, to the point that it was binding against the scratch plate, but that turned out to be out-of-true holes drilled into the body. I filled and re-redrilled the holes and all is now fine.
